Manchester City Crush Al Ain 6-0 to Secure Club World Cup Last 16 Spot

News185 hours ago

Manchester City secured their spot in the Club World Cup last 16 with a dominating 6-0 victory over Al Ain in Atlanta on Sunday.
In a match known as the 'Abu derby", City, owned by UAE vice-president Sheikh Mansour, faced off against Al Ain, led by Sheikh Mohamed, president of both the club and the country. The Premier League team showed no familial mercy.
Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for City, followed by young talent Claudio Echeverri's first goal for the club with a free-kick. Erling Haaland added the third with a penalty.
In the second half, Gundogan scored again, Oscar Bobb netted the fifth, and Rayan Cherki marked his first City goal, bringing them level with Juventus at the top of Group G with six points. This result also confirmed Juventus' advancement to the next round.
'Now we have to see whether we'll be first or second in the group," said City's coach Pep Guardiola. 'We played a little bit better than the first game, especially in the second half."
Guardiola had mentioned before the game that the squad needed trimming, which was evident as he rotated his entire starting line-up from the win over Wydad Casablanca.
This included superstar Haaland, newcomer Rayan Ait-Nouri, and promising talent Echeverri.
Al Ain, coached by Serbian Vladimir Ivic, were already defeated 5-0 by Juventus in their opener and faced another tough challenge against the 10-time Premier League champions.
City will face Juventus in Orlando on Thursday to determine who tops the group and potentially avoids a last-16 match against Spanish giants Real Madrid. City needed one more goal to move ahead of Juve on goal difference but ran out of time.
'Unfortunately, we started the second half a bit slow, so there was not much time at the end to score the last goal to be ahead of Juve going into the final group-stage game," Gundogan told DAZN.
'That's maybe the slightly disappointing part of the night, but the result speaks for itself and it was fully deserved."

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger alleges he was racially abused during Club World Cup game

German defender Antonio Rudiger alleged that he was the victim of racist abuse during Real Madrid's 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca in their Club World Cup game in Charlotte, North Carolina, late on Sunday. Towards the end of the game, as the five minutes of added stoppage time approached, an altercation erupted between sets of players from both teams. After that was dismissed, referee Ramon Abatti could be seen in discussion with the defender, and then crossed his forearms in front of his chest, which signals the activation of the anti-racism protocol. Later, Real Madrid's newly appointed head coach, Xabi Alonso, confirmed that Rudiger told the team he had been racially abused. 'That's what Rudiger said, and we believe him,' Alonso replied to a question on whether the German defender had been abused, according to Reuters. 'It is important to have zero tolerance in these kinds of situations. FIFA now is investigating. That's all I can say.' According to a later news report in The Athletic, Rudiger's allegation was not towards any member of the crowd but rather against Pachuca's club captain, Gustavo Cabral. The publication quoted Cabral as responding: 'It was a fight, we collided, he said that I hit him with my hand and then there was an argument and the referee made the sign of racism. In Argentina we say 'cagon de mierda' (a profanity used to call someone a coward), all the time I told him the same thing.' Pachuca head coach, Jaime Lozano, was quoted as saying in the post-match press conference by The Athletic that he had not yet spoken to Cabral about the incident, but 'nothing justifies' racist abuse. 'I only found out now that you are telling me, we haven't talked about it in the dressing room. I haven't spoken to Cabral about it, I couldn't give you any explanation or justification in that sense,' he said. 'Nothing justifies that, but I will talk to him but knowing him from before this has never happened with him, nor with any of these Pachuca players in our league. I tell you I can put my hands in the fire for my captain.'

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: How can Real Madrid qualify for knockouts after Salzburg drew with Al Hillal?

Al Hilal dominated possession but was held to a 0-0 draw by a resilient Salzburg defence in their Club World Cup Group H clash on Sunday. Despite having 62% possession and 10 shots, the Saudi side lacked a cutting edge in the absence of injured striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. Earlier, Real Madrid beat Pachuca 3-1, knocking out the Mexican side. With the draw, the group's knockout round spots remain undecided, setting up two crucial matches ahead. What are the rules of knockout qualification in FIFA Club World Cup? The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockouts of FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Salzburg will face Real Madrid in Philadelphia on Thursday, with Kylian Mbappe expected to return after missing the Spanish club's first two matches, according to coach Xabi Alonso. On the same day, Al Hilal will take on Pachuca in Nashville. How can Real Madrid qualify for the knockouts? Real Madrid tops the group, level on points with Salzburg but ahead due to a superior club ranking. Pachuca, last year's Intercontinental Cup runner-up, remains pointless. Madrid must avoid defeat against Salzburg to secure qualification. A loss would leave its fate hinging on the Al Hilal vs Pachuca result — anything but a win for the Saudi side would still send Xabi Alonso's team through. Group H points table Team Matches Wins Losses Draws Points Real Madrid 2 1 0 1 4 RB Salzburg 2 1 0 1 4 Al Hilal 2 0 0 2 2 Pachuca 2 0 2 0 0 (with inputs from AP)
