Intel appoints engineering hires as part of CEO Tan's turnaround strategy

hired three chip industry executives in engineering and networking roles on Wednesday, as part of CEO
Lip-Bu Tan
's plans to overhaul top management and turn around the embattled chipmaker.
Tan's plans include trimming the company's large workforce, hiring new leadership, focusing on customer satisfaction and ensuring the foundry business succeeds.
Tan started to flatten Intel's leadership team since taking over as top boss in March with many important chip groups reporting directly into him, including sales veteran
Greg Ernst
, who was appointed chief revenue officer. Ernst previously served as Intel's head of U.S. sales and marketing operations.

New Delhi: A team of researchers at IIT Delhi developed a compact, energy-efficient computing device using 2D materials technology. 2D materials technology involves the use of materials that are just one or a few atoms thick, offering unique electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Unlike conventional computers that rely on traditional semiconductor materials and bulky designs, often resulting in high power consumption, this innovation promises to make future computers significantly smaller, faster, and more power-efficient. The team, which includes Dr Manoj Kumar and Kritika Bhattacharya and is led by Dr Samaresh Das, head of centre for applied research in electronics at IIT Delhi, named the device MOD-PC (Multifunctional Optoelectronic Device for Processing Circuits). Optoelectronic signal processing means handling signals that involve both light (optical) and electricity (electronic). In regular computers, most signals are processed electronically (using electrical currents). However, optoelectronic devices can process signals using both light and electricity. Kumar, the lead author of the study, explained that the computing unit draws inspiration from the visual cortex of the human brain. This allows it to learn from optical light signals, mimic synaptic plasticity, and store data for long-term use. The device can also perform digital, analogue, and mixed-signal operations within a single unit, helping to overcome the traditional memory and power limitations faced by conventional computing systems, he added. Bhattacharya, a senior research fellow at IIT Delhi, led the fabrication and implementation of the MOD-PC chips. She shared that producing semiconductor chips from WSe2, which measure only a few nanometres in thickness and size, was challenging. However, with persistent efforts and advanced fabrication techniques, the team successfully achieved this breakthrough. Speaking about its real-world impact, Das, principal investigator of the project, said that the development of the MOD-PC device could transform neuro-vision computing hardware, with significant applications in artificial intelligence and neuro-robotics.

New Delhi: Students from schools in Bhubaneswar in Odisha, Dinjan in Assam and Gadarwara in Madhya Pradesh were among the six participants who secured top honours at the 10-day Live AI Summer Camp. Organised by The Times of India, the camp was specifically designed for school students from classes VI to XII to introduce young minds to the vast possibilities of artificial intelligence. As part of their final projects, the students created smarter, more user-friendly versions of their own school websites. The masterclass was held in recognition of the crucial role artificial intelligence is set to play in shaping the future. The students were divided into three categories: classes VI-VII, VIII-IX, and X-XII. In the classes VI-VII category, the top honour went to Reyansh Pradhan, a Class VI student of GD Goenka Public School, Bhubaneswar. ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV warned Friday that artificial intelligence could negatively impact the intellectual, neurological and spiritual development of young people as he pressed one of the priorities of his young pontificate. History's first American pope sent a message to a conference of AI and ethics, part of which was taking place in the Vatican in a sign of the Holy See's concern for the new technologies and what they mean for humanity. In the message, Leo said any further development of AI must be evaluated according to the 'superior ethical criterion' of the need to safeguard the dignity of each human being while respecting the diversity of the world's population. He warned specifically that new generations are most at risk given they have never had such quick access to information. 'All of us, I am sure, are concerned for children and young people, and the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development,' he said in the message. 'Society's well-being depends upon their being given the ability to develop their God-given gifts and capabilities,' and not allow them to confuse mere access to data with intelligence. 'In the end, authentic wisdom has more to do with recognizing the true meaning of life, than with the availability of data,' he said. Leo, who was elected in May after the death of Pope Francis, has identified AI as one of the most critical matters facing humanity, saying it poses challenges to defending human dignity, justice and labor. He has explained his concern for AI by invoking his namesake, Pope Leo XIII. That Leo was pope during the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and made the plight of workers, and the need to guarantee their rights and dignity, a key priority. Toward the end of his pontificate, Francis became increasingly vocal about the threats to humanity posed by AI and called for an international treaty to regulate it. Francis said politicians must take the lead in making sure AI remains human-centric, so that decisions about when to use weapons or even less-lethal tools always remain made by humans and not machines.
