Stay vigilant, use discretion to avoid being scammed, advises N. Sembilan MB

SEREMBAN: People in Negeri Sembilan, especially civil servants and retirees, are advised to be vigilant and use their discretion to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said this follows a report of an increase in commercial crime in the state, recording losses totalling RM47.74 million in the January to March period this year, compared with RM33.84 million in the same period last year.
He said fraud cases involve not only senior citizens or retirees but young people who are exposed to scammers.
'Scammers are now more cunning; they target all age groups no matter young or old... even my child once fell victim to a scam related to gym membership.
'Fortunately, my child realised it (scam) in time, and only lost RM200 of the original sum of RM2,000,' he told reporters after the Negeri Sembilan State Government Administration Retirees Appreciation Ceremony 2024 at Palm Seremban Hotel here today.
Also present at the event was State Secretary Datuk Mohd Zafir Ibrahim.
Aminuddin, who is also the Port Dickson member of parliament said the state government will continue to cooperate with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) as well as related agencies in comprehensively combating fraud activities.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khalid expressed his gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for consenting to his appointment as the 15 IGP and to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the trust placed in him. 'I would also like to thank the Home Minister for his leadership in steering the PDRM towards greater excellence. 'My deepest appreciation and thanks also go to the 14th IGP, and I believe I will carry on the initiatives that have already been implemented,' he said.

Ex-Tronoh assemblyman's final appeal against his rape conviction and prison sentence to be heard on Aug 27

PUTRAJAYA — The Federal Court has fixed Aug 27 to hear former Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong Choo Kiong's (picture) appeal against his conviction and imprisonment for allegedly raping his maid. One of his lawyers, Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, confirmed with Bernama the hearing date following a case management held today. Also representing Yong is lawyer Datuk Rajpal Singh. Yong is appealing against the Court of Appeal's decision in upholding the decision of the High Court which convicted him for raping his 23-year-old Indonesian maid. The High Court, in July 2022, sentenced Yong to 13 years imprisonment, but the Court of Appeal in March, last year, reduced the sentence to eight years. He was alleged to have commited the offence in a room at his house in Ipoh, between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 7, 2019. The Court of Appeal, in a 2-1 majority decision, dismissed Yong's appeal against his conviction but reduced his prison sentence to eight years, along with two strokes of the cane. The appellate court, however, granted a stay of execution, pending disposal of the appeal at the Federal Court and Yong was released on RM30,000 bail with one surety and ordered to surrender his passport to the court. In March this year, the High Court in Ipoh, Perak dismissed Yong's application to submit additional evidence in his appeal. A lawyer for the maid had testified in the High Court that the woman has withdrawn her rape allegations against Yong and she made the retraction through a statutory declaration affirmed in Indonesia. — BERNAMA
