Priyangu Pandey attack case: NIA names 4 more in third supplementary chargesheet

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted four more accused individuals in connection with the 2024 mob attack on Priyangu Pandey in Bhatpara, West Bengal, officials said on Tuesday.
In its third supplementary chargesheet filed before the NIA Special Court in Kolkata on Monday, the agency named Pious Prasad alias Sujal, Md. Tipu alias Tipua, Mohit Mahato alias Sahi, and Md. Javed alias Anda. They have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.
'With this, a total of 18 accused have been chargesheeted so far, of whom 17 have been arrested and one remains absconding,' the NIA said in a statement.
According to the NIA, the four newly named accused were actively involved in the criminal conspiracy and execution of the attack using explosives and firearms near Gate No. 3 of the Anglo-India Jute Mill staff quarters in the Bhatpara police station area.
The incident occurred on August 28, 2024, when Priyangu Pandey and his team were en route to the residence of former MP Arjun Singh.
The convoy was ambushed by a mob of about 50-60 people near the mill quarters. In the attack Pandey's driver, Ravi Verma, and his close aide, Rabi Singh, sustained gunshot injuries in the attack.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.

Man arrested for stabbing youth who tried to stop harassment in Delhi's Khajuri Khas

New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): A 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a local resident who intervened to stop him from harassing a girl in Delhi's Khajuri Khas area, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon. Police received a call about a stabbing in the area. According to officials, a local youth stepped in after he saw a girl being harassed by the accused. In retaliation, the accused allegedly stabbed the youth and fled the spot. The accused, identified as Chaman, son of Guddu and a resident of E-Block, Sri Ram Colony, was later traced and arrested. A case was registered under Sections 109(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the stabbing. Subsequently, based on the girl's complaint, a second case was registered under Section 74 of the BNS and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as one of the complainants was found to be a minor. Police said further investigation is underway in both cases. Earlier, on June 5, two juveniles were apprehended in connection with the stabbing death of a 16-year-old boy in Delhi's Anand Parbat area, police said. On June 2, police received information about a grievously injured and unconscious boy lying near Durga Mandir in Taliwalan Basti. A police team reached the spot immediately. As per the statement, an eyewitness informed the police that while he was returning home with the victim, two unidentified boys approached from behind and stabbed the 16-year-old before fleeing. The victim was rushed to RML Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said. Following the incident, an FIR (No. 275/25) was registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code at Police Station Anand Parbat, and the investigation began. According to DCP Nidhin Valsan's statement, the police team analysed CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and developed local intelligence. On June 5, based on credible secret information, two juveniles were apprehended. During questioning, the juveniles admitted to their involvement in the incident, as per the police. Based on their disclosure, a blood-stained knife, believed to be the weapon of offence, was recovered from a park near Jeewan Mala Hospital. (ANI)

Doctor booked for facilitating illegal stay of two Uzbek women, performing plastic surgery without formalities

A case has been registered against a Lucknow-based doctor for allegedly facilitating the illegal stay of two women from Uzbekistan and performing plastic surgery on them without completing the required formalities, police said. The women did not possess valid passports or visas, the police said, claiming they lost the documents two years ago. Besides Dr Vivek Gupta, the police have filed the FIR against Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana, a native of Kerala residing in Lucknow on rent, for also allegedly arranging accommodation for the two women. The matter came to light following a tip-off from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Lucknow, after which the police raided a flat and found the two Uzbekistan women staying illegally. Dr Gupta is accused of performing plastic surgery on the women to help alter their identity, allegedly without completing the necessary documentation and legal formalities. An FIR has been lodged against Dr Vivek Gupta and Thrijin Raj alias Arun Rana at the Sushant Golf City police station. The case has been filed under section 318 (4) (cheating) of the BNS. Police also invoked the Foreigners Act against accused, said a police officer. When contacted, Sushant Golf City Station House Officer Upendra Singh said that no arrests have been made in the case so far. According to police, they received a tip-off from the FRRO, Lucknow, on Friday, stating that foreign nationals were staying illegally in a flat without informing the FRRO, local police, or administrative authorities. A police team raided the flat and found two foreign women living there. The women identified themselves as Holida and Nilofar and claimed that their passport and visa documents were lost after they arrived in India. Police have not ruled out the possibility of the foreign nationals being involved in illegal or suspicious activities. When asked to provide a copy of the lost documents, the women claimed they had informed their associate, Lola Kayumova, to file a complaint but had no knowledge of whether she actually did so. They further alleged that Lola, who has been living in India for some time, had facilitated their and others' arrival in the country. They also stated that it was through Lola that they were introduced to Dr. Vivek Gupta, who runs hospitals at two locations and had performed plastic surgery-related procedures on them. The women claimed Lola later introduced them to Arjun Rana, who lives in a separate rented accommodation. They alleged that both Arjun Rana and Dr. Vivek Gupta were responsible for arranging their stay in Lucknow.

Woman pilot molested in cab in city, driver detained

Mumbai: The driver of an aggregator cab has been detained for re-rerouting his vehicle while driving a woman pilot home, stopping and allowing in two men who went on to sexually harass the 28-year-old passenger on Thursday night. A hunt is on for the two men, reports Mateen Hafeez. The woman hired the cab in Fort to go home in an eastern suburb around 11pm when midway the two unidentified men got in. While one of them touched her inappropriately, the other threatened her as she screamed in fear. They got out and left when the driver slowed down before a police nakabandi. "We have detained the driver and a probe is on," said a police officer about the FIR filed on Saturday. A woman pilot, who has complained of sexual harassment in an aggregator cab, told the police she came to CSMT station to meet her husband on Thursday evening. Her husband booked a cab at 10.45pm for her from the Fort area. After some time, she got into the vehicle and started towards her residence. "After travelling for about 25 minutes, the driver suddenly changed the route, stopped the vehicle and made two unknown men get in. One of them sat in the front seat, and the other sat next to me in the rear. Both were aged between 25 and 30 years," the complainant stated in the FIR. She added the man sitting next to her grabbed her right hand and twisted it backwards. As she screamed in fear, the other man sitting in front of her threatened her to be quiet. Then the man moved his hand over her thigh. At that time, the driver was driving and did not react. She stated there was a police nakabandi on the road and the driver slowed down. At that time, both the men got out of the car and fled. She added since she did not travel much in Mumbai, she had no idea where she was. Also, due to raindrops on the glass of the cab, she could not see much outside. After that, the cab driver took her to her address. She asked the driver who those men were and why he had let them into his car. The driver stayed silent, she said in the FIR. She added she was in a state of panic, paid the fare of Rs 530, and he left. On Friday night, she and her husband went to the police station. The FIR was lodged around 1am Saturday against the driver and the men. Police booked the three under sections 75(1) (sexual harassment), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 3 (5) (when a criminal act is done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention of all, each of such persons is liable for that act in the same manner as if done by him alone) of BNS.
