Social activists demand impartial probe in constable assault case, allege role of senior police officer's son

Demanding an impartial probe in a case where a constable was allegedly beaten, dragged by his collar by four youths including reportedly the son of an Additional Director General (ADG)-rank officer, a group of civil society members on Friday (June 13, 2025) visited Hazratganj police station and met senior police officers amid conflicting claims and alleged deliberate inaction.
The incident happened on the night of May 29 near K.D. Singh Babu Stadium's police outpost under Hazratganj police station limits.
'We learned during the place of occurrence visit that people from DGP's office visited the place for a few days after the incident, Lucknow police seized many CCTV cameras from the vicinity and took them away. We were told before the incident the group of four youths took food items from neighboring shop and didn't pay. We met DCP (East) and demanded legal action,' Amitabh Thakur, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and a social activist, who runs Azad Adhikar Sena, told The Hindu.
In the case, the police constable was assaulted and locked inside a police outpost by four youths when he asked them to stop fighting. The four assaulters allegedly from affluent backgrounds, attacked the constable, tore his uniform, and vandalised government property.
A First Information Report (FIR) filed on May 30 came out in public only on June 12. Three accused were arrested after the incident and later released on bail while the fourth accused, who escaped from the spot, is believed to be the son of a senior ADG-rank police officer.

Punjab Police busts Pak-linked terror module; one held, six pistols seized

Punjab Police on Saturday said it has dismantled a Pakistan-backed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module operated by UK-based handler Dharam Singh alias Dharma Sandhu. Police have arrested a local operative of the module and recovered six foreign-made pistols from his possession, DGP Gaurav Yadav said. The accused has been identified as Onkar Singh alias Nawab, a resident of Jalalusma village in Amritsar district. The seized weapons, smuggled via drones from across the border, include four 9 mm Glock pistols and two .30 bore pistols, the DGP said. Dharam Singh, who operated the terror module, is a close associate of Pakistan-based terrorist Harvinder Singh alias Rinda. Further investigation is underway to unearth the broader network of the module, the DGP said. Sharing operation details, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the arrest followed precise intelligence inputs and coordination. "During interrogation, the accused disclosed that the weapons delivered via drones were meant for disruptive activities," Yadav said. Preliminary investigation revealed that Onkar Singh was part of a sleeper cell activated by foreign-based handlers to destabilise the state. "The weapons were meant to be distributed among local operatives to execute targeted killings and terror activities Punjab. We are working to uncover the entire network and its international linkages," Bhullar said.

ADG Nikhil Gupta guides cops on better policing practices

Nashik: ADG (Law & Order) Nikhil Gupta on Saturday instructed senior police officers of Nashik city police and Nashik Range to enhance the detection rate of property offences, decrease the backlog of citizen applications, and prioritise tasks related to police stations. He urged officers to utilise the eSakshya app, which the police use to record digital evidence. Gupta directed ACPs of the police commissionerate and SDPOs of district police to visit each police station within their jurisdiction at least once a week. During these visits, these officers should review the applications that the police stations receive, examine the case diaries of Investigation Officers (IOs), inspect documents related to accidental deaths, and provide guidance to the IOs. These measures aim to increase the detection rate. "Routine work often leads to certain things related to policing to get missed, which were pointed out to the officers. Nodal officers to be appointed in every police station to curb crime: DGP

1 2 3 4 Patna: Director general of police (DGP) Vinay Kumar said here on Saturday that at least one police officer from each police station would be made a nodal officer to work in tandem with the representatives of the gram panchayat and gram kutchahary concerned to control crime in the region effectively. Addressing a workshop on the "Role of police in the local govt", organised by the office of the chair professor of panchayati raj at Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) here, the DGP said if petty crimes are nipped in the bud at the local level, more than 80% of crimes would automatically end in the state. He requested the chair professor of panchayati raj to impart training to the inspectors and DSP-level officials regarding the effective functioning of the panchayati raj system. State panchayati raj department's director, Prashant Kumar, stressed the need for training for the elected representatives of the local govt. He said in order to strengthen the panchayati raj system, 8,093 lower division clerks are going to be appointed soon. He pointed out that any common man can lodge a case in gram kutchahary through an online portal.
