Two youths killed, three injured in highway accident near Mangaluru
Mangaluru: Two youths, including a local National Students' Union of India (NSUI) leader, were killed and three others injured when a car they were travelling in rammed a road divider on National Highway 66, near Jeppinamogaru, late Tuesday night. The deceased have been identified as Om Shri, associated with the NSUI, and Aman Rao, a resident of Kadri in Mangaluru.
According to police sources, the car was reportedly speeding when the driver lost control and hit the divider. The group was travelling from Talapady to Mangaluru. Two other occupants—Vamshi and Ashiq—sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment in the ICU at a city hospital. Another passenger, Jerry, said to be of Italian origin, escaped with minor injuries. Both deceased individuals were known to be affiliated with the Congress party.

Political row erupts in Rajasthan over student leader's arrest at university
JAIPUR The arrest of former Rajasthan University Students' Union president Nirmal Chaudhary on the university campus during an examination on Saturday has triggered a political row in the State .Mr. Chaudhary, who was reportedly detained by plainclothes police while appearing for an exam, was later formally arrested in connection with a 2022 criminal case. The charges against him include unlawful assembly, blocking a road, obstructing government work, misbehaving with a senior police officer, and damaging public property during a protest. 'The Bharatiya Janata Party government first did not even listen to Dr. Bishnoi's family, and when these public representatives joined their protest seeking justice, they were implicated in the criminal case,' the Congress leader posted on X. Mr. Chaudhary won the student union election as an Independent in 2022 during the Congress regime. State Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra, Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully, and former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot condemned the police action. Mr. Jully said such actions 'reek of dictatorial tendencies', while Mr. Pilot accused the BJP government of targeting Opposition voices. Patil writes to CM on mining scams, BJP questions timing
Bengaluru/Raichur: Law minister HK Patil has written a detailed letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah expressing deep concern over the govt's failure to act on thousands of illegal mining cases that allegedly led to a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore between 2007 and 2011. In a seven-page letter dated June 18, Patil criticised the "administrative apathy" in handling these cases and called for stern action against the culprits and recovery of lost public wealth. He reminded Siddaramaiah of the 320-km foot march to Ballari in 2010 against illegal mining when the Congress was in opposition. Patil, who headed the cabinet sub-committee on illegal mining during Siddaramaiah's previous term (2013–18), noted in the letter that only 7.6% of more than 12,000 registered illegal mining cases have been investigated so far. "In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion," he further added. In Raichur, Patil on Saturday said, "I have brought it to the notice of the CM about what has to be done. The letter is written in the interest of the state and its people. The chief minister has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously." 1 2 Berhampur: A five-member all-women Congress fact-finding team on Saturday visited Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district, where a 20-year-old college student was allegedly gang-raped by 10 men, including four juveniles, on June 15. The team, led by AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, visited the crime scene and interacted with locals about the state of police patrolling. The delegation also held discussions with SP (Berhampur), Saravana Vivek M. Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan, a team member, condemned the incident. "The area lacks adequate lighting and police presence despite being a major tourist spot," the MP said. The team, which includes MPs Praniti Shinde, S Jothimani and former spokesperson Shobha Oza, will tour other areas in the state over the next three days to document incidents of violence against women. "We will submit our findings to the AICC and also meet President Droupadi Murmu," Ranjan added. She alleged the state govt failed to take women's safety seriously, citing the suspension of Congress MLAs from the assembly after they demanded a debate and committee on the matter. "At least three gang-rape cases have been reported in just a week," she added.
