Wildfire breaks out on Boyes Drive
Yet another wildfire is raging in the Boyes Drive area in Lakeside, with road closures imminent.
Ward 71 Councillor Carolynne Franklin took to social media on Sunday morning to confirm the fire was in the region between Lakeside and Muizenberg and that motorists should avoid the area.
In addition, Main Road is expected to be seriously impacted.
She thanked those who reported the fire as well as the City Services for their response.
Cape Town has experienced unseasonal warm winter weather over the past 24 hours with Berg winds blowing.
Capetonians will need no reminding of the devastating wildfires which destroyed nearly 4 000 hectares in April this year in the Tokai and Silvermine areas of Table Mountain National Park.

Western Cape prepares for winter as storms approach
The Western Cape government has activated its disaster readiness plans as winter cold and wet conditions are forecast to persist into next week. Anton Bredell, the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, said provincial services are on high alert. 'Our disaster and emergency services are ready to respond swiftly,' Bredell confirmed. 'The Provincial Disaster Management Centre coordinates and supports the district disaster centres, and each local municipality in the province knows what is expected during the coming winter months to keep people safe.' The province's preparation comes amid weather warnings of increased flood risks in vulnerable areas. Following a tragic drowning at a low-level bridge in Slanghoek, officials have reiterated safety precautions. Bredell urged residents to stay informed and prepare for winter emergencies. 'We appeal to the public not to litter or dump in stormwater drains, as this will stop the water from draining away and cause even more flooding,' he said. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre also advised households to prepare emergency kits. A 'grab-and-go' kit should include identification documents, essential medicines, phone chargers, cash, and a first aid kit. 'Assess where you live, as your home may flood if you are near a river or if there is poor drainage,' the centre said. Authorities have emphasised the importance of heeding weather warnings from credible sources such as the South African Weather Service or local municipalities. Residents should evacuate early in flood-prone or low-lying areas and avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. 'Just 15 cm of fast-moving water can knock you down, and a depth of two feet can float a car,' the department warned. Contact with floodwater should also be avoided due to contamination of sewage, fuel, or chemicals. Bredell stressed the role of public cooperation: 'These men and women are trained to keep us safe, and they risk their own lives to do this. Heavy rain fills Western Cape dams, allays fears of 'Day Zero'
The latest official dam level stats for the Western Cape show that cumulatively the six major dams in the province are well above 60% of capacity – and are continuing to rise. The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – all saw increases as rain lashed the province in recent days and weeks. The good news is that even more rain is forecast for the coming days as we rapidly approach the winter solstice. The City of Cape Town (CoCT) uploaded its latest stats on Wednesday, 18 June. The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 64.7% of total storage. That's up from the 63.8% the previous week. However, the current levels are down on the same period a year ago when the combined percentage stood at 66.4%. Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than 50% of the Western Cape's total dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI) is at 63.5% of capacity, while the next biggest dam, Voëlvlei (164 095 MI), is at 60.5%.
