The world's second-most consumed beverage faces a potentially complicated future as climate change increasingly reshapes growing regions of Camellia sinensis - the plant responsible for producing tea.
Every day, around 5 billion cups of the beverage are consumed, making it a staple around the globe, but a recent study warns that by 2025, more than half of the world's top 20 tea-producing countries may experience a reduction in land deemed suitable for cultivation.
Researchers say that vital growing regions could lose their growing viability due to changing temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns and varying humidity levels.
Climate change scenarios suggest that key growing regions may lose their suitability, potentially disrupting livelihoods and economies, for the most consumed beverage behind water.
Countries such as Argentina, Malawi and Tanzania are expected to face the most significant losses in suitable tea-growing land, while regions in Turkey, Iran, Thailand and Rwanda may actually experience gains in cultivable terrain, due to evolving climate patterns.
According to agricultural experts at Washington State University, optimal conditions for Camellia sinensis growth occur when relative humidity exceeds 75% and annual rainfall ranges between 50 and 100 inches.
Some areas in eastern Africa and Asia are experiencing extended drought, with associated changes in humidity values, which impacts production levels.

The United States is not considered to be a major producer of tea because of the climate and associated labor costs.
Countries such as China, India, Kenya and Sri Lanka are the largest producers of the plant.
According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, over 60% of global tea is produced by small-scale farms, where the crop serves as the main source of income.
The study evaluated nearly two dozen variables in primary growing areas, including precipitation patterns, changes in temperatures and soil acidity.
Researchers cautioned that the data was based on a global scale and not meant for localized decision-making, which would require further studies.
The drink's popularity stems not only from its cultural importance but also from its health impacts.
According to the FAO, tea consumption has increased annually by more than 3%, due to its affordability and accessibility across all income groups.

Risk of Sleep Breathing Disorder Set to Rise 45% by End of Century

Rising temperatures could increase the chances of experiencing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by nearly 50 percent by the end of the century, placing a greater burden on society through loss of health, wellbeing, and productivity. This is the result of a recent investigation into the effects of local temperature increases on OSA, a condition where a person's airways become blocked while sleeping for more than 10 seconds at least five times an hour throughout the night. "This study helps us to understand how environmental factors like climate might affect health by investigating whether ambient temperatures influence the severity of OSA," says sleep scientist Bastien Lechat from Flinders University in Australia, who led the study. "Overall, we were surprised by the magnitude of the association between ambient temperature and OSA severity." Many of the nearly 1 billion people globally with this sleep disorder don't even know they have it, yet it can take a serious toll on their health. Aside from affecting sleep quality, OSA alters the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. In the long term, this imbalance can affect insulin and glucose metabolism, mental function and mood, and can even lead to cardiovascular problems like heart failure and stroke. Previous research has also linked untreated or severe OSA with increased risk of dementia, Parkinson's disease, traffic accidents, and all-cause mortality. Lechat and his colleagues drew on data from an under-mattress sleep sensor used by 116,620 people across 29 countries between January 2020 and September 2023. The sensor detects movement and sound which can be analyzed to create estimates of sleep timing, quality, and breathing. The researchers matched this data – around 500 separate nights per person – with detailed, 24 hour temperature data for participant's nearest cities. In 2023, this coincided with the highest mean temperature recordings on record in over 2000 years, 2.07 °C above pre-industrial levels. "Higher temperatures were associated with a 45 percent increased likelihood of a sleeper experiencing OSA on a given night," Lechat says. "The increase in OSA prevalence in 2023 due to global warming was associated with a loss of approximately 800,000 healthy life years across the 29 countries studied. This number is similar to other medical conditions, such as bipolar disorder, Parkinson's disease or chronic kidney diseases." They estimate that the resulting wellbeing burden and workplace productivity loss cost economies a total of around $98 billion USD, with an estimated 105 million days of workplace productivity lost. All up, this would double the condition's estimated burden on society compared with today. "Importantly, these findings varied by region, with people in European countries seeing higher rates of OSA when temperatures rise than those in Australia and the United States, perhaps due to different rates of air conditioning usage," Lechat adds. Because the sleep sensors from which the data were collected are more readily available to people in higher socioeconomic countries and individuals, this study may actually underestimate the true health and economic cost of OSA exacerbated by climate change. These people may have access to better sleep environments and air conditioning, the researchers point out, mitigating the effect of temperature on their sleep. Modeling based on government climate change policies from 2020 suggests global warming will raise temperatures by around 2.1–3.4 °C by 2100, unless greenhouse gas emissions are further reduced. "The health and economic impact of these estimates would be consequential, and the increase in OSA prevalence due to rising temperatures in such scenario may double the overall OSA burden," the authors report. Cannabis Linked to 2x Risk of Heart Disease Death, Scientists Discover

New research suggests that cannabis use is linked to twice the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and is also associated with increased risk of other major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Cannabis is being legalized in more and more places worldwide, increasing medicinal and recreational use – but it may warrant closer monitoring by health professionals. The researchers here, led by a team from the University of Toulouse in France, wanted to look more closely at potential health risks that had previously been flagged. They looked at 24 previous studies published between 2016 and 2023, involving around 200 million people. Overall, the increased risk linked to cannabis use was 29 percent for acute coronary syndrome (reduced blood flow to the heart), 20 percent for strokes, and 100 percent for cardiovascular disease mortality. "The findings reveal positive associations between cannabis use and MACE," write the researchers in their published paper. "These findings should encourage investigating cannabis use in all patients presenting with serious cardiovascular disorders." There are some limitations worth bearing in mind here. The studies included in the research differed in terms of how they defined cannabis use, relied on self-reporting, and didn't measure use of the drug over time. That makes them less statistically robust. The research also notes a high risk of bias in the majority of studies investigated, due to the way they were structured. And it's important to say the research doesn't show direct cause and effect, only an association. It's possible that other factors not considered here are driving both cannabis use and heart health issues in certain groups of people. Nevertheless, the large number of people surveyed on their real-world use of cannabis counts in the study's favor. It also has more recent data than many other studies, and we know that cannabis use and composition is changing over time. That's enough to warrant deeper investigation into the possible health risks. "Legalizing the drug and expanding its medical use worldwide have likely contributed to profound changes in the general perception of cannabis and to the overall rise in cannabis consumption," write the researchers. "Consequently, users' profiles and consumption habits profoundly differ from those in the 2010s, especially as cannabis products show an increasing trend in potency, with rising concentrations of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)." Further research is absolutely needed here, not least to determine whether the chemicals and compounds in cannabis – of which there are hundreds – could be leading to these health risks, and how taking cannabis in different forms, such as inhalables or edibles, might have an influence. Previous studies have already shown how the drug can increase the risk of cancer, and significantly alter our DNA, for example. Cannabis could also trigger psychosis through the impact it has on the brain. The new study is accompanied by an editorial written by epidemiologists Stanton Glanz and Lynn Silver, from the University of California San Francisco. In it, Glanz and Silver argue that as cannabis use rises, more should be done to educate people about the risks – as has been done with cigarettes. "Specifically, cannabis should be treated like tobacco: not criminalized but discouraged, with protection of bystanders from secondhand exposure," they write.
