Deepika Padukone wore an exquisite Tommy Hilfiger ensemble to the 2017 Met Gala. The gown was made of white satin with a plunging neckline, thigh-high slit and long train. She completed her ensemble with diamond-studded flowers in her hair and long drop earrings. Her makeup was kept simple, emphasising her innate beauty with a nude lip and delicate eye makeup.
However, for the 'Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between' theme, Deepika's look was considered 'safe' by many. Later, Rihanna 'liked' a post on Instagram that said, 'What the Met Gala theme was vs how everybody showed up." On one side, the post featured extravagant dresses and on the other, a white satin gown. Back then, some saw Rihanna's reaction as a dig at Deepika, while others argued that the singer must not know the actress.
The image has resurfaced on Reddit and has gone viral again. One person wrote, 'This shade applies to way too many people who put zero effort. I don't think it's specific to Deepika here." Another added, 'Rightfully so, cause what was this? Her airport looks are more interesting than this." One person wrote, 'Pfffft, Rihanna prolly doesn't know who Deepika is😭." Another comment read, 'But it's true she didn't follow the theme."
Deepika returned to the Gala in 2018 with a red Prabal Gurung gown. However, it was her pink Zac Posen look in 2019 that caught everyone's attention. Immersed in the aura of a life-sized Barbie doll, Deepika's 2019 Met Gala presentation was her most iconic to date. She wore a customised bubblegum pink strapless gown. The outfit featured a form-fitting neckline that drew attention to her décolletage and a multi-tiered, billowy skirt with subtle embroidery.
