The Hindu5 hours ago

Armed with his new-found mental strength, B. Benediction Rohit set a India best time on his way to claim the men's 100m butterfly gold on the opening day of the National aquatics championships at the Kalinga Stadium Aquatic Centre here on Sunday.
Rohit, who was born with a broken right thigh bone and took to swimming for physical fitness, clocked 52.50 to achieve his target of erasing Virdhawal Khade's India best mark of 52.79 and co-competitor Sajan Prakash's four-year-old meet record of 53.24. Sajan finished second with 53.51.
'I focused on my own race. Overthinking and the pressure of competition affected my performance in the past. My coach Nihar Ameen worked more on the mental side of my game,' said Rohit, who timed 54.4 in the last edition and 53.8 in the National Games, about his steady progress.
Even as she missed the meet record by 0.37 second, Harshitha Jayram lowered her personal best by nearly three seconds to time 2:37.72 and clinch the women's 200m breaststroke gold.
Bhavya Sachdeva overcame a forgettable performance a year ago to match her personal best (4:26.66) for the 400m freestyle crown.
Home favourite Shristi Upadhaya and Astha Choudhury clocked an identical 1:03.50 to share the 100m butterfly gold. Paris Olympian Dhinidhi Desinghu took the bronze with 1:03.52.
Karnataka, comprising Vihitha Nayana Loganathan, Meenakshi Menon, Trisha Sindhu S. and Dhinidhi, won the women's 4x200m freestyle relay title with a new meet record.
The results (winners only): Men: 200m freestyle: Aneesh Gowda (Kar) 1:50.85; 200m breaststroke: Danush Suresh (TN) 2:19.17; 100m butterfly: B. Benediction Rohit (TN) 52.57 (NMR, Old 53.24, Sajan Prakash, 2021); 4x200m freestyle relay: Karnataka 7:40.90.

Rohini Rules Again For Maharashtra, Gayatri Gets Maiden National Wrestling Gold

1 2 3 Nagpur: Maharashtra's most experienced grappler and reigning Asian Games gold medallist, Rohini Khanu Devba of Kolhapur, won all the bouts she played without conceding a point to underline her supremacy in the Chief Minister's Cup U-15 National wrestling championship, which concluded at the indoor stadium of Divisional Sports Complex in Mankapur on Sunday. Maharashtra grapplers managed to clinch just two gold medals on the concluding day, with Haryana wrestlers stealing the thunder of the home state by winning the overall championship in all three categories. Maharashtra finished second by marginally falling short to Haryana in both the boys' and girls' freestyle events and in the Greco-Roman boys' group. While Maharashtra started their campaign on a high on Saturday, the home state grapplers fared poorly on the concluding day. The face-saving gold medals that Maharashtra won came in the girls' freestyle category, where Rohini lived up to her top billing, and Gayatri Shinde from Shirsodi village of Indapur Taluka in Pune, registered a thumping triumph. As many as five Maharashtra grapplers managed to reach the finals on Sunday but missed the India bus by losing their bouts. The champion wrestler in all the groups qualified to represent the country in the forthcoming Asian Championship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Passos (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo In the girls' freestyle section, Rohini, 33kg weight category National and Asian Games champion, participated in the higher 36kg group. Much like her dominance during the Asian Championship held last year in Thailand, Rohini won all the bouts she played in the 36kg group without losing a single point. In the final, Rohini blanked Karnataka's Sushmita Kammar 10-0 to register a thumping triumph. Later in the evening, another small-town girl from Maharashtra, Gayatri Shinde, rallied from a point down to outclass Shrasti Kumar from Delhi 12-6 and win the 42kg gold medal. While Rohini and Gayatri sealed their Indian berth for the Asian Championship, Maharashtra's Ketaki Jadhav and Sharvari Rathod suffered heartbreaking losses in the finals. Ketaki lost the 62kg freestyle final to Uttar Pradesh's Ankita Kushavha, while Sharvari Rathod went down fighting to Punjab's Puravi Sharma in the controversial 66kg girls' summit clash 3-5. Of the 10 weight category U-15 boys' Greco-Roman event, three Maharashtra grapplers managed to reach the finals but suffered losses to win silver medals. In the 62kg final, Darpan Chaudhari failed to find the grip against Karnataka's Taimmeshi, losing the clash 4-13. Similarly, in the 85kg title round, Rahul Satkar went down fighting to UP's Suraj Sharma 9-14 in a high-scoring bout. Earlier, in an exciting 41kg final, Sachin Shirole of Maharashtra suffered a heartbreaking 6-8 defeat against Haryana's Monu Kumar. The four bronze medals that Maharashtra grapplers Sarthak Phuge, Dhiraj Daphale, Vinayak Tambekar, and Harshvardhan Patil won came in the 38kg, 48kg, 52kg, and 57kg weight categories respectively. Haryana wrestlers winning in all the categories clinched the general championship. Despite failing to win a gold medal, Maharashtra Greco-Roman wrestlers finished second, collecting 147 points. Haryana finished on top of the table with 157 points, while Rajasthan came third with 116 points. In the girls' freestyle group, Haryana edged out Maharashtra by nine points (171-161). Delhi, with 139 points, finished third. Similarly, in the boys' freestyle event, Haryana (155) outclassed Maharashtra (137) by 18 points. Later, in the concluding ceremony, president of Maharashtra Wrestling Association and former MP Ramdas Tadas, president of the organising committee and MLC Sandip Joshi, Hindkesari Yogesh Dhoke, NMC sports officer Piyush Ambulkar, and other WFI officials distributed the prizes.

