Road to relief: Noida to raze footpath, widen 600m e-way stretch near Prerna Sthal

Time of India07-06-2025

Noida: Noida Authority will partially raze the footpath, a roadside track and paver blocks near the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal to widen a 600-metre stretch of the expressway by 5.5 metres.
Tailbacks on the Noida to Delhi arm of the carriageway often extend till Mahamaya flyover as the stretch between Sector 95 and DND Flyway loop in front of the Prerna Sthal is currently tapered to make space for its pavement and a U-turn towards Sector 18 near the bird feeding point.
Last Dec, it added a lane, about 2 metres wide, by merging the left sidewalk with the DND Flyway Loop until Film City, a 250-metre stretch.
Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M said the Authority had sought a no-objection certificate for the road widening from the National Dalit Prerna Sthal Committee, which is responsible for the management, security, and maintenance of memorials, museums, institutions, parks, and gardens, on Sept 26 last year and the clearance was received on June 5.
Earlier, a consultant hired by the Noida Authority to find out how the expressway section could be widened had recommended removing a one-metre-wide roadside track, a 1.4-metre-wide footpath with railings, and a 3.1-metre-wide stretch with pavers to widen the carriageway by 5.5 metres.
Once ready, the total road width in the stretch will go up from 39.5 metres to 45 metres.
According to the official, traffic chaos near the DND loop has prompted the need to widen the stretch as the four-lane expressway narrows to three lanes after the bird feeding point.

There are daily bottlenecks on the stretch as two lakh vehicles from Film City, Sector 18, and GIP Mall areas converge and enter the expressway via the Film City flyover for Delhi. Lane indiscipline near the DND loop adds to the jams. Traffic police are frequently forced to stop vehicles coming from the flyover to regulate traffic flow towards Delhi.
Officials said road widening would improve lane continuity and reduce snarls.
After the Noida Authority board approves the plan, a tender will be issued, and construction will commence thereafter.
Nearly 5 lakh vehicles use the Noida Expressway daily, with two lakh entering the city through the DND Flyway stretch, and another lakh each from Kalindi Kunj, Chilla Border, and Noida's internal sectors.

Govt to compensate highway operators, investors for losses due to annual pass scheme

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will come up with a compensation framework for private highway operators and investors, including overseas pension funds, who have betted on the highway sector for the losses they incur after rollout of 'annual pass' for private vehicles on national highways and expressways from Aug 15. This is particularly important considering that the highway sector has recorded the best outcomes in govt's monetisation programme and NHAI will receive greater focus for the purpose in the next five years. Sources in the road transport ministry said a committee will work out the framework over the next one month after holding deliberations with the stakeholders. Players across road infrastructure value chain, including companies such as Cube Mobility and IRB Infrastructure and the Adani group, sovereign fund and asset managers like NIIF, and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board have invested heavily in the sector. There are also several NH stretches where private highway builders are collecting toll as per ongoing contracts. 'There are some apprehensions among private investors who have taken on completed projects under the monetisation programme about their losses since they have paid upfront, based on projection of traffic and toll revenue. But since we have to keep in mind the interests of all stakeholders, especially users, we are sticking to the Aug 15 timeline,' a top NHAI official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo NHAI has monetised its projects through three models — Toll Operate Transfer (TOT), infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs) and securitisation. The official added that work on the annual pass scheme had started months back and all implications have been worked out, based on past toll collection data. Data show that NHAI has achieved 71% of the monetisation target in the highway sector, raising Rs 1.2 lakh crore out of the targeted Rs 1.6 lakh crore till FY2024-25.

2.5cr allocated by GCC for CNG cattle-catching vehicles in city

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has sanctioned the replacement of eight aging cattle-catching vehicles with newly designed, CNG-powered alternatives. The move is expected to improve operational efficiency and support the city's green initiatives. The civic agency has set aside 2.56 crore for the new vehicles. Cattle roaming in public areas not only pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians but also contribute to frequent traffic congestion, particularly in densely populated and commercial zones. Currently, GCC operates 20 specially fabricated vehicles equipped with hydraulic lifts to manage such situations. However, eight of these vehicles have been in continuous operation for over 10 years and are now beyond economical repair, officials said. "Additionally, diesel engines contribute to urban air pollution. Administration is now exploring cleaner alternatives," said a senior GCC official. During the budget session, the mayor announced that the civic body will procure CNG vehicles for cattle. Each of the new CNG vehicles is estimated to cost 32 lakh, bringing the total project cost for all eight units to 2.56 crore. Once the new vehicles are inducted into service, GCC will initiate the scrapping of the obsolete vehicles, in accordance with environmental and safety regulations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo Members of the public, however, lament over stray cattle menace. ‘Cracks' on flyovers raise alarm, officials say no threat

Ranchi: 'Cracks' on the Kantatoli and Siramtoli flyovers have raised safety concerns among commuters, prompting quick inspection and intervention by the road construction department (RCD). These 'cracks', seen as lines along the walls with soft material protruding in some places, led to speculation about structural flaws. However, officials clarified that these are expansion joints, a critical design feature in large concrete structures, and pose no structural threat. "An expansion joint is a deliberate gap left between sections of concrete to allow for thermal expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. The gap is often filled with compressible materials like thermocol or foam to absorb movement. In the case of 2.24-km long Kantatoli flyover, built at a cost of Rs 224 crore, commuters observed thermocol dislodging from the joints before the Kokar ramp, which caused concern," Sunil Kumar, secretary of urban development and housing department (UDHD) and RCD, said. "The material seen coming out is thermocol, used in expansion joints to accommodate thermal expansion of the flyover structure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List These joints are not construction flaws but essential engineering provisions. The flyovers are safe," he added. Kumar further added that engineers inspected the site and found no signs of structural damage. "The remedy involves re-inserting the thermocol and covering the joint with protective paint. There is no risk to public safety. The Siramtoli flyover, which is 2.34 km long and built at a cost of Rs 255 crore, has a 100-year design life. We have provisions for thorough maintenance every 10 years," he added. Commuters using the Siramtoli flyover had recently flagged concerns about loose and protruding screws on a speed-breaker. On Sunday, the road construction department deployed engineers to address the issue. The screws were re-tightened and secured with industrial-grade adhesive to prevent recurrence. "It felt risky driving over the bump with metal parts sticking out. Two-wheeler riders like me were especially worried about skidding. We're relieved the authorities took quick action," said Rajeev Sinha, a daily commuter who uses the flyover to reach Doranda from Lalpur, said. In response to complaints about protruding nails from a speed-breaker on the Siramtoli stretch, RCD engineers carried out immediate repairs on Friday. "The screws were tightened and industrial adhesive applied to ensure they don't come loose again," said Kumar.
