Athletic Bilbao condemns fans after Nico Williams mural defaced amid Barca interest

Athletic Bilbao rebuked fans who erased winger Nico Williams from a players' mural, declaring that those who 'disrespect one of our own' have no place in the club's family amid transfer speculation linking him to Barcelona.
The 22-year-old Spain international, whose image was removed with the message 'Leave or stay, you've lost respect', was defended by the Basque club he joined as an academy player in 2013.
Williams, who has a contract until 2027, is one of Athletic's prized assets after he broke into the senior team and is among the first names on the team sheet.
'The dignity of a club is the dignity of the people who make it up and is measured by their capacity to behave in a coherent way with their own values, without falling into provocations or lowering themselves, and always holding their heads high,' the club said.

'The dignity of a club is also reflected in the way it protects its own people. That is why those who have erased Nico's image from artist Carlos Lopez's mural in Barakaldo do not represent Athletic.
'And if they think they are part of this family, they should know that they are wrong: to disrespect one of our own is to disrespect Athletic itself.'
The mural, created by artist Carlos Lopez, originally featured Williams alongside his brother Inaki, who also plays for Athletic. The club has contacted Lopez to help restore the younger Williams to his rightful place in the artwork.
'Behind an anonymous lack of respect, there is always someone too small to show their face,' Inaki said on X.

The mural was defaced after Barca sporting director Deco said they could target the winger, who scored in last year's European Championship final against England to guide Spain to a record fourth title.
'Nico, like other players, has shown interest in joining us. If the conditions are right, we'll go for him,' Deco told Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
'You first talk to the agent, then look into contract details, and finally determine if the player's club is open to negotiating or will demand the full release clause. In Nico's case, it's very clear - he has a release clause.'

Real Madrid team news: Jude Bellingham gives update on surgery during Club World Cup

Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed on Sunday that he will undergo surgery to address a long-standing shoulder issue after the conclusion of the Club World Cup in the United States. The 21-year-old, who has been managing the injury since 2023, has played through discomfort for both club and country. Real Madrid have scheduled the operation to follow the tournament, which concludes later this month. Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund earlier this year, has frequently been seen wearing strapping on his shoulder during matches. The injury first flared up in a match against Rayo Vallecano, forcing him to miss two games for both Real Madrid and England late in 2023. Speaking after Real Madrid's 3-1 victory over Mexico's Pachuca in the Club World Cup, Bellingham explained his decision to proceed with surgery. 'I've reached the point where the pain isn't so bad, but I was sick of playing with the sling,' he told reporters. I've been waiting for a long time, and my patience is running out, but the physios and doctors have been incredible. I just want to feel free,' he added. Despite his discomfort, Bellingham has been a key figure for Real Madrid since joining the club in the summer of 2023 from Borussia Dortmund, helping the Spanish giant win the La Liga and Champions League double in his first campaign. The timeline for Bellingham's return remains unclear.

Manchester City Crush Al Ain 6-0 to Secure Club World Cup Last 16 Spot

Manchester City secured their spot in the Club World Cup last 16 with a dominating 6-0 victory over Al Ain in Atlanta on Sunday. In a match known as the 'Abu derby", City, owned by UAE vice-president Sheikh Mansour, faced off against Al Ain, led by Sheikh Mohamed, president of both the club and the country. The Premier League team showed no familial mercy. Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for City, followed by young talent Claudio Echeverri's first goal for the club with a free-kick. Erling Haaland added the third with a penalty. In the second half, Gundogan scored again, Oscar Bobb netted the fifth, and Rayan Cherki marked his first City goal, bringing them level with Juventus at the top of Group G with six points. This result also confirmed Juventus' advancement to the next round. 'Now we have to see whether we'll be first or second in the group," said City's coach Pep Guardiola. 'We played a little bit better than the first game, especially in the second half." Guardiola had mentioned before the game that the squad needed trimming, which was evident as he rotated his entire starting line-up from the win over Wydad Casablanca. This included superstar Haaland, newcomer Rayan Ait-Nouri, and promising talent Echeverri. Al Ain, coached by Serbian Vladimir Ivic, were already defeated 5-0 by Juventus in their opener and faced another tough challenge against the 10-time Premier League champions. City will face Juventus in Orlando on Thursday to determine who tops the group and potentially avoids a last-16 match against Spanish giants Real Madrid. City needed one more goal to move ahead of Juve on goal difference but ran out of time. 'Unfortunately, we started the second half a bit slow, so there was not much time at the end to score the last goal to be ahead of Juve going into the final group-stage game," Gundogan told DAZN. 'That's maybe the slightly disappointing part of the night, but the result speaks for itself and it was fully deserved." (with AFP inputs)

