Former Arsenal star reveals why Royal Ascot is so great
The FA Cup will always hold a special place in Ray Parlour's heart.
Not only did he lift the famous trophy an incredible four times during his career with Arsenal, he also netted a spectacular goal in the 2002 final against Chelsea.
But the former Gunner star says that when it comes to his favourite sporting events, Royal Ascot is right up there with the showpiece finale of the English football season.
'Royal Ascot is a superb spectacle,' says Parlour. 'The top hat and tails dress code looks great, and it's a chance for most to get dressed up and enjoy a day at the races.
'The FA Cup Final is also a great one because of how big the competition is for English fans. For me, growing up, the FA Cup final was a special day in the house where we all watched it together on TV. To score in a final was incredible.
'And Wimbledon is a great event to go to, with fans from all over the world.
'But horse racing has been part of British culture for a very long time and Royal Ascot is an icon of national sport, with the quality of racing. It gets royal treatment as well, so it's 100 per cent up there for sure as one of the year's greatest events.
'As a footballer, I got more into horse racing as the lads were all keen on it. I have owned horses over the years and had a few named after me as well. It's a great day out, and it's great to be part of owning a horse, to go down to the training yard to see the horse, and then the race day is the pinnacle.'
This year's event starts on Tuesday 17 June, with more than 300,000 visitors expected to attend the five-day festival at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
In total, there will be 35 races taking place, with more than £10 million in prize money on offer. No race will be run for less than £110,000.
The two highest-earning races are the Prince Of Wales' Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, with a huge prize pot of £1 million for each race.
Los Angeles is the favourite to cross the line first in the Prince of Wales Stakes, with NetBet offering odds of 17/5, followed by Economics at 21/5 and Map of Stars at 11/2.
In the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, Lazzat is the 7/2 frontrunner, Inisherin at 24/5 and Storm Boy at 6/1.
And the winner of this year's Ascot Gold Cup will receive an eye-watering £650,000 prize.
Legendary trainer Aidan O'Brien will be looking to add to his record-breaking eight wins in the race this year, with his horse Illinois 7/5 favourite with NetBet to triumph ahead of Candelari at 7/2 and Trawlerman at 21/5.
As well as NetBet Sport offering great odds on all UK and international horse racing events, NetBet Casino has welcome offers and promotions, including up to 500 free spins for new customers (full T&Cs can be found here). Sport-specific promotions include Wheel of Sportune, daily prizes, and Correct Score Predictor, with a jackpot of up to £5,000.
'I know Aidan O'Brien is the best flat trainer at the minute,' adds Parlour. 'He has so many top horses in his stable who can win the sprints and longer distance races. So naturally he is one to follow.
'Looking at a jockey to follow, then it's Ryan Moore. He is such a great jockey and proves time and time again, the quality he has in the saddle.
'From an English perspective, Charlie Appleby and John Gosden are trainers I like to follow at these meetings too.
'Sometimes you receive a tip and follow that one, or look at the in-form trainers and jockeys.
'For me, especially in the big races, I may just go with horse number 15, which was my number when I played.'

