Discards redesigned for charity auction

The "Retooled" auction, hosted by the Red Cross, featured works from Otago Polytechnic school of design students. The students had about a month to prepare for the auction, and the only stipulation was the final product needed to use material sourced from the Red Cross. At least 28 separate items were auctioned while another 24 went on sale. Steve King, of the Red Cross, said it was an opportunity for students to showcase creative flair, as well as find some use for previously discarded items. "I think it's great to see what can be done with items that you would think are at the end of their life. So with a bit of thought and skill, you know, some really, really good quality items can be created." Remaking old clothes proved popular among students this year, he said. "The standard of some of the dressmaking was really high and really, really creative, especially the design component. "There was a really lovely jacket and, some really nice garments, dresses, tops." One of the items up for auction was a papier mache torso, fashioned from old newspapers and music books from the basement of the Red Cross building. Artist Emily Gilbert, 19, said it took about a month to make. "It was pretty hard work, because it's made of fabric and glue, so getting some of the shaping was quite difficult and time consuming. She said she was inspired by Greek art and design and also wanted to celebrate the music of composers such as Chopin. "We managed to transform discarded remnants into something human. "I feel like I've gained some skills in how to work with my hands a bit more, and I like doing research into the old paintings and old sculptures." She "purchased" the item for her grandmother, who was "really interested" in her work. Mr King said the auction raised about $1700 for the Red Cross. "It's definitely something we would do again. It's a big project for the students. I think the youth engagement and the collaborative aspect of it is as important as the fundraising."

Pic credit: Tom Tuite Gardai await confirmation that a former Ukrainian soldier who sparked a security alert at the US ambassador to Ireland's official residence in Dublin has left the country, a court has heard. Oleksandr Kucherenko, 33, claimed to be sight-seeing on June 13 after "wandering" into the grounds and scaling the walled moat and perimeter of the Deerfields residence in Phoenix Park. He pleaded guilty the following day at Dublin District Court to trespassing in a manner likely to place another person in fear. Judge Michele Finan had ordered him to donate to the Red Cross and adjourned his case, with bail and a daily signing on condition. Kucherenko, of no fixed address, had claimed he could give €50 to the humanitarian charity. Otherwise, Judge Finan said she would convict and fine him €200 if he had left the State. She noted yesterday/today that Gardai still had to confirm whether he had gone and was continuing their enquiries. He consented to a two-week adjournment of Kucherenko's case, which will resume on July 4. At his earlier hearing, Garda Martin Curley said the accused's reply to the charge was, "My behaviour would not have scared anyone; I was not drunk". He had arrived in the country hours before his arrest but intends to leave as soon as possible. A victim impact statement was not required. The court heard the Ukrainian national tripped the perimeter alarm at 3.30pm. Garda Curley said, "The accused crossed a moat and climbed an eight-foot wall into the property." Security personnel detained the former soldier minutes later. Defence barrister Kevin McCrave, instructed by Mr O'Connor, said Mr Kucherenko had been in the Ukrainian army and came to Ireland to visit friends in Claremorris, Co Mayo. He did not address the court but briefed his barrister that he had "just landed, was sight-seeing and taking photographs around the city". Counsel said the man "ended up in Phoenix Park and wandered into the grounds inadvertently", and he was apologetic. The court heard his father also served in the military and was killed in action in the war against Russia, which led to the accused being allowed to leave the army. He hoped to join other family members in Spain. The judge had ordered the accused, who was to stay in hostel accommodation, to sign on daily at a garda station, stay away from the ambassador's residence and have no direct or indirect contact with any of the occupants or by social media. Legal aid was granted.

East San Jose house fire spreads to neighboring home, 3 displaced
Three people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire broke out at an East San Jose neighborhood Thursday afternoon, firefighters said. Around 12:10 p.m., firefighters were called to a home on the 3300 block of Onslow Way. According to the fire department, the fire began as an outside cooking fire with a propane issue, which spread to the house, garage and attic. 1/2 #SJFD firefighters are on scene of a second alarm assignment for a fire at a single-story residential structure on the 3300 block of Onslow Way. Firefighter were able to control the fire by 12:45 p.m. There were no reports of injuries. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist three adults who were replaced from the primary structure. Thursday's fire took place less than a mile from where the Ranch Place Fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. The fire, which prompted evacuation orders, burned more than 90 acres before it was contained Wednesday morning.

ICRC says 'hospitals must be respected' after Iran strike on Israel
The International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday that "hospitals must be respected" after a hospital in southern Israel was hit during an Iranian missile attack on day seven of the war. "Under international humanitarian law, the wounded and sick, medical personnel and hospitals must be respected and protected," the ICRC said on X after the Soroka Hospital in Beersheba was hit. AFP
