Miss Great Britain Glasgow finalist raises dementia awareness after gran's shock diagnosis

Jenna Kinnaird has been named a finalist in the glitzy ceremony which will take place in Larkhall's Radstone Hotel on June 20. A big-hearted accounts assistant from Hamilton is raising awareness of a cause close to her heart as she sets her sights on the Miss Great Britain Glasgow crown next week. Jenna Kinnaird, who volunteers for Kilbryde Hospice, has been named a finalist in the glitzy ceremony which will take place in Larkhall's Radstone Hotel on June 20. ‌ The stunning 20-year-old brunette will compete against dozens of other beauties for the coveted title for the chance to win a place in the Miss Great Britain national final in October. ‌ And while the former St John Ogilvie High School pupil says it would be a "dream" to win the contest, Jenna, who is competing for the second year in a row, is most proud to be raising awareness and funds for Dementia UK following her gran's shock diagnosis. Download the Lanarkshire Live app today She told Lanarkshire Live:"My gran was 71 when she diagnosed with dementia at Christmas last year. She had been working as a home carer for people with memory loss right up to when she was diagnosed. It was very fast moving as she was working at the start of the week, and by the end of the week she could no longer live alone. "It completely turned our lives upside down when her memory deteriorated. I knew I had to look into how the dementia affected my gran's capability to live alone and wanted to educate others on the whole process that comes with it and how it not only affects the older generation, but young people too. "My family and I never thought dementia would be something that we would have to deal with so soon. I knew I had to use my platform to let people know there is help out there." ‌ As well as taking part in a charity run for Hamilton Judo Club, Jenna was determined to raise funds for Dementia UK after her gran's sudden illness. Last month she held a quiz night at Giovanni's Italian Kitchen restaurant in her hometown which raised over £600. Shy and introverted as a child, Jenna says pageanting has given her the confidence to shine on stage and she can't wait to show the judges all the good work she has been doing for her local community in the lead up to the final. ‌ Jenna will compete in four rounds on pageant day in the hope of being crowned Miss Great Britain Glasgow: interview, swimwear, fashion and eveningwear. Jenna added: "I was always really shy and anxious as a child. In school I was quite quiet, very introverted. "I've always been more confident on social media and was approached by Miss Great Britain Glasgow via Instagram. I just went for it and it definitely built my confidence so much that I decided to do it again this year. ‌ "I'm so excited to take part in the finals. I'm excited to show the judges all the work that I've put in this year, compared to last year. "I love my community and I love helping out so I want to show that I'm prepared to make that time for others. With all the things I've done and the people I've met, I already have a feeling of proudness. I'm getting to go up on that stage and show everything I've done which I feel really good about." She continued: "And raising money and awareness for a charity so close to my heart, it does already feel like I've won. It's everyone's dream to win, but I'd be so happy for any of the other girls to win as we've became such good friends, it's so nice to see. ‌ "My family are over the moon - they're my biggest supporters. And I don't drive so they're my taxi rides here, there and everywhere! My sister Hanna is autistic and really struggles with her confidence so she always tells me how much it means to her that I get up on the stage." *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Pride of Britain Awards 2025: Nominations now open to vote for your unsung Midlands heroes

Today is the national launch of the Pride of Britain (POB) Awards. The awards recognise everyday people and celebrate the bravery and brilliance of those who display true grit and determination to work tirelessly to support charities. While celebrities attend one of the biggest events in the showbiz calendar, it is the real people who are the stars of the show. Each year, two fantastic fundraisers get to represent our region at an awards ceremony in London, and are even in with a chance of winning the overall ITV Regional Fundraiser of the Year award. Last year, the West Midlands winner was Manny Singh Kang from Wolverhampton. He was named as our "Regional Fundraiser of the Year" in September, and topped that by being named the overall "Fundraiser of the Year" at the star-studded event in London in October. He won the overall award after taking part in extreme fundraising challenges to raise money for Dementia UK. The East Midlands winner was Agnes Nisbett from Leicester, who pioneered the Born Whilst Sleeping programme to support grieving couples. This included creating a special room at the Leicester Royal Infirmary where mothers who'd lost a baby could grieve in private. Who can be nominated? New web retailer BookKind pledges 10% of all sales to charity

A new online bookshop will donate 10% of the value of all purchases to charity. BookKind, launching on Thursday, will allow customers to pick between eight charities working across health, literacy, environment, race equality and international aid to donate to when purchasing books. The initiative will work in a similar way to which donates a portion of sales to independent bookshops. 'You could probably buy your books from cheaper places, but we keep our prices aligned with the recommended retail price so that as much money as possible goes to charity,' said a spokesperson from BookKind. The shop was set up by e-commerce company Monwell, which also runs bookshops for media outlets including the Guardian. 'Having successfully launched bookshops for big media brands such as the Guardian and the Times, we wanted to do something on our own – and to give back,' said Sara Montgomery, co-founder and CEO of Monwell. The company plans to 'grow BookKind into one of the UK's leading book retailers while making a meaningful impact by supporting charities that help the most vulnerable people in society and address critical global challenges.' The eight charities readers can donate to, chosen by Monwell team members, are Dementia UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, War Child UK, Read for Good, Surfers Against Sewage, Mental Health Foundation, Runnymede Trust – the race equality think tank – and Maggie's, a cancer care charity. 'The money raised throughout the year will help us offer vital practical and emotional support to people with cancer and their families across the country,' said Adam Feder, head of corporate partnerships at Maggie's. 'We were warmed by the staff selection of War Child following an incredibly difficult 2024 for children, young people and caregivers affected by war globally,' said George Baverstock of War Child UK. Literary delights delivered direct to you after newsletter promotion BookKind will feature reading lists themed around particular social, health, political and environmental issues, and work with publishers on campaigns for new books related to the eight charity causes. 'With representation comes inspiration, and so we're proud to support BookKind's ambition to broaden people's literary collections to include more books by authors of colour and from a range of different backgrounds and perspectives,' said Ellie Ikiebe of Runnymede Trust. 'This is how we can build empathy and a sense of belonging and understanding in an increasingly fractured society.' Each charity will have a dedicated page that will act as its online bookshop. Throughout the year, a rotating 'featured charity' slot will highlight their work. 'We know that reading can be a powerful tool for mental wellbeing, reducing stress and providing a moment of calm,' said Alexa Charnley, Mental Health Foundation's director of fundraising and communications. BookKind 'not only encourages the joy of reading but also enables people to support causes they care about.' 'From comfort and entertainment to learning about the world, visiting different places and making new friends, books have so much to offer,' said Ella Mason of Read for Good. BookKind also plans to 'carry out regular 'Acts of BookKindness'' by sending books to schools and hospitals.