International Olympic Day: Juan Antonio Samaranch Senior - The controversial figure who saved the Olympics

Juan Antonio Samaranch Sr. helmed the IOC for 21 years (1980 until 2001) and saved it from financial ruin. (Image: X/IOCMedia) International Olympic Committee's (IOC) incoming president Kirsty Coventry and outgoing president Thomas Bach will honour each other at Monday's handover ceremony in Paris, with both acknowledging Juan Antonio Samaranch Senior's crucial role in saving the Olympic movement from potential extinction, transforming it into a financially robust organisation during his presidency from 1980 to 2001. Coventry and Samaranch Senior share a background of serving in controversial regimes before their IOC roles. Coventry served as sports and arts minister in Zimbabwe's government, whose 2023 election was deemed unfair by international observers, while Samaranch held a high position in General Francisco Franco's fascist Spanish regime. Samaranch Senior's presidency faced scrutiny during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics votes-for-favours scandal, yet his contributions to the Olympic movement remain significant. "His legacy is that we have an Olympic Games to talk about," former IOC marketing executive Terrence Burns told AFP. "He saved it from financial and political ruin." After Franco's death and Spain's return to monarchy, Samaranch Senior became ambassador to the Soviet Union, acknowledging his political career in Spain had ended. He consistently maintained he was not a fascist. His election as IOC president occurred during the 1980 Moscow Games, which were affected by boycotts following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Former IOC marketing chief Michael Payne emphasised Samaranch's impact: "Within the IOC I think the Samaranch legacy is fully understood: that he saved the Olympic Movement." Payne highlighted Samaranch's success in developing the business model, including television strategy and the TOP programme, which became the most successful sports marketing program ever. According to Payne, Samaranch Senior was more introverted than his son, who recently finished second to Coventry in the IOC presidential election. "He was very introverted, a great listener, didn't do a lot of talking, and a great strategic thinker," said Payne. "But because he wasn't at the forefront, communicating and explaining, he was often misunderstood. He only learned English as his third or fourth language when he was 60." Samaranch's leadership during the Salt Lake City scandal demonstrated his resilience, resulting in six members' expulsion and implementation of reform measures. "He was calm under unbelievable pressure and stress," Payne recalled. "Honestly, you went to the office every day and you didn't know if the organisation would survive... And that was for three months. It was brutal. And yet, Samaranch Senior displayed absolute calm, focus." In a rare moment of vulnerability, Samaranch told the Los Angeles Times in 2000: "Retiring myself after the Barcelona Games (in 1992), I could have been a hero, no? I cannot regret. I have to write my history again." Samaranch demonstrated his tough negotiating skills when Greece opposed the Olympic torch lighting for the 1984 Los Angeles Games due to commercialisation concerns. "Samaranch sent one of his relatives to Olympia to privately film the lighting of the flame, put it in a miner's lamp, and brought it back to Lausanne," Payne revealed. "Then Samaranch called the Greeks and said, 'just for you to understand, I now have the Olympic flame on my desk. Either you will agree to let the Americans come and properly light it or there will never be another torch lighting in Olympia. Because it will be lit at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. ' So he wasn't shy of being very tough." Follow all the live updates, scores, and highlights from the India vs England Test match here .
