'I tried the UK's new high-tech £200million trains with underfloor heating'

It's not every day that the country gets a new train. Let alone 36 of them.
Happily, Monday was one of those days.
On June 9, the first of 36 Class 730/2 Northwestern Railway trains opened doors to passengers for the first time. I was lucky enough to be on the test train on Friday, when it trundled out of London Euston stations, making its way roughly half an hour to Milton Keynes, where it promptly turned back around.
For those who need a little more to get their blood pumping than a ride from a classic domitary settlement on a spotless commuter train, there was entertainment. Sequin jacket-wearing performers belted out tunes that might've been from The Greatest Showman, while viral pudding brand Humble Crumble served up little cardboard bowls of their sweet treat.
Merlin Entertainment was onboard, hiding free tickets to its attractions up in the freshly polished, see-through luggage racks (designed to make spotting bags/freebies easier) and beneath the tidily upholstered chairs.
For those with a deeper appreciation of a good train, then Great Northwestern delivered some tantalizing figures.
The 730 Class consists of 84 trains and 324 carriages. An average three-carriage train has 199 seats, while the five-carry configuration takes 406.
For the 36 Class 730/2 trains specifically, north of £200million has been splashed out.
It will run on Cross City Line routes from Lichfield to Birmingham and Redditch, linking Walsall and Wolverhampton and Rugeley to Birmingham International. At its fastest, the train rattles along at 90 mph, powered by electric engines.
London Northwestern has tweaked the classic train design a little to give the impression of more space. The gangways have been left open, giving a "more spacious feel", while extra room has been allocated to bike storage - although "up to three" bikes will do little more than remind cyclists of how far we have fallen since the giddy days of bike-carriages on UK trains. For that kind of considerate fun, your best bet is heading to France, Italy or the Netherlands.
Each seat has a plug and USB socket. While this is to be expected on a new train, it is still good news—so long as they actually work and don't cause your phone to glitch out, as is often the case.
London Northwestern's overall investment in new trains and infrastructure (which totals three new train fleets and lots of depot upgrades) is £1billion.
So what will commuters make of it?
While it might not be blow anyone's mind or cause Michael Portillo to dust off his presenting boots, it is a solid train. The 730/2 does not fall into any of the classic traps. Its seats are comfortable and well upholstered (more than can be said for the likes of GWR) and its aisles are well proportioned (something Greater Anglia finds incredibly difficult for some reason).
There's enough space in the seats and communal areas to give you a bit of breathing space during the morning commute, and the toilets don't talk to you, unlike the psychotic Virgin trains that used to serve this part of the country.
All in all, a well-executed train. Would ride again.

ITV halt live Royal Ascot coverage to announce tragic news

Just minutes into the broadcast from the fourth day of the meet, presenter Ed Chamberlin informed viewers that legendary racehorse trainer Kevin Prendergast had died at the age of 92. The Irishman trained over 2,000 winners over the course of his glittering career - which spanned six decades - but he sadly passed away just a few weeks short of his 93rd birthday. He was the son of the legendary Paddy 'Darkie' Prendergast and started out as an amateur jockey before taking out a trainer's licence in 1963. Prendergast would go on to win nine Classics in his career, with eight of those victories coming in Ireland. His sole English Classic win came when Nebbiolo triumphed at the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas in 1977. Meanwhile, his last winner in any race came last August, when Copie Conforme, ridden by Chris Hayes, won at Bellewstown. Announcing the news moments into Friday afternoon's coverage, Chamberlin told viewers: "There was some sad news earlier today, the news that the Irish trainer Kevin Prendergast has died at the age of 92. "A trainer that had over 2,000 winners, he won four races here at Royal Ascot and nine Classics in total, including Nebbiolo in the 1977 2000 Guineas. "He really was a great trainer and an even better man." Chamberlin then handed over to former jockey Ruby Walsh to give his thoughts on the tragic news, asking him: "Ruby, would it be fair to describe him as a trailblazer in the training ranks?" "Oh, he most certainly was, Ed," replied Walsh. "He followed in the footsteps of his father Darkie and he trained for long enough to compete against the great Vincent O'Brien and Aidan O'Brien. "So he was a trailblazer, his horses always looked impeccable, he was a brilliant racehorse trainer, he was a legend of the sport, but he was a massive character and he will be sadly missed." A statement from ITV Racing read: "Everyone at ITV Racing is sad to hear the passing of legendary trainer Kevin Prendergast aged 92. "Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time."

There's no need for batteries, as they charge up via USB, so you never need to worry about them cutting out whilst out and about. The battery life of them allows for between three and eight hours of continuous use depending on which speed setting you choose. I was worried they'd be super loud and obnoxious to use, but they're incredibly quiet even when at full speed, so you can use them on planes and trains or in public without feeling self conscious. Although the Warmco Mini Portable Handheld Fan is perfect for keeping cool during the summer heat, I also found a great use for it year round; drying your makeup setting spray. Once you've spritzed it on, simply turn the fan on and use it to dry down the setting spray without frantically fanning your hands up and down. It's also handy for helping things like lash glue or fake tan to dry down more quickly. If you prefer a bladeless model, this Wendry Portable Handheld Cooling Bladeless Fan is £12.49 with three speed settings and a stand to turn it into a desk fan. For something even more tiny, Dunelm's Status Dual Position Handheld Folding Fan measures just three inches and folds up into two standing positions, costing just £3. However I'm not the only one who loves the Warmco Mini Portable Handheld Fan. Other Amazon reviews say: 'Great little fans, not too big, quiet and charge relatively quickly and seem to be lasting well. Stand is a handy plus and seem to be decent quality.' Another agreed: 'Handy portable and desk fan with different speed settings. Only just had them so cannot yet verify about recharging them. Good value for money and seem quite sturdy, they are also reasonably quiet too so handy for travelling.' Some found some issues, writing: 'These fans are a great size and provide a nice bit of cool air on a hot day. But the power button turns on too easily. Every time I opened my backpack, the fan was on, cooling the inside of my bag. The button needs to be reconfigured so it can't do that.' However other reviewers loved them, saying: 'Shocked at how good these two are. Very powerful! Great for the price. Would recommend! Bought for holidays. The stand is great to put it on table at the restaurant.'
