Player grades: Sixers fall to Heat, eliminated from playoff contention
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the Miami Heat on Saturday continuing to play out the string in the 2024-25 season. Once again missing so many players and facing a Heat team needing a win to solidify their play-in tournament positioning, it was another predictable result for the Sixers.
The Heat used their size and physicality in order to wear the Sixers down late to walk away with a 118-95 win. Tyler Herro led Miami with 30 points and seven assists. The loss is Philadelphia's seventh straight and it also officially eliminated the Sixers from playoff contention as they will miss the postseason for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
Quentin Grimes had 15 points and four rebounds for the Sixers while Jared Butler had 19 points and 10 assists. Ricky Council IV had 13 points, four assists, and six rebounds, Adem Bona had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Justin Edwards added 17.
Here are the player grades following the loss:
Jared Butler: A
It was a solid offensive night for Butler. He started with a couple of triples and was able to run the two-man game with Bona in the half-court. There is a lot to like about Butler's game as this team's point guard due to his cerebral game and his understanding of how to run things. He was able to find seams in the defense and had a good back-and-forth battle with Heat guard, and former college teammate at Baylor, Davion Mitchell. Overall, he was efficient on the offensive end and was able to get his teammates involved as well. He had a terrific night.
Quentin Grimes: C-plus
Grimes was fantastic to start the night as he knocked down his first three triples including drawing a foul on one of his makes. He was aggressive with his offense—which is something the Sixers desperately need—and was able to convert to get the scoreboard moving for Philadelphia. After his hot start, he wasn't able to do much as Miami began to tighten up its defense and force others to beat them. Grimes still has a long way to go before he can take on the responsibility he has had recently. He turned the ball over a bit too much in this one.
Justin Edwards: B-minus
The Heat seemed to pay a lot of attention to Edwards in this one. He faced a lot of defensive pressure when he had the ball, but to his credit, he found a way to be effective. He knocked down an early triple and was able to get into the teeth of Miami's defense. He also made plays with his passing as he got teammates involved. As always, these reps he's getting are going to be super important for him as time moves on.
Guerschon Yabusele: D
The Dancing Bear had a tough time with Heat rookie Kel'el Ware who stands at 7-feet tall. There were a handful of times when Ware would just reach over Yabusele for easy offensive rebounds and the Heat didn't have much trouble converting in the paint. He wasn't able to do much on the offensive end either as he struggled with his free throws and was unable to get going in terms of his field goal shooting either.
Adem Bona: A
The night for Bona started with him throwing down a lob in the pick-and-roll game with Butler. His constant movement and activity seemed to bother the Heat at times in this one and he deserves a lot of credit for being able to make things happen for Philadelphia. He was in the paint on both ends and deterred a lot of Miami's drivers. As with Edwards, these reps he continues to get will help him take steps forward as player.
Ricky Council IV: B
The night for Council started off nicely. While he continues to struggle with his 3-point shot, he was able to get into the paint and draw attention from the Heat defense and make things happen. He was aggressive off the dribble and getting downhill which is what the Sixers have been begging for more of from him. However, he wasn't able to repeat his success after halftime as the Heat locked in on him.
Lonnie Walker IV: B
Getting back on the court after a concussion, Walker knocked down a triple immediately in his initial stint. He moved well on the perimeter on the defensive end and was able to make things happen by moving his feet well. His aggressiveness on the offensive end was a big help to the second unit in this one.
Jalen Hood-Schifino: C
The initial stint for Hood-Schifino wasn't great. Returning from an illness, he had a bad turnover on an inbounds pass and wasn't able to get anything going on the offensive end. He did knock down a pull-up jumper after halftime and made some plays with his passing.
Marcus Bagley: C-plus
In his initial stint, Bagley finished a slam and was helpful on the glass which is what the Sixers are looking for from their perimeter players. They need help rebounding and that's where the guards and wings have to step in and help in that regard.
Phillip Wheeler: Incomplete
Wheeler didn't get a look until late in this one and wasn't able to do much in his minutes. He did grab a rebound, however.

Former Sixers guard Isaiah Joe wins a title as Thunder defeat Pacers
YOUR 2025 @NBA CHAMPIONS 🏆#ThunderUp There is a new champion in the NBA and it is the Oklahoma City Thunder after earning a ???-??? win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 on Sunday night and winning the first championship in Oklahoma City history. With the Pacers losing All-Star Tyrese Haliburton to a lower leg injury in the first quarter, Indiana didn't have enough in the second half to beat the loaded Thunder. OKC was led by MVP winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who had 29 points, 12 assists, and five rebounds, and fellow All-Star Jalen Williams added 20 points and four rebounds. Young big man Chet Holmgren blocked five shots in a dominant defensive effort. Isaiah Joe, a former member of the Philadelphia 76ers, will win his first title. A second-round pick of the Sixers in 2020, Joe didn't get time in Game 7, but he shot 41.1% from deep in 21 playoff games for Oklahoma City as he helped the Thunder get to this point. In terms of other former Sixers, TJ McConnell did his best to help the Pacers get to the top after the injury to Haliburton, but it wasn't enough. He still was impressive as he had 16 points off the bench and led Indiana's gutsy effort, but the Thunder were able to finish it off. The Sixers will now look to reload and get back after it in the 2025-26 season. With a healthy Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, they figure to be in the conversation to come out of the Eastern Conference.

