Effenberg: Woltemade an option for Bayern to replace Kane in future

Former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg is pictured at "The Miami Beach Edition" Hotel, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup Group C soccer match between Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors. Sven Hoppe/dpa Former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg believes that VfB Stuttgat young talent Nick Woltemade is an option for Bayern Munich to replace top striker Harry Kane in the future. "He's a forward that should be focused on Bayern Munich, definitely. Not now, but whenever Harry Kane leaves," the former Bayern captain said during a media event on the sidelines of the Club World Cup in the United States. Advertisement Kane, 31, has a contract with Bayern until 2027, while the 23-year-old Woltemade has a deal with Stuttgart until 2028. "Nick Woltemade is a type of player and number nine that Bayern should already be thinking about. Who performs like he did in the German Cup final and so on, is already made for great ambitions," Effenberg said. After a strong season with Stuttgart and winning the Cup title, Woltemade is now having an impressive campaign at the under-21 Euros with Germany. He's the top scorer with four goals ahead of the quarter-finals against Italy on Saturday. He joined the U21 squad just a few days after participating in the Nations League Final Four with the senior national team. "I think that's great, that attitude. He could have said I need to rest, it's been a long season. But this is a big tournament. You can win a title there," Effenberg praised.

UEFA Nations League: Mbappé nets 50th goal for France in third-place match

Kylian Mbappe helped France win the Nations League third-place match as Les Bleus rallied from a lethargic start to defeat host nation Germany 2-0 in the tournament's consolation match. Aurelien Tchouameni set up Real Madrid teammate Mbappé to score his 50th international goal just before the break after Germany had dominated the first half. Mbappé set up substitute Michael Olise to seal the result in the 84th after a much-improved second-half performance from the visitors. Mbappé's 50 goals is now just behind Thierry Henry (51) and Olivier Giroud (57) in the all-time men's scoring list for France. "If you look at the first half, honestly, they were not bothered winning. But they still won," Germany captain Joshua Kimmich said. France coach Didier Deschamps had made his lack of enthusiasm for the game clear the day before, noting his team had little to gain from playing it, and it was apparent which side was more motivated in front of the Stuttgart fans. "The game is there, we'll play it," Deschamps had said. France was without injured Paris Saint-Germain stars Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola. Germany missed a host of chances then had Deniz Undav's equalizer ruled out for a foul by Niclas Fullkrug in the buildup. Both sides were forced to play for the consolation prize after losing their semifinals. Germany lost 2-1 to Portugal on Wednesday before France lost 5-4 to European champion Spain on Thursday. Spain was playing Portugal later in Munich. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Report: Germany star Wirtz flies to England for Liverpool medical

Germany's Florian Wirtz (L) and France's Manu Kone stand on the pitch after the UEFA Nations League soccer match between Germany and France at Stuttgart Arena. Federico Gambarini/dpa Germany star Florian Wirtz has flown to England to carry out his medical ahead of his big-money transfer to Liverpool, according to reports in German media. The Bild newspaper said a private plane took off from Cologne airport on Thursday afternoon to take the 22-year-old to Manchester, from where he will be driven to Liverpool to complete his signing from Bayer Leverkusen. Advertisement The deal for the young forward could be worth up to €150 million ($172 million) including bonuses, making Wirtz the most expensive signing in Bundesliga and Premier League history. Only Paris Saint-German's moves for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have ever carried a higher transfer fee. Wirtz is expected to sign a contract with the Reds until 2030. The German international had been a major target for top European clubs, including Leverkusen's Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, but the attacking midfielder is set to land with the Premier League champions.

Mercedes Makes 'Course Correction' to Extend Combustion Engine Life

It was only a few days ago that Audi announced plans to continue producing gas-powered cars longer than initially intended , and now its long-time rival, Mercedes, is essentially saying the same thing. Head honcho Ola Källenius admitted the Stuttgart-based automaker has had to make a 'course correction' and retain internal combustion engines longer than initially planned. As a refresher, the company announced a few years back that it aimed to go fully electric 'where market conditions allow' as early as 2030. The Mercedes chairman and CEO told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport that 'electrified high-tech combustion engines will run longer than we originally expected.' While he didn't provide an exact timeline, he referred to the dual gas-and-electric strategy as the optimal solution given the slower-than-expected EV adoption: 'In the current situation, I think the most rational approach is for an established manufacturer to do both and not neglect either technology." Photo by: Mercedes-Benz Automakers retreating from their previously lofty EV goals has fueled a misconception about a general decline in the electric car market. While it's true that some companies are struggling, including Mercedes, which reported a 23% drop in 2024, the overall segment is growing. The International Energy Agency reports EV sales jumped by more than 25% last year, reaching 17 million vehicles. Additionally, BloombergNEF's annual Electric Vehicle Outlook, published just yesterday, projects sales of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles will surge by 25% this year compared to 2024, reaching nearly 22 million units. As you'd expect, China is estimated to account for the lion's share, with almost two-thirds of PHEV and EV sales, according to the same study. As with rivals BMW and Audi, China remains Mercedes' largest market, despite a 7% decline in sales last year to 683,600 combustion and electric vehicles. Speaking of which, Källenius claims Chinese buyers 'don't just use their cars to get from A to B. For many, it's also a second living room.' Maybe that explains the heavy reliance on screens in recent models wearing the three-pointed star. Germany's luxury trio will continue to offer a mix of combustion and electric cars well into the 2030s, appealing to both camps. It remains unclear what will happen in countries that follow European Union regulations, which from the middle of the next decade will prohibit automakers from selling new vehicles that emit harmful pollutants. Some car companies are likely hoping for a delay in the ban, but the EU shows no signs of backing down. Zverev eases into Halle second round after coming to aid of injured spectator

June 18 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev's hunt for an elusive grasscourt title began with a clinical 6-2 6-1 victory over Marcos Giron in the first round of the Halle Open on Wednesday in a match interrupted by an advertising hoarding falling on spectators. During the opening set, a section of an advertising hoarding came crashing down from the upper tier onto spectators below, forcing the chair umpire to stop play. Zverev immediately procured an ice pack for the injured fans to use and waited patiently while tournament organisers scrambled to provide medical assistance. Reuters has contacted the organisers for comment on the status of the injured fans. The courtside announcer later said a woman who was injured was 'okay'. On court, Zverev finished the match with 23 winners in the 79-minute contest where Giron struggled to match the power of the German's first serve and had no answer when his opponent's returns found all corners of the court. World number three Zverev, still nursing the disappointment of Sunday's Stuttgart Open final defeat by Taylor Fritz, showed no mercy with the home fans firmly behind the towering second seed who has finished runner-up twice in Halle. "It was a great match for me, I thought it was quite high level. Maybe he wanted to play a bit better than he did, but all in all I felt like I didn't let him play that well, which was important for me," Zverev said. Giron held his own early in the opening set with some deft touches and drop shots, but his resistance crumbled against Zverev's thunderous serve, with the German finishing with 10 aces. The opening set's final game became an unexpected epic as Giron saved four set points before Zverev finally secured it after 54 minutes of play. Any hopes of a comeback quickly evaporated as Zverev reeled off seven consecutive games to take a 3-0 lead in the second set as Giron's shoulders slumped. Giron's double-fault count also increased at the wrong time and the German pounced to break before serving out the set. "I feel like when he's on top of the ball, when he's allowed to play, it's very difficult with him because he moves quite well. He can control the rally quite well, so I had to take that away," Zverev added. Earlier, eighth seed Karen Khachanov dispatched Belgium's Zizou Bergs 7-5 6-3 despite a nasty fall on the grass. Third seed Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are in action in the last 16 later.
