Eurovision Drama and ‘The Nameless': Movistar Plus+ Exec Touts Focus on Event Programming
Ambition, emotion and event programming — those are some of the key factors that Spanish pay-TV and streaming giant Movistar Plus+ is looking for in its originals, including its Eurovision Song Contest drama miniseries La Canción (The Song).
Susana Herreras, manager of original fiction content production at the company, which is part of Telefónica, touted several examples of such content at the Conecta Fiction & Entertainment industry gathering in Cuenca, Spain, on Tuesday.

She showed a teaser for the recent series La Canción, which tells the story of how Spain under General Franco in 1968 upset the U.K. frontrunner Cliff Richard and his 'Congratulations' to win the Eurovision Song Contest with Massiel's 'La la la.' Created by Pepe Coira and Fran Araújo, and directed by Alejandro Marín, the series stars Carolina Yuste, Patrick Criado, Àlex Brendemühl, and Marcel Borràs. Movistar Plus+ Internacional is distributing the show outside of Spain.
Herreras also teased the psychological thriller series Los Sin Nombre (The Nameless), which is set to debut in June. Created by Pau Freixas and Pol Cortecans, written by the latter and directed by the former, the series stars Miren Ibarguren, Rodrigo de la Serna, and Milena Smit.
'It is key for us to manage to make projects into events,' the Movistar Plus+ executive told Conecta. 'We need to have an emotional connection.'
One of the most important keys for the Spanish player is ambition, Herreras concluded. 'This is how we want to be defined.'
At a time when more and more industry players look for co-productions to put together the budgets needed for the kind of ambition that audiences expect these days, Movistar Plus+ is always open for co-producers where it makes sense. 'We have the will to keep looking for partners,' Herreras explained.
Earlier in the Conecta conference day, executives from the likes of Gaumont Television and Warner Bros. Discovery discussed their original programming plans and the state of the TV industry.

Mysteries: ‘Don't Let Him In' and ‘Murder Takes a Vacation'
Midway through Lisa Jewell's 'Don't Let Him In,' two friends, Martha and Grace, meet for lunch. When Martha describes how attentive her previously errant boyfriend has become, Grace is relieved but still skeptical. 'I thought it was going to end up that he was one of those blokes you read about,' she admits. 'The ones who marry loads of women and lie to everyone and steal all their money.' That fairly sums up the deceptions at the core of this subtly layered British thriller, but it's not the whole story. For the crimes perpetrated here, including murder, are part of a larger mosaic, one that depicts the intersecting lives of three female characters so vividly that we feel, at times, more like voyeurs than readers. Their intimate thoughts become as familiar to us as their occasionally messy households. The dishes piled in the sink, the morning scramble, the sudden silence of an emptied house: Ms. Jewell captures these moments, as she does the doubts and fears of the residents. One such is Ash (short for Aisling), a young woman who 'feels the thud and canter of time running by as her early twenties bleed into her late twenties and thirty appears heavy on the horizon.' She's still reeling from the death of her father—who was pushed under a train by an apparently deranged stranger—when her mother, Nina, welcomes handsome Nick Radcliffe into their seaside home. Nick claims to have known Ash's father, but she is wary of the charmer with 'neat cuticles and defined muscles and a brand-new haircut.' Ash wonders: 'Why has this man never been married?' The reader knows that he is married (a fact revealed at the outset), and much more, because alternating chapters of the novel are narrated by this consummate liar. We see the world both as it is, therefore, and through his eyes. We see the world both as it is and through his eyes. 'They are my puppets now in so many ways,' Nick gloats—with a touch of melodrama—when he begins spying on Nina's family, 'and I am their master.' As Nick's deceptions multiply, we fear for his victims—chief among them Tara, a successful businesswoman who almost outwits him, and Martha, the sweet-natured florist who might have been his salvation—and brace ourselves for the unmasking of a con artist who remains defiant to the last. 'You all wanted me,' he silently protests when finally cornered. 'You all had gaping voids in your lives. . . . I did not force one of you to choose me.' By then, Ash has uncovered the truth, if not the bodies, though Ms. Jewell shocks us with one final twist. Over the course of more than 20 novels, she has perfected such denouements. The enduring appeal of her fiction, however, resides not in its cleverness, but in the atmosphere of intimate unease that Ms. Jewell—like her forebear Ruth Rendell—so expertly creates.

When Is Zombie Thriller '28 Years Later' Coming To Streaming?
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams in "28 Years Later." Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later is now in theaters. When will horror thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Jodi Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson be available to watch at home? Rated R, 28 Years Later opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. The summary for the film reads, 'It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. 'When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers the secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.' Written by Alex Garland — who collaborated with Boyle on the 2002 horror hit 28 Days Later — 28 Years Later also stars Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, Emma Laird and Jack O'Connell. Currently, the only way you can see 28 Years Later is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes. The first stop for 28 Years Later in the home entertainment marketplace will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is the studio behind 28 Years Later, typically waits for one month to six weeks after opening its films in theaters to make them available on PVOD. A recent example of Sony's digital streaming release pattern is the studio's horror thriller Until Dawn, which debuted on PVOD on May 23, less than a month after it opened in theaters on April 25. However, the Marvel comic book movie Venom: The Last Dance, debuted on PVOD on Dec. 10, 2024, about six weeks after it opened in theaters on Oct. 25. If 28 Weeks Later follows the same release pattern as the two titles above, then viewers can expect the film to arrive on PVOD anytime between July 22 and Aug. 5, since new films on PVOD generally come out on Tuesdays. New films on PVOD are typically available for digital purchase for anywhere between $19.99 and $29.99 or rented for 48 hours for anywhere from $14.99 to $24.99. Typically, new PVOD titles are available on a variety of platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. Since Sony Pictures Entertainment has a deal with the platform to exhibit its films first on streaming video on demand, 28 Years Later will make its SVOD debut on Netflix. It generally takes three to four months from the time a Sony film opens in theaters to the time it arrives on Netflix. Recently, the horror thriller Heart Eyes arrived on Netflix on May 8, just over a month after it opened in theaters on Feb. 7. Venom: The Last Dance, however, arrived on Netflix on Feb. 25, exactly four months after it debuted in theaters on Oct. 25, 2024. If 28 Years Later follows the same pattern, then viewers can expect the film to arrive on Netflix between Sept. 19 and Oct. 24, give or take a few days. While some streaming services like Max generally release new films on its platform on Fridays, Netflix doesn't tend to rely on a specific day of the week to begin streaming new films.