Lionel Messi Makes FIFA Club World Cup History With Inter Miami Goal vs FC Porto
Lionel Messi Makes FIFA Club World Cup History With Inter Miami Goal vs FC Porto originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Inter Miami were not considered favorites in getting out of Group A of the FIFA Club World Cup, but they still couldn't be counted out due to the team having Lionel Messi. Advertisement The Argentine star is the best player of the team and was close to giving Inter Miami a win in its first game of the Club World Cup last Friday. The MLS side drew 0-0 against Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium. Today, they took on FC Porto, who were the favorites to advance as leaders of Group A ahead of Inter Miami, Al Ahly, and Palmeiras. The Portuguese side drew 0-0 against Palmeiras this past weekend. Porto were the heavy favorites against Inter Miami and demonstrated that when they took the lead early. A foul in the box in the first three minutes of the match led to Porto being awarded a penalty. Samu Aghehowa converted the penalty to give FC Porto the lead, and they kept the scoreline at halftime. What came next led to history. Lionel Messi's Historic Free-Kick Before Messi's goal, Inter Miami found the equalizer in the 47th minute after a great finish in the box by Telasco Segovia. Inter Miami picked up momentum and led to a free kick near the box. Advertisement In the 54th minute, Messi scored past Cláudio Ramos to give Inter Miami the lead. The goal is Messi's 68th free-kick goal of his career. The goal made history for Messi in the FIFA Club World Cup and gave Inter Miami the 2-1 win. Messi officially became the Argentine with the most goals in the history of the FIFA Club World Cup. He now has six goals in the competition's history, overtaking Cesar Delgado's five goals, who played with C.F. Monterrey in previous editions of the Club World Cup. This goal is also Messi's 50th goal for Inter Miami. He needed just 61 appearances to reach this new goal milestone for Inter Miami. Near Cristiano Ronaldo's CWC Record When records are discussed, it is hard to avoid comparing with Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains the all-time top goalscorer of the FIFA Club World Cup. Ronaldo has scored seven goals, the most of any player in this competition. Advertisement That record is expected to be surpassed in the next few years if the Club World Cup continues with this new format of 32 teams. Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala scored a hat-trick last weekend in their 10-0 win against Auckland City. It goes to show players could start getting close to that record of seven goals. Messi's achievement as the Argentine with the most goals in the FIFA Club World Cup may be more difficult to surpass anytime soon Inter Miami Close to the Knockout Stage Inter Miami's 2-1 win over Porto puts them closer to the knockout stage. Inter Miami is second in Group A with four points after two games. Advertisement They only need a point against Palmeiras to advance to the Round of 16. The MLS team plays the Brazilian team on Monday at the Hard Rock Stadium. Palmeiras also need a point to advance, meaning if the game ends in a draw, both teams advance. Inter Miami is second due to goal difference. The MLS team has a +1 goal difference, scoring two goals and conceding one so far in the tournament. Palmeiras has a +2 goal difference, having scored two goals and conceded no goals. More goal past Manuel Neuer #1 of FC Bayern Munchen during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group C match between FC Bayern München and CA Boca Juniors at Hard Rock Stadium on June 20, 2025 in Miami Gardens, Florida. Boca Juniors fans will be praying for a Bayern Munich victory over Benfica in the final round of Group C fixtures. If Benfica wins or draws against Bayern, the Buenos Aires side will be eliminated regardless of the result in its match against Auckland City. Boca Lights Up Miami Boca Juniors fans have invaded Miami, Florida over the last week, creating a sea of yellow and blue for the fixture against Bayern Munich at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The noise brought by travelling fans would make you think the game was being held in Buenos Aires. South Beach has been taken over by Boca banners and tens of thousands of supporters too, as the side from Argentina joins the other South American nations in spreading fanfare through what has otherwise been a rather subdued Club World Cup. (Photo by) The atmosphere in Boca's fixtures has been electric and that has completely galvanised the team on the field too. On paper Bayern Munich and Benfica were set to sweep past Boca, but that has proved far from the case. Big Boca Performances Boca Juniors stunned the world by going 2-0 up against Benfica in their opening fixture. Only to be pegged back by two goals from Benfica's Argentina internationals; Ángel Di María and Nicolás Otamendi. In hindsight that might seem like two points dropped, but Boca would certainly have taken it before the game. Then, Boca were minutes away from another tie with European opposition as German giants Bayern Munich needed a very late 2-1 winner to clinch 3 points. It was a moment of delirium for Boca fans that will enter the history books regardless how this tournament finishes for them. Bayern Must Defeat Benfica Now there is just one game remaining for each side in Group C. On Tuesday Bayern Munich takes on Benfica and Boca Juniors faces whipping boys Auckland City. The team from New Zealand has a goal difference of -16 over two games. Boca must win and Benfica must lose for the team from Argentina to have any chance of progressing to the next round. However if this occurs Boca also needs a seven goal swing in its favor. Boca currently holds a -1 goal difference and Benfica is on +6. Luckily for Boca, Auckland has conceded an average of eight goals per game in this tournament. On the other hand, Benfica needs only a draw against a Bayern team that has now qualified for the next round and may opt to rest some players. It is almost certain that Boca will put a handful of goals past Auckland, but it is definitely not certain whether or not Bayern Munich will do the team from Argentina a favor.
