Cole Palmer makes surprise admission as he explains shirt number change
Chelsea star Cole Palmer made a surprise revelation while explaining his decision to switch to the No.10 shirt. Following their opening win against Los Angeles FC, Chelsea continue their Club World Cup campaign on Friday night against Flamengo. The Premier League club take on the Brazilian giants, whose side includes former Chelsea and Arsenal star Jorginho, in Philadelphia at 7pm UK time. Ahead of the tournament, it was announced that Palmer would be switching his shirt number from 20 to 10, befitting of his status as arguably the team's best player. The No.10 shirt had been worn by Mykhailo Mudryk since January 2023, with the Ukraine international not given a replacement number amid his suspension for failing a doping test last year. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Since the announcement, Mudryk has been charged by the Football Association and could be banned from football for up to four years, with Enzo Maresca seemingly in the dark about his future at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old, nicknamed 'Misha' by his teammates, has denied knowingly taking any banned substances, explaining in a statement last November he was in 'complete shock' having 'not done anything wrong'. It is usually customary for players to seek permission from each other if they wish to take their squad number, but Palmer has revealed that he has not been in contact with his exiled teammate. 'I have not spoken to Misha yet, but I will when the time is right,' the England international told reporters ahead of the Flamengo clash. 'It is not really my place to get involved with him at the minute. I will speak to him. On Wednesday, June 18, a Football Associaton spokesman said: 'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations. 'As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.' 'I wore No.10 all my life growing up and I just like the number. More Trending 'Lionel Messi the big one, Wayne Rooney and players like that – it's an iconic number.' Palmer will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of successful Chelsea No.10s like Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Joe Cole. Maresca also confirmed that he had no say in the matter, adding: 'Was I involved in this decision? No, no, I don't care about the numbers. 'It's a player matter. Is Cole good enough to wear the No10? Yes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Teenager broke into schoolmate's house to rob ‘personal items'
A teenager accused of entering a schoolmate's house and stealing cash and a number of personal items had his case adjourned for a probation report. Aaron Palmer, 18, with an address in Dromagh, Mallow, pleaded guilty to one charge of burglary and one of theft after being arrested by Gardaí on New Year's Day of this year. The court was told that reports were made about a number of items that were missing from a family home in Dromtarriff between St Stephen's Day last year, and New Year's Day of this year. Mallow Courthouse, Great William O'Brien Street News in 90 Seconds - June 20th The court heard Louise O'Callaghan had noted money and personal items that had gone missing from her bedroom. She subsequently confronted her family about the missing items who said they weren't aware of the missing items, nor had they taken them. The owner of the property Mary O'Callaghan became concerned and installed CCTV outside and inside the house. Subsequently, Louise heard someone entering her bedroom while asleep, at approximately 4am. At first she believed it was her mother but she confirmed that she hadn't entered the room. Having reviewed the footage, the family saw a man identified as Aaron Palmer entering the house and going up to her room. After arrest, the court was told that Mr Palmer made admissions to Gardaí of stealing a set of keys from Louise O'Callaghan's coat in school and admitted entering the house without her permission and taking the property. Mr Palmer retrieved the items and returned them to their rightful owner and was arrested and conveyed to Mallow Garda Station. Judge Colm Roberts ordered a probation order 'given the circumstances of the case', where his defence solicitor told the court that 'he had a lot going on.' Judge Roberts told the court that Mr Palmer 'was possibly not reading the correct messages, and that's putting it delicately as possible.' An adjournment was agreed until October 14, while Mr Palmer was remanded on bail to that date for a penalty to be decided. 'It may be that the probation service may suggest other directions, he is a young man,' concluded Judge Colm Roberts.

Cole Palmer reveals bizarre reason he wore mask on Chelsea's Club World Cup plane and says even Maresca didn't know why
COLE PALMER wants to follow in the footsteps of football's icons by taking on the challenge as Chelsea's No. 10. Yet he is fast becoming one himself as his career shoots for the stars. Palmer has been handed the coveted shirt number from team-mate Mykhailo Mudryk, 24, who is facing doping charges and a potential four-year ban. 3 Cole Palmer is Chelsea's new No.10 Credit: Getty 3 He has taken the number from the banned Mykhailo Mudryk Credit: AP Images of Chelsea's most gifted player are plastered across every advertising banner, hoarding and online publicity shot as Fifa cash in on his growing fame at the Club World Cup. While Palmer talks of his admiration for Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and former Blues No .10 Eden Hazard, it is slowly dawning on him that he is being swiftly elevated in status too. The forward, 23, said: 'I wore No .10 growing up. 'Messi is the big one, Rooney and players like that. It's an iconic number.' He asked me for one of my shirts for his sons. To see him was nice, we had a conversation.' Fame does not come easy for this understated lad from Manchester. Palmer added: 'I haven't walked around Philly yet but I feel like America is different, they don't really watch football. 'Back home I get recognised. JORGINHO - FAMILIAR Face for Chelsea fans, well those in the UK anyway. Might not be so over here in the US. But a Champions League winner with The Blues in 2021. He was an acquired taste for the supporters, they saw him as a symbol of the derided 'Sarri-ball' of former boss Maurizio Sarri, who won them the Europa League and finished third in the Premier League. DANILO - DEFENDER Who will also be recognisable to English soccer fans. A defender with Manchester City for two seasons. Was not a mainstay of the team but still collected two Premier League titles - successive ones between 2017 & 2019. FILIPE LUIS - A LEFT BACK Who also played for Chelsea. Bought from Atletico Madrid by legendary Blues boss Jose Mourinho. He was drafted to fill the boots of iconic left back Ashley Cole but it never quite worked out. He stayed only one season and made barely a dozen appearances. 3 Palmer sparked intrigue as he wore a mask on the flight to the US Credit: Reuters Palmer can wave goodbye to normal as the face of the new Blues. His off-the-cuff style and habit of turning games on their heads in split seconds make him a huge draw. After training this week, he was mobbed by dozens of schoolchildren. American kids who have grown to love him from 4,000 miles away. Chelsea play Flamengo on Friday evening and Palmer has a special reason to play even better against the Rio giants. He said: 'Well, my uncle lives in Brazil and messaged me to say they're one of their biggest clubs and that's all they are talking about, so I expect it will be a good game. He messaged me to say please score. 'Playing a game every three days in this heat is difficult but it's bringing us closer together as a team.' One image of Palmer that sent shockwaves through Fifa saw him getting off the plane wearing a face mask. Boss Enzo Maresca wrote the whole thing off as a practical joke. But Palmer explained: 'It wasn't a joke I just don't like the smell of planes. That's why I wear a mask. 'Nothing else. Enzo doesn't know, I didn't tell him, but he didn't ask me to be fair.' Mudryk will be issued with a new squad number once his issues over a positive test for banned substance meldonium is resolved. Palmer said: 'I have not spoken to Misha yet but I will when the time is right.'
