Blue Jays Predicted To Land $18 Million Pitcher In Midseason Trade

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Toronto Blue Jays have slowly but surely chased the New York Yankees down in the American League East. Through 74 games, the Blue Jays are just three games back of the division lead. They're in the perfect position to buy at the trade deadline, and acquiring a starting pitcher would be a tremendous move for them to make in the coming weeks. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently predicted the Blue Jays would acquire Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for LHP Kendry Rojas and 2B Sam Shaw. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 15: Starter Merrill Kelly #29 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches during the third inning against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field on June 15, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 15: Starter Merrill Kelly #29 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches during the third inning against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field on June 15, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 8-2. More"The Blue Jays are focused on acquiring a starting pitcher before the trade deadline and the veteran righty would be a good fit for them," Bowden wrote. "Kelly, 36, is 6-3 with a 3.41 ERA over 15 starts and will be eligible for free agency at season's end. "He went to high school and college in Arizona and would like to finish his career as a Diamondback. However, if the D-Backs fall out of the National League wild-card race, perhaps they'd trade him as a rental for two solid prospects and then look to re-sign him in the offseason." With Corbin Burnes on the shelf for the season, the Diamondbacks appear to be sellers. Kelly has been one of their more consistent pitchers this season, though he does come with some risk. With Kelly aging and entering free agency at the end of the season, this would seemingly be a rental deal for the Blue Jays. Still, the proposed trade makes Toronto better right now and it would help the team chase the Yankees in the division. More MLB: Surging NL Club Tabbed Favorites In Rafael Devers Trade Sweepstakes

Yankees Predicted to Trade For $66 Million All-Star Slugger, Fix Infield

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees' primary, healthy infield this season has featured Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, Anthony Volpe at shortstop, DJ LeMahieu at second base and Paul Goldschmidt at first base. The rotation between Goldschmidt, Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton at designated hitter and first base aside, the Yankees' infield has a few problems. For starters, Chisholm is a better defender at second base than in the hot corner. Also, LeMahieu's bat has not been up to par while he has handled a majority of the work at second base since he returned from injury. The Yankees should have options available on the trade block, but Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez predicted during a Bleacher Report livestream that the Yankees will trade for Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. BOSTON, MA - AUGUST 25: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks points skyward as he rounds the bases after his three-run home run against the Boston Red Sox during the sixth inning at Fenway... BOSTON, MA - AUGUST 25: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks points skyward as he rounds the bases after his three-run home run against the Boston Red Sox during the sixth inning at Fenway Park on August 25, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. MoreSuárez is playing on a $15 million club option this season, but will be a free agent once it ends. He signed a seven-year, $66 million deal before the 2018 season with the Cincinnati Reds. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2022 before ending up on the Diamondbacks in 2023. Suárez was an All-Star back in 2018, but has proven to be a power threat over the course of his career. This season, he has a .237 average but is making up for it with 22 home runs and a .846 OPS. He has 298 career home runs. Adding Suárez would allow Chisholm to move back to second base and slide LeMahieu to the bench. LeMahieu has slashed .244/.330/.337 through 30 games. The Arizona Diamondbacks are in fourth place in the National League West, entering play on Friday. They could end up being sellers, and a player like Suárez would be a prime candidate to be dealt. Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo Announces Corbin Carroll News Before Rockies Game

Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo Announces Corbin Carroll News Before Rockies Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Arizona Diamondbacks, currently posting a 37–37 record and positioned fourth in the NL West—trailing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers by eight games—are navigating a challenging stretch as they push for a playoff spot. Advertisement The season's expectations took a major hit when offseason acquisition and Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes was lost to Tommy John surgery, a setback that comes as a huge blow to the team's playoff aspirations. Despite the mediocre record, the Diamondbacks have shown strength on the offensive side; they rank third in runs per game at 5.1 and fourth in home runs with 104, while posting a team-wide .442 slugging percentage and .772 OPS, both of which rank them third in the league. Advertisement On MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo offered an encouraging update. 'He's getting very close," Lovullo said. "I think we really dodged the bullet. It's in a very, very sensitive space, but the ball got a lot of meat instead of a lot of bone. So hopefully sooner rather than later.' Carroll, the 2023 Rookie of the Year and an All-Star who played a key role in leading the Diamondbacks to the World Series in 2023, continues to stand out for his contributions this season. He has already accumulated an impressive 2.7 WAR over 72 games, tallying 20 home runs and 10 stolen bases while posting a .255 batting average and a .914 OPS. Advertisement His availability remains a critical component for Arizona's success as the team navigates recent setbacks in its quest for a postseason berth.
