Lukanisman: Lawas Hospital, Petra Jaya Hospital slated for 2026 completion

MIRI (May 5): The new 76-bed Lawas Hospital project is expected to be ready by 2026, said federal Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.
Speaking at the Miri Melanau Association's (PMM) 'Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri' here, he expressed his hopes the facility would ease the long-standing strain on medical infrastructure in Sarawak's northern region.
He also said the long-delayed Petra Jaya Hospital in Kuching was now on track for completion next year.
'These projects reflect our commitment to decentralising healthcare, and ensuring underserved communities—especially in rural areas—have access to essential services,' he said.
Lukanisman added the ministry was monitoring the potential implications of the tariff measures recently announced by US President Donald Trump, which could impact Malaysia's pharmaceutical and clinical device imports.
He said a special parliamentary session convened today to address the issue.
On the education front, he said the Sarawak government's plan to implement the Free Tertiary Education Scheme in 2026 was a testament to Sarawak's commitment to education and the future of its youth, particularly those from low or middle-income households.
The scheme covers degree programmes at select local institutions focusing on courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Law, Medicine, Accounting and Finance.

'Eligible students will be required to complete a one-year government-funded foundation programme before proceeding to their degree.
'Those from households earning RM1,500 per capita or less will also receive a RM15,000 annual living stipend and RM1,200 in pocket money via the S Pay Global digital platform,' he said.
Lukanisman also voiced his support for a proposal to establish a cultural centre for PMM, expressing hope that funding could be secured through the state government.
A formal proposal was recently submitted to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Towards this end, Lukanisman pledged RM10,000 from his constituency fund and an additional RM10,000 in his capacity as Deputy Health Minister.
The event also saw contributions from Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, who announced RM10,000 in support of PMM's activities, along with RM120,000 allocated under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

GoBald 2025 raises over RM450,000 in support of children with cancer

KUCHING (June 22): The 17th edition of GoBald, Sarawak's largest head-shaving fundraiser, has raised more than RM450,000 from over 1,500 donors across Malaysia. As of June 2025, over 180 individuals have registered for the campaign, with at least 164 pledging to shave their heads, including participants from various states and federal territories. Since its launch in 2009, GoBald has raised over RM13 million with the support of more than 11,000 participants nationwide. Organised annually by the Sarawak Children's Cancer Society (SCCS), this year's campaign coincided with Cancer Survivors Month. In Kuching alone, over RM325,000 was raised, with 95 participants shaving their heads at AEON Mall Kuching Central or at local salon partners. SCCS President Mary Kiu highlighted that nearly RM500,000 was spent this year on medical treatment for just one child, underscoring the growing needs of families supported by the organisation. 'Whether you're shaving your head, donating, volunteering, or simply showing up to support – you're making a difference,' she said. 'To those of you who are joining us for the very first time – welcome! And to those who have never heard of GoBald, I just want to say that it's more than just shaving your hair. 'It's a bold statement of love, solidarity, and support for children who are going through cancer treatment – many of whom lose their hair as a result. By going bald, we show them they are not alone, and we stand with them in their fight. 'It is through initiatives like GoBald that have enabled SCCS to support over 1,700 families since our establishment in 2001,' she added. Among the participants for the first shave was 16-year-old Daniel Kueh, who was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (T-ALL) in 2023 at just 14. Kueh took part in the first shave alongside five family members – his parents, brother, aunt, and grandaunt. In 2024, SCCS supported Kueh's treatment costs, including over RM130,000 for a stem cell transplant and lab tests at both Sarawak General Hospital and Ampang Hospital. His case contributed to SCCS's total medical aid expenses of over RM762,000 for the year. Kueh's family has been passionate advocates for SCCS ever since, actively participating in awareness and fundraising efforts. 'When I had cancer, SCCS helped sponsor part of my treatment through GoBald, and that support meant so much to me. Now, I want to go bald too — to help other kids going through cancer so they can continue their chemotherapy and treatment,' shared Kueh. Three representatives from Ibraco Berhad, the main sponsor of GoBald 2025, were the second batch of shavees after Kueh and his family. As the signature awareness and fundraising campaign for SCCS, all donations raised from GoBald contribute about 20 to 30 per cent of SCCS's total expenditure over RM2 million every year. Among the essential support services provided by SCCS are medical and financial aid to families in need; accommodation, food, and transportation for rural families under active treatment at its Kuching Halfway Home; organising counselling sessions and recreational activities; sponsoring medical equipment not provided in government hospitals; and providing care packs and tokens of love to help new patients adapt to life in the ward. Bekenu Open Air Market to be transformed into Wellness Hub Sibuti

MIRI (June 21): The Open Air Market in Bekenu is set for a major transformation, as the building undergoes upgrading works to become the new Wellness Hub Sibuti, a flagship community health initiative by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). The project, which began on June 5, involves extensive repair and renovation works costing RM977,804, and is expected to be completed within 24 weeks, by Nov 20 this year. Once completed, the facility will provide integrated and comprehensive health and wellness services to the local community, read a press statement by the Miri Divisional Health Office today. This initiative aligns with MOH's shift from a traditional 'Sick Care' approach to a proactive 'Health Care' mode, aimed at empowering individuals to take ownership of their health, as well as that of their families and communities. The initiative also supports Thrust 2 of the National Agenda for a Healthy Malaysia (ANMS), focusing on the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and high cholesterol. The upgraded facility will be equipped with modern and eco-friendly features, including consultation rooms, a multimedia studio, meeting rooms, a wellness studio, gymnasium, gallery space, and administrative offices. Services to be offered include health risk assessments, stop-smoking programmes, weight management through the IFitEr (I Fit and Eat Right) programme, lifestyle counselling, and health education. The hub is designed to cater to a wide segment of the community, including teenagers, housewives, senior citizens, and the working population, promoting behavioural changes toward healthier living through skill-building and community engagement. RM200,000 allocated under RTP 2026 for further upgrades at Kota Sentosa Hospital

KUCHING (June 21): An allocation of RM200,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2026 grant has been disbursed for further upgrading works on Kota Sentosa Hospital. This was announced by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap at a recent ceremony held to mark the completion of an earlier RTP project worth RM400,000 at the hospital. 'This project may seem modest in scale, but its impact has been truly significant, addressing two critical needs of the hospital that have long required urgent attention,' he said. The completed project involved the construction of 40 new carpark spots complete with earthworks, bitumen-surfacing, carpark line painting, and drainage works, resolving a long-standing parking shortage for staff and visitors. Additionally, the occupational therapy and rehabilitation hall was comprehensively upgraded with full electrical rewiring, 11 new split-unit air-conditioners, new windows, a renovated stage and backdrop, a brick wall partition for an office and counselling room, and repainting throughout the facility. 'These improvements have created a more conducive, safe, and comfortable environment for both staff and patients,' added Yap. The assemblyman also expressed appreciation to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), the implementing agency, for completing the project on time and in accordance with the set specifications. 'As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, I remain deeply committed to fighting for more funding to ensure that our public health facilities are not left behind,' he said.
