Speeding SUV kills eight sheep, dog in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: Eight sheep and a dog were killed in Coimbatore on Friday morning, after a speeding car collided into the herd on Thanneerpandhal-Vilankurichi Road. Twelve sheep and a shepherd were also injured.
The incident occurred at 3 am on the wee hours of Friday. The driver fled from the crime scene without responding to the mishap. The Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW- East) police of Coimbatore city formed a team to trace the car and driver.
Police sources said, P Subramaniam (47) of Pappampatti in Coimbatore district was rearing 500 sheep. S Ravichandran (60) of Neikkaranpatti near Palani, was working under Subramaniam as a shepherd. Ravichandran and four other shepherds took the sheep to Athipalayam from Pappampatti for grazing on Friday morning.
At around 3 am, when the flock was at Kalaivani Nagar on Thanneerpandhal-Vilankurichi Road, a speeding car hit the herd and killed eight of the sheep and an escort dog on the spot. 12 of the sheep sustained severe injuries. The car also hit Ravichandran, who was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said police sources.
The TIW police arranged for a postmortem on the sheep and dog. The injured sheep were sent to a nearby veterinary hospital. Police booked a case for further investigation.
Police sources said the herd was hit by a white Sports Utility Vehicle. While checking CCTV footage, the registration number of the vehicle was not visible, as there was poor visibility due to the rain.

Jaipur: A man wanted for rape charges under the POCSO Act was arrested by the city police Thursday after being on the run for four years. The accused, Mohan Singh (27) was hiding in Gurgaon under a fake identity and working at a glass factory. To track him down, police officers posed as labourers, scouring several factories in the area before finally locating and arresting him. According to DCP (East) Tejaswini Gautam, Mohan Singh, a resident of Neem Ka Thana in Sikar, was initially arrested in 2019 after a case was filed against him at the Pratap Nagar police station. Although he was produced in court, he managed to escape and went underground. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and a reward of Rs 20,000 was later announced for any information leading to his capture. The breakthrough came when police received a tip-off that he was hiding in the Delhi-Haryana region. A team from Jaipur began searching factories in Gurgaon, pretending to look for jobs. After five days of searching, they located his roommate, who provided key details about Singh's whereabouts. Police said Singh assumed a new identity using his brother's Aadhaar card and took up work at the glass factory. He recently returned home due to an injury, and based on information from his roommate, the police conducted a raid and arrested him. The Pratap Nagar police are currently interrogating Singh.

Social activists demand impartial probe in constable assault case, allege role of senior police officer's son
Demanding an impartial probe in a case where a constable was allegedly beaten, dragged by his collar by four youths including reportedly the son of an Additional Director General (ADG)-rank officer, a group of civil society members on Friday (June 13, 2025) visited Hazratganj police station and met senior police officers amid conflicting claims and alleged deliberate inaction. The incident happened on the night of May 29 near K.D. Singh Babu Stadium's police outpost under Hazratganj police station limits. 'We learned during the place of occurrence visit that people from DGP's office visited the place for a few days after the incident, Lucknow police seized many CCTV cameras from the vicinity and took them away. We were told before the incident the group of four youths took food items from neighboring shop and didn't pay. We met DCP (East) and demanded legal action,' Amitabh Thakur, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and a social activist, who runs Azad Adhikar Sena, told The Hindu. In the case, the police constable was assaulted and locked inside a police outpost by four youths when he asked them to stop fighting. The four assaulters allegedly from affluent backgrounds, attacked the constable, tore his uniform, and vandalised government property. A First Information Report (FIR) filed on May 30 came out in public only on June 12. Three accused were arrested after the incident and later released on bail while the fourth accused, who escaped from the spot, is believed to be the son of a senior ADG-rank police officer.

Man, son among three killed in two road accidents in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: Three people, including a father-son duo, died in two road accidents in Coimbatore city on Friday morning. In the first accident, a 36-year-old man and his nine-year-old son were run over by a speeding tipper truck near Saravanampatti. The deceased have been identified as Rajesh of Saravanampatti and his son R Vinith. Police said Rajesh, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was working as a manager at an IT firm in Keeranatham in Coimbatore district. He was residing with his wife and two sons in an apartment on the Thudiyalur Road near Saravanampatti. The accident happened around 5 am when Rajesh was taking his elder son to a skating academy. When he was trying to take a left turn to the Kalapatti Road from the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road, a tipper truck also took the left turn and hit the motorcycle. The father-son duo fell on the road and came under the front wheel of the truck. They were dragged for at least 20 feet from the accident spot. On being informed, the traffic investigation wing (TIW) police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to the Govt Medical College and ESI Hospital at Varadharajapuram for postmortem. After the postmortem, the bodies were handed over to the family members. In the second accident, R Karthikeyan, 47, of Vellakinar in Coimbatore city, died when a speeding bus hit his motorcycle from behind on the Kavundampalayam flyover. TIW (West) police said Karthikeyan was working in a private company. The accident happened when he was on his way to office. When he was travelling on the Kavundampalayam flyover, a private bus hit his motorcycle from behind. Karthikeyan lost control and was thrown off the motorcycle. He sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. The body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Further investigations were on.
