Italian MPs Consider Morocco's Autonomy Plan as Serious, Credible, Realistic Solution to Sahara Issue
Italian parliamentarians said that the autonomy plan put forward by Morocco is a serious, credible and realistic solution that now stands out as a preferred path towards a peaceful settlement of this conflict.
Speaking at the 2nd Policy Conference of the Coalition for Autonomy in the Sahara (AUSACO) in Dakhla on Tuesday, MPs Ettore Rosato and Ouidad Bakkali emphasized the growing momentum behind the Moroccan initiative, which continues to garner broadening international support.
Rosato and Bakkali—members of the parliamentary intergroup supporting autonomy—called on the international community to take action to help resolve the Sahara issue.
They also welcomed the socio-economic development in the Sahara region, which is establishing itself as a hub of peace and stability in the Sahel-Saharan area.
AUSACO's central objective is to advocate within political, parliamentary, and academic circles for Morocco's Autonomy Initiative as the sole and definitive solution to the regional dispute.
Additionally, Italian parliamentarians hailed the excellent bilateral relations, describing Morocco as an essential partner in addressing the challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region.
They also highlighted the Kingdom's position as a bridge between Europe and Africa, as well as a gateway to the African continent.
The 2nd edition of the AUSACO Policy Conferenc is held in Dakhla on April 29 and 30 under the theme "The New Reality of the Moroccan Sahara: A Pathway for a Revisited UN Approach in an Ever-Changing Geopolitical context."

Tel Aviv congratulated the attacks, describing a bold decision from Trump. 'Your bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history,' Benjamin Netanyahu said. The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, also commented on the attack, noting that he was alarmed by the use of force by the US against Iran. 'This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security,' he said. Hamas also responded to the attacks, condemning the US decision in 'strongest terms/' 'The US aggression against Iran is a dangerous escalation… We declare our solidarity with Iran, its leadership, and its people,' Hamas added. The Saudi Foreign Affairs Ministry also commented on the news, expressing its 'great concern over the US attacks. It also expressed the need to 'exert all efforts to exercise restraint, de-escalate, and avoid escalation.' Qatar echoed the same sentiment, calling on all parties to 'exercise wisdom, restraint, and to avoid further escalation.' The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, urged all sides to step back and prevent further escalation. UNHRC criticizes Algeria for mass expulsions of sub-Saharan migrants
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) opened its 59th regular session on June 16, running through July 9, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. During an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Gehad Madi, several participants denounced Algeria's mass expulsions of sub-Saharan migrants. A representative of the Network for Training, Research, and Action on African Migrations strongly condemned what she described as inhumane collective expulsions carried out by Algerian authorities. «Since 2024, many migrants, including women and children, have been abandoned in the Sahara Desert without water, food, or humanitarian aid. These practices are systematic and represent serious violations of international law and humanitarian conventions», she said. The Network also raised alarm over the growing number of mass disappearances of migrants and their exploitation by human trafficking networks, particularly in Libya, all unfolding in a climate of impunity. In light of what it called a catastrophic situation, the organization urged the countries concerned—including Algeria—to «strengthen regional cooperation to better protect migrants, establish effective mechanisms to search for and identify missing persons, and prioritize the protection of vulnerable groups, especially women and children». «Algeria is not only violating migrants' rights, it is also directly endangering thousands of lives», the Network added. In 2024, Algeria expelled more than 30,000 irregular migrants to Niger, up from 26,000 in 2023. These deportations have been condemned by the authorities in Niamey. Niger's Minister of the Interior, General Mohamed Toumba, expressed his outrage in April during a meeting with the director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stating that the expulsions «violate the principles of good cooperation and international treaties. These actions are regrettable and unacceptable». According to the NGO Alarme Phone Sahara, more than 16,000 irregular migrants—including women and children—have been expelled from Algeria to Niger since April. Meanwhile, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on April 26 during a visit to Béchar that he was open to regularizing undocumented sub-Saharan migrants, «provided their entry into the country is regulated».

France : New Moroccan consulate opens in Mantes-la-Jolie
A new Moroccan Consulate General was officially inaugurated on Friday in Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Paris region, further strengthening Morocco's consular network in France, which now includes 17 consulates. This opening is part of a broader strategy focused on proximity, modernization, and efficiency to better serve Moroccan nationals abroad. The new consulate is the result of an initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, aimed at addressing the needs of a large and active diaspora deeply connected to their country of origin. The inauguration ceremony—covering three departments in the Île-de-France region: Yvelines, Seine-Maritime, and Eure, home to nearly 156,000 Moroccans—was attended by Ambassador Samira Sitail; Fouad Kadmiri, Director of Consular and Social Affairs at the Ministry; and Mustapha El Bouazzaoui, Consul General of Morocco in Mantes-la-Jolie. French officials were also present, including the Prefect of Yvelines, Frédéric Rose; President of the Yvelines Departmental Council, Pierre Bédier; and the Mayor of Mantes-la-Jolie, Raphaël Cognet, along with numerous local elected officials, institutional representatives, and members of the Moroccan community from the covered departments. In her speech, Ambassador Sitail welcomed the opening, calling it a «source of pride and connection with Morocco» for the Moroccan communities in the three departments. She also praised the support of «our French friends» and their role in bringing the project to fruition. Fouad Kadmiri noted that the inauguration coincides with the launch of the Marhaba operation, as many Moroccans prepare to return home for the summer holidays, adding that the new consulate «comes at an opportune time to help the entire consular network rise to the occasion». For his part, Consul General Mustapha El Bouazzaoui said the consulate—which brings the total number of Moroccan consulates in Île-de-France to six—will be operational starting Monday. He noted it responds to a long-standing demand from Moroccans in Yvelines, Seine-Maritime, and Eure, with over 780 appointment requests already registered through the dedicated application.
