Edisi Siasat blocked on Telegram, returns as 'Edisi Siasat 2.0' within hours
KUALA LUMPUR: The Telegram channel Edisi Siasat, which has been publishing crime-related content, was blocked in Malaysia last night. The channel, with 1.8 million followers, was blocked after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it had obtained an interim injunction to prevent the republication of content from it and another channel, Edisi Khas. However, another channel, Edisi Siasat 2.0, was created last night, producing content similar to Edisi Siasat. The New Straits Times has reached out to MCMC for comment. Yesterday, MCMC said the two channels had published content in breach of the Communications and Multimedia Act. It said the injunction was a last resort to stop the spread of harmful content and to prevent the republication of similar material. The commission added that this is the first action of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, specifically because Telegram holds a Class Application Service Provider (ASP(C)) licence. The move follows Telegram's repeated failure to address content that has been reported to the platform numerous times, despite various negotiation efforts and cooperation extended by MCMC.

‘Edisi Siasat' clone channels appear on Telegram after original group blocked in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — The Telegram channel 'Edisi Siasat,' which featured information related to alleged misconduct by authorities, has been inaccessible to users of the platform since this afternoon. A Bernama check on the channel found a message displayed stating, 'Doesn't exist, this channel cannot be displayed as it goes against Malaysian law.' It was also observed that all content had been deleted, believed to be blocked by the authorities. However, at 8 pm tonight, Bernama's check on the platform found a new account using the name 'Edisi Siasat 2.0,' believed to have been created by the same administrator. As of now, this new account has more than 2,000 followers. Earlier, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) filed civil action against two channels on the Telegram platform, namely 'Edisi Siasat' and 'Edisi Khas.' MCMC stated today that this action is the first of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, especially since Telegram is an Application Service Provider (Class) [ASP(C)] license holder. 'This follows Telegram's alleged failure to address content that has been repeatedly reported to them, despite various negotiations and cooperation efforts made by MCMC,' the statement said. Both channels were identified as disseminating content that violates provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which has the potential to erode public trust in public institutions and disrupt social order. — Bernama

Both sides back MCA's Wong
PETALING JAYA: Youth wings from across the political spectrum have come out in support of Pahang MCA Youth chief Wong Siew Mun, who is under police investigation over her recent remarks on the government's mobile phone data collection initiative. The leaders criticised the investigation as an overreach, saying that Wong was merely raising legitimate concerns relating to public interest. Shared concerns: (From left) Bastien, Hafiz, Faiz and Neow have defended Wong. Barisan Nasional Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin expressed shock that Wong was summoned to Bukit Aman, noting that the government has pledged to uphold freedom of speech. Hafiz said Wong was simply questioning the move to instruct telcos to provide anonymised mobile data to the government. 'This isn't a political issue. It concerns the privacy of Malaysians. As a political activist, she has every right to raise it,' he said. Barisan Youth communications director Neow Choo Seong echoed that sentiment, urging the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to re-evaluate their approach to handling such matters. He argued that instead of suppressing dissent, authorities should allow open dialogue and be accepting of differing views. 'We must tolerate differing views and prioritise the people's issues. That's the essence of real reform,' said Neow, who is also MCA Youth information chief. Segamat Umno deputy chief Datuk Bastien Onn said that if Wong is simply voicing grassroots concerns, the authorities should not pursue further action against her. 'It's within the norm of freedom of speech, where it is incumbent on every politician to speak up for the people,' he said. 'The issue is, how will the police handle this without making the other person feel oppressed?' Bersatu Youth vice-chief Faiz Rahmad also defended Wong, saying her remarks were based on publicly available information, including international news reports and government statements. Wong had her statement recorded at Bukit Aman on Wednesday. She is being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, for allegedly causing public alarm and misusing network facilities. Earlier this month, MCMC clarified that the Mobile Phone Data collection initiative only involves eight types of anonymised data from network providers, and does not include personally identifiable details such as names, IC numbers or phone numbers. Instead, the data types included are the Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number, unique ID, mobile country code and GPS coordinates of telco towers, among others. However, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has called for the initiative to be halted, warning that it could erode public trust and lead to abuse. Dr Wee also questioned the effectiveness of anonymisation, arguing that with advanced technologies, sensitive personal information could still be revealed.

Telegram complies with court order, ‘Edisi Siasat' blocked
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had filed a civil suit against Telegram and two of its channels. (Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : Online messaging platform Telegram has complied with a High Court order to stop the spread of offensive material by purported whistleblower channel 'Edisi Siasat'. Checks on Telegram showed that Edisi Siasat has been blocked this evening, with users notified that the channel 'can't be displayed because it violated local laws'. FMT was made to understand that this was a result of Telegram complying with the interim injunction issued by the High Court. Edisi Siasat has, however, already set up a second channel on Telegram. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had filed a civil suit against Telegram and two of its channels for allegedly spreading harmful content that could erode trust in public institutions and threaten social order. The MCMC said Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas were found to have published content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Both Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas were anonymous Telegram channels known for publishing whistleblower-style allegations, particularly targeting public institutions and enforcement agencies. Despite being unofficial, their posts often gain traction and trigger public debates. The MCMC reminded social media platforms that they have a duty to ensure that the content on their platforms did not violate Malaysian laws, adding that it would not hesitate to take similar action against other providers.
