Devers homers against his former team to key 3-2 win for the Giants against the Red Sox
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers hit his first home run for San Francisco against his former team on Saturday, and the Giants beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 just six days after the big trade between the teams. Devers was acquired from Boston on Sunday. He delivered his first long ball for the Giants in the third inning on Saturday after he went hitless in his first six at-bats in the series. Devers sent an opposite-field drive off Brayan Bello (3-2) over the left-field fence for a two-run shot that happened to be caught by a fan in a Red Sox T-shirt. Devers got loud cheers from the big crowd in San Francisco as he rounded the bases for his 216th career home run that gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead. Devers was traded by Boston less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension that he signed in 2023. Heliot Ramos also homered for the Giants, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Landen Roupp (5-5) bounced back from a rough start last Saturday against the Dodgers, throwing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Camilo Doval allowed two runs in the ninth before getting his 12th save in 15 chances. Boston had won seven of the last eight games. Key moment Boston scored twice in the ninth against Doval and had the tying run on second base with one out. But Doval got Marcelo Mayer and pinch-hitter Romy Gonzalez on groundouts to end the game. Key stat Devers became the 10th player to homer for and against the same team in a seven-day span, according to Sportradar. The last player to do it was Abraham Toro, who homered for Houston against Seattle on July 26, 2021, and then for the Mariners against the Astros the next day. Up next RHP Luis Giolito (3-1, 3.74 ERA) will start for Boston against LHP Robbie Ray (8-2, 2.68 ERA). ___ AP MLB:

Happ homers twice as the Cubs hold off Raleigh and the Mariners for a 10-7 win
Ian Happ homered twice and drove in four runs, and the Chicago Cubs held off Cal Raleigh and the Seattle Mariners for a 10-7 victory on Saturday. Raleigh opened the ninth inning with his major league-leading 30th homer after he also went deep twice on Friday. Luke Raley hit a two-out single for Seattle, but Daniel Palencia closed it out when he retired Donovan Solano on a foul popup. Michael Busch, Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong also homered for Chicago on a 94-degree day at Wrigley Field with a 20-mph wind blowing toward center field. Brad Keller (3-0) got five outs for the win for the NL Central leaders. Solano and Raley each had three hits and two RBIs for Seattle, which won 9-4 in the series opener on Friday. Happ drove Emerson Hancock's first pitch of the game over the wall in left-center for his 10th homer. Tucker went deep on Hancock's third pitch for his first homer since June 9 and No. 14 on the year. Happ became the first player to hit a leadoff homer for the Cubs in consecutive games since Anthony Rizzo in June 2017. Happ added a three-run shot in the second, lifting Chicago to a 6-1 lead. He has four homers in his last three games. Busch hit a three-run homer in the third, and Crow-Armstrong connected for a solo shot in the fifth against Zach Pop. It was Crow-Armstrong's team-high 21st homer. Hancock (3-3) was tagged for nine runs in four innings. The Mariners cut it to 9-6 in the fifth, scoring three unearned runs following Vidal Bruján's throwing error on Randy Arozarena's grounder. Home plate umpire Chad Whitson left after five innings. The game continued with Dexter Kelley behind the plate. Seattle reliever Trent Thornton wobbled on the mound with one out in the eighth. He was helped off by training staff. Keller entered two runners on and none out in the sixth, then struck out the side. Happ has two multihomer games this season and 17 for his career. Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (1-2, 2.55 ERA) faces Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (4-2, 3.84 ERA) on Sunday.

Elly De La Cruz vomits on field, stays in game and hits 435-foot homer
Playing during an excessive heat warning in St. Louis, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz vomited on the field during the fourth inning of Saturday's game against the Cardinals. De La Cruz stayed in the game, and three innings later, hit a go-ahead home run. With the Reds' Nick Martinez on the mound with two outs and a 3-1 count to the Cardinals' Nolan Arenado, Martinez stepped off the mound as De La Cruz walked into the outfield and threw up. The game was stopped as athletic trainers attended to De La Cruz, who appeared to tell manager Terry Francona that he would stay in the game. A member of the St. Louis grounds crew was seen with a shovel to clean up the outfield grass where De La Cruz got sick. It was 92 degrees at first pitch and 96 degrees at the end of the game. With the humidity, it felt like the temperature was 106. In the top of the third inning, De La Cruz hit a two-out triple to center field. The relay throw short-hopped Arenado and got by him. De La Cruz tried to score, but Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray was backing up the throw and threw De La Cruz out at the plate to end the inning. De La Cruz was slow to get up after his head-first slide into home before getting up and going into the field. Advertisement During the top of the fourth, De La Cruz could be seen sitting by himself and drinking fluids. 'He drank a bunch of water — I mean a bunch,' Francona told reporters after a 6-5 loss in 11 innings. 'He went right out and got rid of it. Probably could've made some money, that's game-used. It's probably worth something.' De La Cruz grounded out to end the fifth inning, but came up again in a tie game in the seventh inning. The Cardinals chose to leave in left-hander Steven Matz to face the switch-hitting De La Cruz after the Reds tied the score on a walk and two hits. De La Cruz entered the game with a .933 OPS batting left-handed and .580 right-handed. De La Cruz jumped on Matz's first pitch, an 85-mph changeup, and hit it 435 feet to center field for his 17th home run of the season — fourth while batting right-handed — to give the Reds a 4-2 lead. 'The kid likes to play,' Francona said. Arenado led off the ninth with a game-tying home run off of Reds closer Emilio Pagán, who entered in the eighth after Tony Santillan allowed a pair of runs to cut the Reds' lead to one.
