Drones to the rescue: Pilot project to deliver medicines to rural Sabah

TAWAU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has unveiled a pilot project to deliver medicines using drones at the Sabah Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, held at the Tawau Municipal Council Square.
The drone was one of the main attractions at the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) booth, as a high-impact initiative for the community, especially in remote areas.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the closing of Sabah PMR 2025 today, also visited the Nadi booth and observed the drone in action.
In a statement today, MCMC's Corporate Communications division said that the initiative to deliver medicines to Nadi centres using drones would be carried out with the Health Ministry as the main partner, alongside strategic partners such as MRANTI and local drone technology providers.
"This initiative is a pilot project to demonstrate the effectiveness of delivering medicines to rural and remote areas from health clinics to selected Nadi centres."
"It also aims to speed up access to medication for communities in hard-to-reach areas, including islands, remote villages, and locations without proper road infrastructure," the statement said.
The first phase of the drone medicine delivery project, involving two Nadi centres, is expected to be implemented in the fourth quarter of 2025.
"This project supports the government's initiative to expand access to future healthcare services that are more equitable and high-quality for rural communities through technology, in line with advancements and the availability of 5G and artificial intelligence (AI)," it added.
According to MCMC, the project will be expanded to 150 Nadi centres in 2026 and eventually to 392 centres by 2027.
At the Sabah PMR programme, the Nadi booth featured various smart services covering five key areas: entrepreneurship, healthcare, lifelong learning, IT awareness, and government services. – BERNAMA

Meanwhile, the meeting also discussed the implementation of GovTech Malaysia, including the MyGOV Malaysia application, which functions as the government's single digital gateway. 'Through the gateway, the rakyat can deal with various government agencies online without having to queue at the counter. 'This demonstrates the government's commitment to bring services closer to the people in a simple, efficient and transparent manner,' he said. In the same meeting, Anwar also stressed the importance of expanding the implementation of MyDigital ID to the private sector. 'We must ensure a secure, comprehensive and trusted digital ecosystem not only for government services, but also for every aspect of daily life and future business activities,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended financial assistance to a small-time hawker in Kuantan, Pahang, Mohd Zaki Che Ibrahim, 45, who has been struggling to repair his dilapidated home and care for his family, including a wife battling a chronic illness. The donation was presented by the Prime Minister's Political Secretary, Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, during a visit to the couple and their 18-year-old son under the Ziarah MADANI outreach programme. 'Every morning, Mohd Zaki sells breakfast at his small stall to support his family. 'Despite his wife's unstable health condition due to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), they persevere to keep the kitchen running and provide for their son,' Ahmad Farhan wrote in a Facebook post, which was also shared by the Prime Minister. According to Ahmad Farhan, the family's home is in poor condition, with a leaking roof, broken floor and cracked walls, adding to the daily challenges they face. 'As part of the Ziarah MADANI initiative, I came on behalf of the Prime Minister to deliver aid and assess what forms of assistance should be expedited to help this family live in safer and more comfortable conditions,' he said.
