7 things to know about new Buffalo Bills WR Josh Palmer
The Buffalo Bills have rounded out their core receiving group for the next several seasons, adding native Canadian Josh Palmer on a three-year deal with $18M guaranteed and worth up to $36M.
While the $12M per season pricetag raised some eyebrows, it could be worth it in terms of what Palmer could do for the Buffalo passing game.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound 25-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, was a third-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021.
A closer look at what he brings to Buffalo is in order for Bills fans to get to know Palmer better.
With that, here are seven things to know about the new Bills receiver:
Seperator
First and foremost, Palmer provides the Bills with something they've been missing.
Josh Allen averaged only 5.4 air yards per completion in 2024 — 21st amongst NFL passers. Buffalo lacked a separator who could routinely stretch the opposing defense.
Palmer, who averaged more than 15.0 yards per reception over the last two seasons. According to Fantasy Points Data, Palmer ranked eighth out of 131 qualifying receivers in separation score against man coverage last season. Last season, Palmer finished 17th in separation score and averaged 2.6 yards of separation per play.
Full Routes
Another positive attribute he brings to the offense is running full routes, which is something that helps to bring efficiency and effectiveness to the execution of plays called.

Deep Threat
During his early career, quarterback Josh Allen more often than not had at least one deep threat on the roster. Since Gabe Davis's departure during free agency last offseason, however, a deep weapon has been missing from the arsenal.
During 2024, his 15.2 air yards/target and 27.7% deep target rate were both good for 3rd in the league.
Key Addition
Palmer has the potential to be the missing piece and key that unlocks the Bills' passing game, in terms of coordinator Joe Brady's playcalling and Allen's passing, but also for fellow pass catchers as well.
He'll be able to play inside as well as outside and deep, which will open things up for Coleman, Kincaid, and Samuel, who similarly signed to a several-year pact last offseason and did not make an impact until late in Buffalo's 2024 campaign.

In the worst-case scenario, Ballentine described James Cook's contract status as a way to "water down" the offense. "James Cook had nearly 400 more scrimmage yards than any other player on the offense," Ballentine wrote. "His emergence as a dual-threat running back has been one of the reasons Brandon Beane deserves credit for putting together a supporting cast that works around Allen." As a contributor to Buffalo's offense, there's an argument to be made that Cook is the group's best player outside of Allen. With just under $5 million in cap space, Buffalo isn't in a position to give him that kind of money. While Cook did arrive for mandatory minicamp, there's no guarantee that he will show up for training camp in a month. But with Mack Hollins and Amari Cooper leaving, and Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore and Laviska Shenault Jr. coming in, the Bills' weapons appear to be at least as good on paper as last season. Yet, the narrative that Allen needs more help continues to be pushed, and Bleacher Report is the latest publication to run with it, only to contradict itself. Bleacher Report lists receiver as Buffalo's biggest need, but then proceeds to say: "Josh Allen has proved he doesn't need an elite supporting cast to create an elite offense. The Bills were second in EPA per play despite Khalil Shakir leading all receivers with 821 yards. The Bills' group of playmakers was not elite, but it did work well together. If each of them takes the next step and becomes an even more reliable target for Allen, then the team should be able to make a run at being the top offense in the league in every category." The Bills "need" a receiver, but if everyone improves, that could be a top unit? With Coleman entering Year 2 and Kincaid not dealing with a knee injury that had plagued him, both should see improvements in 2025. Additionally, Palmer can be seen as an upgrade over Cooper, at the very least, and possibly Hollins. Advertisement Then we have Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir, who round out the offense. If all take even a slight step forward, as Bleacher Report suggests, the unit could be one of the best in the league. And that's without another receiver being signed.
