Bengaluru's 'Garbage Tax' nets ₹350 crore in just two months: Report
Bengaluru's newly introduced 'garbage tax' has generated a staggering ₹350 crore within just two months, nearly half of the projected annual revenue, Deccan Herald reported.
The amount was collected as a solid waste management (SWM) fee attached to property tax bills since April 1.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which has been collecting the fee on behalf of Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd (BSWML), confirmed that the response to the levy has far outpaced expectations. In May alone, the SWM user fee brought in ₹230 crore, contributing to a total of ₹2,600 crore in property tax collections over April and May, the report added.

BSWML, the agency overseeing the city's waste management, has already drawn up an ambitious plan to utilise the funds. Among the priorities are the deployment of upgraded auto-tippers for door-to-door garbage pickup and a revamp of the waste transportation system. The civic agency is planning to appoint a single private firm to manage wet, dry, and sanitary waste across major assembly constituencies, a contract valued at ₹540 crore annually, the DH report further added.
Additionally, the city is expected to see new integrated waste processing facilities coming up in four zones. Although the state cabinet has greenlit the initiative, financial details are awaited.
A separate project to handle construction and demolition debris is also underway, but has come under scrutiny after a single firm reportedly won all five related tenders.
The garbage tax is calculated based on the built-up area of residential properties. The monthly fee structure is as follows:
Up to 600 sq ft: ₹10
600–1,000 sq ft: ₹50
1,000–2,000 sq ft: ₹100
2,000–3,000 sq ft: ₹150
3,000–4,000 sq ft: ₹200
Above 4,000 sq ft: ₹400
The Bengaluru NavaNirmana Party (BNP), a local political outfit, has launched the #IWontPay campaign, calling the garbage tax unjustified in the absence of elected BBMP representatives. The group is demanding that the government first hold long-pending civic elections and release detailed project reports and audited financials before collecting any new fees.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders have also urged BBMP officials to withdraw the SWM fee, citing financial strain on both households and businesses.

CM flying squad to probe MCM sanitation contract
Gurgaon: The CM flying squad has initiated an investigation into MCM's sanitation contract with Akanksha Enterprises, demanding documents such as tender details, contractor payments, and supervision records. The probe follows MCM's recent Rs 9.2 crore penalty on the contractor for inadequate service delivery. The contract, initially valid till Feb 2025, was extended to May. "A letter was sent to the MCM officials seeking details of the contract so that the CM flying squad could probe the matter. A sanitation standing committee reviewed the work of the agency between Feb 20, 2025, and May 19, 2025. The urban local bodies (ULB) department stipulated that all SWM payments would be processed via the SWM monitoring portal starting Jan 2025. The committee observed a significant gap between the actual deployment figures shown on the SWM portal. It revealed personnel shortfalls of 1,315 in Feb, 1,355 in March, 1,533 in April, and 1,284 in May. Regarding equipment deployment, the committee's review showed that the agency provided only 101 rickshaw carts instead of the required 468 and merely 38 tractor trolleys against the specified 94, indicating substantial shortages in equipment provision for their work in the MCM area for three months.

Karnataka high court stays new BBMP tender, indicates possible contempt
Bengaluru: The high court has stayed BBMP's new tender notification for solid waste management issued on May 28, while directing the state govt to submit an affidavit explaining its actions. Justice M Nagaprasanna said the move appeared to be prima facie contempt of court. The order came while hearing a review petition filed by the Bengaluru Mahanagara Swachate Mattu Lorry Malikara Hagoo Gutthigedarara Sangha. The petitioner challenged the fresh tender notification and sought a review of the court's earlier judgment dated April 22, which had upheld a previous BBMP tender issued on Nov 7, 2024. In the earlier order, the judge had allowed the petitioners to participate in the new tender process and directed the state to submit an affidavit outlining a revised timeline for completing it. "The state shall redraw the timeline for the completion of the process of tender at an outer limit of four months, if not earlier. The timeline shall be filed before this court, by way of an affidavit, for its strict adherence," Justice Nagaprasanna had said in the April 22 order. He had added that if the timeline was violated, the petitioners had the liberty to return to the court. According to the petitioners, the issuance of the new request for proposal (RFP) two days later further undermined the court's April 22 judgment, where the state's undertaking was explicitly recorded. The court will continue hearing the matter after the affidavit is filed.
