Oscar Pistorius' return to sport, a disrespect to Reeva Steenkamp's legacy

Oscar Pistorius' father Henke, has declined to comment on his son's participation in the Ironman 70.3 triathlon challenge in Durban last weekend.
Pistorius, who is out on parole for the Valentines Day murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, participated in the event that took place at Ushaka beach on Sunday, raising the ire of the United Democratic Movement Women's Organisation (UDEMWO).
UDEMWO condemned convicted murderer Pistorius' participation in the Ironman sporting event, labelling it a blatant insult to the memory of his deceased girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Henk's only response when contacted was that his son was capable of speaking for himself.
Sunday was Pistorius' first public appearance in sports since being granted parole in January 2024, following the murder of Steenkamp 12 years ago.
Reeva Steenkamp's mother June Steenkamp says she wants to live the rest of her life in peace and continue with her daughter's legacy.

Pistorius, widely recognised as the 'Blade Runner', completed the race, which consisted of swimming, cycling, and running, with a time of 5:56:39.
His return to the public sporting domain has triggered vehement reactions.
Thandi Nontenja, MP and UDEMWO secretary general, said the organisation was appalled to learn that Pistorius participated in the triathlon.
According to media reports, his attorney Conrad Dormehl confirmed the athlete's involvement as 'part of his rehabilitation', and Pistorius' parole officer allegedly approved his travel from Pretoria to Durban, she said.
Nontenja stated that this was unacceptable, and the fact that Pistorius was granted parole in the first place was a travesty of justice.
'His public return to sport as though nothing happened is a deep insult to the memory of Reeva Steenkamp and a painful reminder to her loved ones that her life was violently cut short. She will never again celebrate a birthday or milestone, while the man who ended her life enjoys the privilege of sport and public presence.
'This situation leaves a bitter taste for women in South Africa,' said Nontenja.
'In a country overwhelmed by gender-based violence and femicide, how can a convicted murderer be allowed to resume normal life so easily? How is it possible that a man who committed such a horrific crime against a woman is now participating in events alongside law-abiding citizens?' she asked.
According to Nontenja, this was a glaring indictment of South Africa's justice system.
She said the fact that Pistorius was free and engaging in leisure activities wass a 'slap in the face' to the Steenkamp family and to every survivor of gender-based violence.
'It shows just how poorly the country is doing in enforcing laws that are meant to protect women. Our parole system is failing the very people it is supposed to safeguard,' she said.
UDEMWO demanded that Pistorius not be allowed to live as though he were a free man while on parole. 'Public sporting events are for citizens who have not committed unspeakable crimes. We also demand a thorough investigation into the conduct of his parole officer,' said Nontenja.
She added that the organisation was equally concerned about the failure of the National Prosecuting Authority under the leadership of Advocate Shamila Batohi to prioritise and effectively prosecute gender-based violence cases.
She said UDEMWO remained committed to fighting for justice for all victims of gender-based violence.
'We will not be silent in the face of a justice system that continues to fail women in South Africa,' stated Nontenja.
Speaking after Pistorius was granted parole, Reeva's mother, June Steenkamp, said there could never be justice if your loved one was never coming back. 'No amount of time served will bring Reeva back… We, who remain behind, are the ones serving a life sentence.'
Asked what her reaction is to Pistorius returning to sport, June's lawyer, Tania Koen, said June's focus was on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation and continuing Reeva's legacy. 'What Oscar does is of no significance to her.'

After three rounds, the Toyota Gazoo GR Cup Challenge moves to its 'home' base at Zwartkops Raceway outside Pretoria for the fourth installment of the National Extreme Festival this weekend. It's been almost six weeks since we first set eyes on our new GR Yaris' with its slick eight-speed Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT) at the Aldo Scribante Circuit in Gqeberha, and I must say, I've missed being behind the wheel of the pink-liveried Independent Media and IOL car #60, affectionately dubbed Tinkerbell by the rest of the Media Challenge racers. Gazoo HQ Zwartkops is also the headquarters of Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa (TGRSA) which brings with it the added pressure of performing in front of some of their executives, VIP guests, friends and family. As we head into the weekend I'm a lot less nervous than I was at the beginning of the season. Our race craft has improved significantly but you're still behind the wheel of a race car alongside 19 other GR Corollas driven by dealers and GR 86s piloted by GR Academy drivers so anything can happen, especially since most of us call Zwartkops our home circuit. There's a difference though between driving around the track at a launch with an instructor next to you as opposed to donning a race suit and then going hell for leather and side by side in a race.

Image: Armand Hough / Independent Media One of the Western Cape's most wanted suspects, Vuyolwethu Tshukela, also known by the alias 'Yesu', made his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Tuesday following his arrest in the Free State on Friday. Tshukela, 38, who had been sought in connection with a series of violent taxi-related crimes in Cape Town, was apprehended in Welkom after months on the run. He now faces a raft of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, arson, and extortion. Next Stay Close ✕ According to Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie, Tshukela had been positively linked to at least four taxi-related murders committed in Philippi East, Nyanga, and Delft between August and September 2024. 'Western Cape police had issued media releases appealing for information on the whereabouts of Mthatha-born Vuyolwethu Tshukela, aka 'Yesu',' said police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa. 'He was subsequently apprehended in Welkom and is currently facing charges linked to murder and extortion cases as well as an arson investigation that were all committed in the Nyanga area and relate to the taxi industry.' Image: Armand Hough / Independent Media However, in court on Tuesday, Tshukela was formally charged with only one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and two counts of extortion. During his brief court appearance, the State outlined a disturbing pattern of violence allegedly linked to protection rackets in the taxi industry. The court heard that on August 18, 2024, during a meeting of taxi drivers at a rank, Tshukela allegedly approached the group and fatally shot one of the drivers in front of multiple eyewitnesses. About 16 taxis were set alight at the Nyanga taxi rank in February. Image: Ayanda Ndamane / Independent Media According to the State, the deceased had previously refused to pay extortion money. The State also detailed a separate incident on September 17, 2024, where Tshukela allegedly demanded payments from drivers and threatened that those who did not comply would be shot. While some made payments, the complainant in the matter reportedly refused. On the charge of attempted murder, the State alleges that on February 9, 2025, a group of four people – including Tshukela – set fire to containers and taxis at the Nyanga taxi rank. When taxi patrollers gave chase, the group fled into a nearby street, where Tshukela allegedly opened fire on them. The patrollers escaped and ran to the police station, later positively identifying Tshukela as one of the shooters. The State prosecutor told the court that the matter falls under Schedule 6 offences, which means the accused must show exceptional circumstances to be granted bail. The State indicated it would oppose any bail application. 'This is a Schedule 6 matter,' said the prosecutor. 'The accused is before the court for a charge of murder, two charges of extortion, and one charge of attempted murder.' The court postponed the case to June 24 so that Tshukela's private lawyer could be present and further bail-related information could be recorded. Meanwhile, police say additional charges may be added as investigations continue. 'As investigations unfold, the suspect could face additional charges,' said Brigadier Potelwa.
