Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory
KOLKATA: Breaking the syndicates dealing with illegal immigration by identifying the gang heads and double-checking all received ID documents from the source to examine their authenticity were the two reasons behind the changes introduced in passport verification, said Kolkata Police commissioner
Manoj Verma
on Thursday, stressing the aim was to ensure illegal immigrants could not stay on.
"We have re-evaluated the passport verification system. Our primary target is to identify syndicate members and individuals involved in such illegal activities. Wherever documents are getting used, we are scrutinising and verifying them right back to their source," Verma. "The accused at times use different addresses for different cases. We are cross-checking Aadhaar addresses with other ID documents." Verma was speaking to reporters after planting saplings at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines on World Environment Day on Thursday.
He urged citizens to plant at least 10 trees as a "contribution to society".
Going back to passport verification, Verma pointed out that no new passport would be issued nor any old one renewed without an address visit. Even cops asking passport applicants to visit police stations would face action, Verma said. The SOP says all documents of a passport applicant will be uploaded on the portal to root out discrepancy. Applicants can monitor document verification status through a link provided by police.

Ex-comp operator, bro arrested for siphoning off Rs 3cr from municipality's Swachh Bharat funds
1 2 Lucknow: Rae Bareli police on Saturday arrested a former computer operator of Rae Bareli nagar palika parishad (municipal board) and his brother for siphoning off Rs 3.17 crore from govt accounts meant for the Swachh Bharat mission . The accused, Vikram Sharma, was arrested along with his brother Jaswant Sharma from Shahjahanpur. Police said Vikram, a resident of Shahjahanpur, had been appointed as a computer operator in Rae Bareli nagar palika in 2022. During his tenure, he illegally accessed digital signatures and confidential credentials of senior municipal officials. He then used this sensitive data, along with Aadhaar numbers, to transfer Rs 3.17 crore from municipal accounts to private bank accounts in Sitapur and Lucknow in the name of bogus firms. The embezzled funds were routed into three separate transactions — Rs 98.65 lakh and Rs 99.56 lakh into the accounts of a firm named Anekta Mein Ekta Kranti Manch, and Rs 1.2 crore into New Royal Enterprises. None of these firms had any contractual association with the nagar palika, officials said. Police investigations revealed that Rs 1.98 crore was sent to a Bank of India account in Sitapur, and ₹1.2 crore to an ICICI Bank account in Lucknow, from which Rs 15 lakh was withdrawn in two instalments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo Following the suspicious transactions, the nagar palika administration conducted an internal inquiry and registered an FIR on Oct 25, 2023, at Kotwali police station, based on a complaint by executive officer Swarn Singh. Rae Bareli additional SP Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, who supervised the probe, said that Vikram, who had earlier been jailed in a related data breach case, resumed fraudulent activities upon release, with help from his brother. After the arrests, police succeeded in retrieving and redirecting the embezzled amount back to the nagar palika's accounts through coordination with the banks concerned.

Saiyed family buried together on 9th day of tragedy
Ahmedabad: Hundreds from the Khanpur neighbourhood in the walled city joined the Saiyed family on Saturday afternoon to bid a final farewell to four of its members. They parted with the family on June 12 on their journey to England, promising to meet again for another festival celebration. The Saiyed family came to India from England and was returning with their daughter after celebrating the festival of Eid-ul-Adha with family members. All four — Inayat Ali Saiyed, his wife Nafeesabanu, daughter Taskin, and son Vaqi Ali — became victims of a tragic plane crash a couple of hours after family members in Ahmedabad went to the airport for a sendoff. The Saiyed family, consisting of six brothers who live together in one building in the Khanpur area, waited for nine days before all of them were identified after the DNA match, allowing them to bury their dear ones. Inayat's eldest brother, Badesaab Saiyed, said that three bodies were identified two days ago, but Nafeesabanu's DNA matched on Saturday. "It was a feeling of our family members that we should bury all four members together, and therefore we waited for two more days," he said after returning from the burial at the Musa Suhag graveyard. Inayat and his wife lived in Wembley for 19 years. Their son, Vaqi, shifted to England a few years ago after completing his schooling. Taskin joined her parents in the UK to begin a new chapter in her life. She completed her MBBS from the NHL Medical College in Ahmedabad. Her uncle said that she cleared the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam conducted by the General Medical Council and became eligible to practice medicine in England. "She planned to pursue her postgraduation in the UK only. But she was supposed to join a hospital as a doctor there after 15 days. That is why she joined her parents," he said.
