BERLIN (Reuters) - VfB Stuttgart beat third-tier Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 to lift the German Cup on Saturday thanks to goals from Nick Woltemade, Enzo Millot with a double and Deniz Undav.
Woltemade put Stuttgart in front after 15 minutes, beating goalkeeper Jonas Kersken with a low shot from the edge of the area, before Millot doubled the lead on the counter-attack seven minuets later and Undav adding a third goal in the 28th.
Millot scored again to make it 4-0 after 66 minutes but Bielefeld pulled a goal back through substitute Julian Kania eight minutes from full-time before Stuttgart's Josha Vagnoman netted an own goal in the 85th.
The win was Stuttgart's fourth Cup success and earned them a spot in the Europa League's league phase. They finished the Bundesliga campaign in ninth, two points off the European spots.

Soccer-Convicted former Dutch international Promes extradited to Netherlands

Soccer Football - Europa League - Group C - Leicester City v Spartak Moscow - King Power Stadium, Leicester, Britain - November 4, 2021 Spartak Moscow's Quincy Promes during the warm up before the match REUTERS/David Klein/File Photo AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been extradited by the United Arab Emirates to the Netherlands, where he is to serve jail sentences for drug trafficking and assault, Dutch prosecutors said on Friday. A Dutch court last year sentenced the former Ajax Amsterdam and Spartak Moscow forward to six years in absentia for his direct involvement with two shipments of cocaine from Brazil through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, to the Netherlands in 2020. In 2023, Promes was also sentenced in absentia to 18 months in jail for assault in connection with a fight in 2020 in which he stabbed a cousin in the knee. Promes has denied all charges and has filed an appeal in both cases. The 33-year-old, who has 50 caps for the Netherlands, was arrested in Dubai in March last year, at the request of the Dutch public prosecution service when he was at a training camp with Spartak Moscow. He was later released from detention under restrictions, which included that he not be allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates. Spartak Moscow then terminated his contract, after which he joined UAE second-tier club United FC of Dubai. (Reporting by Bart MeijerEditing by Toby Davis)

Italy will host the America's Cup for the first time in 2027, with Naples set to stage the 38th edition. Burling, 34, links up with the Italians just two months after ending his long-standing relationship with defenders New Zealand, with whom he won the Cup in 2017 and retained it in 2021 and 2024. Burling joined Team NZ after winning gold and silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics sailing with teammate Blair Tuke. The former New Zealand skipper will support both the sailing operations and technical development at Luna Rossa as they prepare for their latest Cup campaign. In addition to his three Olympic medals Burling also has six world titles in the 49er class, and is regarded as one of the sport's leading talents. "I've always loved racing against Luna Rossa and now to join this iconic team is a real honour. The innovation and competitiveness they bring to the Cup has always inspired me," Burling said in a statement. "I'm grateful for the warm welcome and I'm looking forward to working hard alongside a world-class team, doing my part to help win Luna Rossa's first America's Cup." CEO of Luna Rossa Max Sirena said, "Even though his exact role has yet to be defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, reinforcing Luna Rossa's core leadership group and contributing to key areas of our development program. "Peter brings tremendous sporting, technical, and personal value." (Reporting by Shifa Jahan in BengaluruEditing by Christian Radnedge)

Liverpool face Bournemouth in Premier League opener, Man Utd host Arsenal

LONDON: Liverpool will kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on Friday, August 15 while Arsenal head to Manchester United in a blockbuster clash on the opening weekend. Arne Slot's champions have the chance to secure the first points of the new season at Anfield as they launch the 2025/26 campaign, bidding for a record 21st English top-flight crown. Following the Bournemouth game Liverpool have tricky fixtures at Newcastle and at home to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, runners-up for the past three seasons. Thomas Frank's first match as Tottenham boss will come on August 16 at home against newly promoted Burnley, while Sunderland make their return to the Premier League against West Ham. The third newcomers, Leeds, play Everton on Monday, August 18. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, who ended last season empty-handed, will be desperate to get off to a winning start against Wolves at Molineux. Everton fans will have to wait until the second round of fixtures for their first league game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, when they will face Brighton. Liverpool dominated the Premier League last season, romping to a record-equalling 20th title with four games to spare in Slot's first season in charge. They have already strengthened their squad. Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal, reportedly worth up to £116 million ($156 million) to sign Florian Wirtz along with his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong. A deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is understood to be well-advanced. Ruben Amorim's Manchester United, who will be desperate to hit the ground running after a terrible season, have been handed a tough test with a home game against Arsenal on August 17. United finished 15th in the league, their lowest position since they were relegated in the 1973/74 season, and lost in the Europa League final against Tottenham. Amorim has started a squad rebuild, bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The season consists of 380 games over 33 weekends and five midweek rounds. It concludes on May 24 with matches including Manchester City against Aston Villa. The Premier League said the start date "allows for the maximum player rest time available – 83 clear days – from the end of the 2024/25 season." The World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States begins on June 11, 2026.