Martin Zubimendi announcement plan emerges as Arsenal face transfer delay
Arsenal are set to confirm Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as their first summer signing in a major coup for Mikel Arteta Martin Zubimendi's transfer to Arsenal is not expected to be made official until July - even though the player has already travelled to London with his agent to put the finishing touches on his switch from Real Sociedad. The Spain international was in the capital on Friday to meet with Gunners officials as Mikel Arteta's side hone in on their first big statement deal of the summer window. However, Sociedad want the move to be ratified next month for their financial records as the current football financial year is due to end on June 30. Arsenal are also expected to pay slightly over Zubimendi's £51million release clause and the final fee could yet reach £55m all in. The extra £4m, though sources remain tight-lipped on the final figures at this stage, would entitle them to more favourable payment terms, spread across a longer period of time and significantly, would give them further flexibility in the market amid the tightening of PSR regulations. Real Madrid had been tipped to hijack Arsenal's swoop for the 26-year-old following Xabi Alonso's arrival at the Bernabeu but Zubimendi's impending transfer was already agreed in principle several months ago and the Gunners have long been operating with the belief that he would be joining this summer. Meanwhile, Thomas Partey's contract situation currently looks bleak as discussions have not progressed between the parties and barring any late U-turn, the Ghanaian is set to become a free agent at the end of the month. The 32-year-old has been offered to a number of top European clubs including Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in the past week but at this stage, it is still not clear where he could yet end up as his priority has always been to stay at Arsenal. If Partey does indeed depart, Arsenal will actively seek to recruit another midfielder after also losing Jorginho to Flamengo, although Zubimendi is expected to fill the void of the Ghana international at the base of Arteta's engine room. Arsenal are poised to ramp up their pursuit of new arrivals in the coming weeks with a striker still considered both Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta's top priority. Interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres remains ongoing and at this moment in time, Arsenal are seemingly still yet to commit to going all-out for either player as both deals remain there to be struck. Both Sesko and Gyokeres are thought to be keen on moves to the Emirates.

Trawlerman triumph highlights fruitful Royal Ascot for Gosden team
Field Of Gold and Ombudsman had already produced sublime performances in the St James's Palace Stakes and Prince of Wales's Stakes respectively during the first two days of the Royal meeting, but the elusive Gold Cup victory for the Clarehaven team's staying stalwart rubber stamped a stellar five days. John Gosden said: 'It's been a terrific week and I think the highlight must be Trawlerman. he's been in the yard five years, he's by Golden Horn and he wears his heart on his sleeve. 'He's the most genuine horse and in his races he will do everything, but when you're with him in person he is a kind, sweet, gentle soul, and for him to run the race he did having coming second last year – what a fantastic result for the horse and for the sport.' Trawlerman won Thursday's Gold Cup (David Davies/PA) The Gosden team finished the week with five winners, the same number as O'Brien, but took the prize due to on extra silver medal they picked up through the week. Gosden Sr has previously won the award twice on his own and praised his son Thady after winning the award for a second time as a training partnership. John Gosden – who registered his 70th Royal Ascot winner this week – continued: 'Our week started very strongly with the right races and everyone working at home had the horses spot-on. 'They've run very well since, finishing second and third and second and third, and that of course counts towards winning this when you're at five winners all with Aidan O'Brien. 'Thady has been with me about eight years already – and the rest – so, poor chap, it must be getting a bit annoying! 'But there is nothing like this meeting, it's our Olympics, and it's great to win this. Without him I wouldn't be as on the ball at all. It's been a great combination.' Field Of Gold impressed on Tuesday (David Davies/PA) Reflecting on Field Of Gold's dazzling Group One victory which lit up the opening day of the fixture, he added: 'Field Of Gold is a horse who has just improved and improved and improved. 'His sire Kingman was a peerless miler, but he has shown the electric turn of foot his sire had. It was a great race with all three Guineas winners from north-western Europe in the same race. He is very exciting for Juddmonte and for all of us.' Ballydoyle handler O'Brien may have been thwarted in his quest for a fourth successive leading trainer prize, but his number one jockey Ryan Moore was out on his own as top rider for the 12th time. He capped yet another fine week in Berkshire with his seventh success of the meeting aboard Willie Mullins' Sober in the concluding Queen Alexandra Stakes to finish two clear of Oisin Murphy. Sober won the final race of the meeting for Ryan Moore (John Walton/PA) Moore said: 'It's great to ride seven winners, Aidan's horses were in great form all work, when you're riding for Aidan and Willie you're going to ride winners.' Both Coolmore and Wathnan Racing finished the week with five winners, but it was Coolmore who came out on top for the third year running on account of their superior record with placed horses. Coolmore's MV Magnier said: 'It means a lot to everyone. The guys and everyone put everything into this week, and for Aidan and Ryan to do such a good job, it's incredible. 'We're very grateful and we are very lucky to be here. We are very lucky to have the King and Queen present every day this week. It's a big deal for our business.'
