Specialist dementia support coming to Newport high street

Dementia UK's Admiral Nurse clinics will return to Wales this summer, offering free face-to-face support at selected Nationwide branches, including Newport, in a familiar and private setting.
The clinics, delivered by Dementia UK's specialist Admiral Nurses, are open to anyone affected by dementia and provide practical and emotional guidance on everything from memory concerns and diagnosis to financial planning and legal matters.
Ruby Guild, Admiral Nurse at Dementia UK, said: "We're looking forward to returning to Wales.
"Nationwide branches offer a safe and private space for people to access specialist support for dementia, and the Fairer Futures partnership is helping us bring face-to-face support to people in a familiar location."
Nationwide's Newport branch, located at 33/34 Commercial Street, will host the clinics on July 1, 2, and 3.
Appointments can be booked through Dementia UK's website.
Debbie Crosbie, chief executive officer of Nationwide, said: "Nationwide wants to help people live their best life possible, for as long as possible.
"By working with Dementia UK to fund more Admiral Nurses and turning our branches into dementia clinics, we're helping to tackle the country's leading cause of death.
"We believe this and Nationwide Fairer Futures will change hundreds of thousands of lives for the better."
The clinics are part of Nationwide's Fairer Futures social impact programme, which focuses on four major UK issues: family poverty, youth homelessness, dementia, and cancer.
Through this partnership, Nationwide is funding 30 Admiral Nurses and will have hosted dementia clinics in 200 branches by the end of the summer.

Urgent recall issued for chocolate sold nationwide with ingredient that could kill

The FDA is warning Americans of a popular chocolate treat that could cause a 'life-threatening allergic reaction.' Lipari Foods of Warren, Michigan, is recalling 14oz packages of its JLM Branded Dark Chocolate Nonpareils because they may contain undeclared milk. People who have a milk allergy may be at risk of a severe reaction if they eat the product. The recall was initiated after Lipari Foods was notified by Weaver Nut Company that their product may contain milk but was distributed in packaging that did not reveal its possible presence. The candies were distributed nationwide in retail stores. They come in a 14oz clear plastic containers marked with the lot numbers 28202501A, 29202501A, 23202504A, 14202505A, 15202505A, and 03202506A on the bottom label. Customers who bought the product are urged to discard it or return it to the place of purchase. No illnesses or adverse events have been reported in connection to the recall, according to the FDA. Milk can could cause severe reactions in the 30 to 50million Americans with lactose intolerance and the 7million with dairy allergies. People who are lactose intolerant cannot properly digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. This occurs because their bodies don't produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which is needed to break down lactose. Undigested lactose then travels to the gut and gets fermented by bacteria, leading to digestive distress. Symptoms usually start within 30 minutes to two hours of consuming a dairy product and include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, bloating and gas. Additionally, roughly two percent of Americans - 6.6million - are allergic to milk. Symptoms of an allergy include hives, wheezing, coughing, congestion, face and throat swelling and in severe cases, anaphylaxis. This is a life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs very quickly after being exposed to an allergen. It triggers an extreme immune response, leading to dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath and vomiting. If not treated quickly with epinephrine (adrenaline), which can be administered via injection like an EpiPen or nasal spray, a person can die.

Urgent nationwide recall for cough medicine contaminated with deadly bacteria

Children's cough medicine has been recalled for potentially containing deadly bacteria. New York-based Medtech Products Inc voluntarily recalled five lots of its Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup because they were found to contain Bacillus cereus, which causes two types of stomach virus: diarrheal and emetic (vomiting). The former causes stomach cramps and diarrhea that start eight to 16 hours after consuming contaminated food, while the other leads to nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting within one to six hours. Though most healthy adults and children recover on their own, exposure to high levels of Bacillus cereus can produce toxins that attack the liver and bloodstream, causing death. The five contaminated lots were distributed nationwide through various retailers and online from December 14, 2022, through June 4, 2025. The UPC code is 7-56184-10737-9. The bacteria makes the medicines no longer shelf stable, according to the FDA 's notice. No illnesses have been reported. Scroll down to see all lot numbers and expiration dates. Bacillus cereus causes about 63,000 illnesses a year in the US. However, research suggests it has only killed a handful of people in the last decade, and specific figures are not reported. In these rare cases, enterotoxins produced by the bacteria can attack the liver and cause it to fail. It may also cause a bloodstream infection that triggers multi-organ failure. It spreads to food via soil, food and marine sponges. It's typically found in boiled or fried rice, cooked vegetables and meats, pasta, custards, casseroles, pastries, salads, soups, ice cream, vanilla sauce and herbs and spices, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The contaminated syrup is packaged in a four fluid-ounce amber bottle and sold in an outer carton with the lot code on both the bottle and carton label. It's unclear how many bottles are in each lot. Consumers who have purchased the recalled cough syrups should stop using them immediately and contact their doctor if they have any symptoms. Medtech will issue refunds to customers who purchased contaminated products. Consumers with questions can contact Medtech via email at medicalaffairs@ through its website or by phone at (800 754-8853 Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm EST. online form or by mail or fax.
