Variable message system comes up at Red Cross junction roundabout in Coimbatore
A variable message system (VMS) that has been installed at the Red Cross junction roundabout will create awareness among the public on social issues and road safety.
Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar inaugurated the new arrangement in the presence of Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Ashok Kumar and G. Manuneethi, Divisional Engineer (Road Safety) for Coimbatore Circle.
The VMS consists of a large LED board mounted on an aesthetically designed metal structure. The LED board will display awareness messages on road safety, drug abuse, traffic violations, crimes against children and women, child labour and other social issues.
C. Palanivelu, Chairman of GEM Hospital and Research Centre, sponsored the VMS while JS Associate Development (I) Pvt Ltd supported the installation, said the police.
According to Mr. Ashok Kumar, the VMS will not display motion contents as they might divert the attention of motorists. The system will only display awareness contents as still images. He said that more such arrangements could be installed across the city if sponsors supported with corporate social responsibility funds.

Hyderabad traffic police to use cameras on high-rises for ‘eagle view' monitoring
The Hyderabad police are installing cameras on multi-storey buildings across the city to get an 'Eagle View' of traffic movement and congestion points. The initiative, supported by building owners, aims to help traffic officials detect problems in real time, alert ground staff, and suggest immediate solutions. This was announced during a traffic review meeting held on Friday by C.V. Anand, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad. Mr. Anand said that the average speed of vehicles in Hyderabad has increased from 17–18 kilometres per hour last year to 24–25 kilometres per hour now, thanks to the efforts of the traffic police. 'Around 1,600 new vehicles are being added to Hyderabad roads every day. Across the three Commissionerates, approximately 91 lakh vehicles are on the road daily,' said the Commissioner. Meanwhile, Mr. Anand said 'Operation Rope' has shown good results and will be strengthened further through a more scientific approach. On VIP movement, he said traffic is now being managed in a more planned manner. Instructions from the Chief Minister to avoid long traffic halts during his travel are being followed strictly, he added. 'About 80% of the traffic signals in Hyderabad now run on auto mode, helping improve the flow of vehicles. For traffic violations, the department is focusing more on the quality of penalties rather than the number of fines, which has led to a decrease in the overall fines being issued,' said the officer. He further added that drone cameras are already in use for monitoring traffic, and Google is providing technical assistance in addition to Google Maps to improve the traffic system. Traffic marshals To address staff shortage, the traffic department is introducing the 'Traffic Marshal' system, where corporate companies can appoint marshals under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These marshals will be trained by the police and used for traffic control duties. Transgender individuals working as traffic assistants are delivering good results, Mr. Anand said, adding that a report has been submitted to the government. 'More appointments will be made in the traffic department and the government is also preparing to fill vacancies in other departments,' assured the Commissioner. Mr. Anand said preparations for the monsoon season are in progress, with coordination between the police, GHMC and HYDRA. He also mentioned that the disturbance caused by private travel buses is high, and a meeting will be held soon with their managements to take appropriate action. The meeting was attended by all the ACPs, Additional DCPs, Inspectors and SIs from traffic stations, along with Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis, DCP Traffic-I B.K. Rahul Hegde, DCP Traffic-II Ashok Kumar and DCP Traffic-III R. Venkateswarlu.

Tirupati autos get smart IDs to boost passenger safety
Tirupati: Towards enhancing passenger safety and bringing transparency to public transport, the Tirupati police have launched digital numbering system for autorickshaws in the city. This initiative, which integrates advanced technology into daily commuting, allows passengers to access complete details of the autorickshaw, its driver, and its owner, thereby ensuring a safer and more reliable travel experience. The system was formally unveiled by Superintendent of Police V Harshavardhan Raju, during a programme on Monday. As part of the initiative, every registered autorickshaw will be provided with an A4-size display card and two stickers embedded with QR codes. These QR codes, when scanned using Google Lens, will provide instant access to the driver's full profile, the vehicle's details, and contact information of the nearest police stations and officers. Passengers can scan the QR code at the beginning of their journey to view the driver's credentials and take a photo of it for personal records. They can also share the QR details with family members via WhatsApp for added safety. In emergency situations, commuters have the option to share their live location with the police control room, allowing for quick intervention. The system also features a feedback option where passengers can rate the driver's behaviour or file complaints in case of misconduct or lost items. According to the SP, the QR code will display multiple options once scanned, including the ability to print out the driver and vehicle information. The feature ensures that passengers know exactly which vehicle they are traveling in and can trace it easily if needed. This system not only boosts public confidence but also strengthens law enforcement's ability to regulate and respond swiftly to any incidents involving autos. To obtain the digital number and associated QR stickers, auto owners and drivers are required to submit full details of their vehicle, along with copies of their Aadhaar card, driving license, and passport-size photographs to the traffic police. These details are uploaded to a specialized police website, and the generated QR code is issued with a unique digital number. This initiative is expected to play a key role in crime prevention, traffic regulation, and emergency response. Additional SPs K Ravi Manoharachari and Nagabhushana Rao, DSPs Ramakrishna Chari, Syam Sundar, Bhaktavatsalam, Chandrasekhar, along with other traffic personnel attended the programme.

Auto digitalisation takes passenger safety to the next rung, says SP
The Tirupati district police on Monday launched the 'auto digitalisation' project that would bring thousands of auto-rickshaws operating in the district under the eye of the department. The project aims to ensure safety of the passengers as well as reduce criminal activities. Superintendent of Police V.