Hockey: Two-time Olympic medallist Lalit Kumar Upadhyay announces retirement from international hockey

Indian forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay announced his retirement from international hockey on Sunday, bringing down the curtains on a career that lasted more than a decade and saw him be a part of two Olympic Games bronze medal-winning teams. 'This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams. From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice — it's been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride. Becoming an Olympian from my city after 26 years is something I'll always carry with honor and gratitude,' Lalit posted on his social media accounts. Lalith played in four matches of the eight that India played in Europe to close out their 2024-'25 Pro League season. The last match he played was against Australia in on 15 June. He has played 183 matches for India in senior international hockey, scoring 67 goals. The 31-year-old from Uttar Pradesh thanked various people who have played a part in his career. 'To my first coach Shri Parmanand Mishra, who introduced me to hockey and built my foundation. To Harender Sir, who gave me my first break by picking me in Air India. To Sameer Bhai and Dhanraj Sir, who mentored me with care and belief during that time. To BPCL, for offering me a job and giving me 8 meaningful years of work and growth. To my friends and teammates, who made the journey unforgettable. To Hockey India for giving me the opportunity to wear the national jersey. And to the state government, for honoring my journey by appointing me as a DSP — a responsibility I hold with pride.' But he reserved one final note of thanks to current India captain Harmanpreet Singh, saying, 'Hockey has given me everything, and you're one of its greatest gifts, brother.' For the talented boy from Varanasi, known for his dodging skills and creative stick-work on the field, the career almost ended before it even began. In 2008, he was used as a bait in a TV sting operation that led to erstwhile IHF being disbanded, and it also ruined Upadhyay's reputation as he was sidelined from the national programme. Lalit considered quitting hockey just at the age of 17 but kept at it and found his breakthroughs eventually. Dhanraj Pillay got him a contract with Air India in 2010, where he began picking up the pieces. Four years later, former India captain Tushar Khandker helped him get a job at BPCL and around the same time Lalit was picked for Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League as well. More recently, the forward who has scored some memorable goals through his career, has struggled for consistency and with younger forwards coming through the ranks, has decided to call time. One of those younger forwards, Abhishek, posted on Instagram: 'Your journey has been nothing short of inspiring, the dedication, passion, and humility you brought to the game will always be remembered. You've left behind a legacy that will continue to guide and motivate the next generation.'

'It won't be easy': Sourav Ganguly lays out path for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play in 2027 ODI World Cup

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's Test retirements have sparked debate over their 2027 ODI World Cup hopes. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes it won't be easy for the legends and outlined what they must do to stay in contention. read more Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shocked the world recently by announcing their retirements from Test cricket. They had already stepped down from T20 cricket last year after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their recent decisions to retire from red-ball cricket have raised a big question around their availability to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both Kohli and Rohit are modern-day legends, and fans would love to see them lift the ODI World Cup trophy before they say goodbye to international cricket. The 2027 Cricket World Cup is still more than two years away and by then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will turn 40. There are concerns regarding their fitness and match-readiness at that age. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, since they won't be playing Tests and T20s anymore, some believe that they can now fully focus on ODIs and prepare themselves just for the 50-over format. That could actually work in their favour, as they will have fewer matches to worry about and can manage their bodies better. Ganguly on Kohli-Rohit's ODI future But former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has a different view. Ganguly believes that if Kohli and Rohit are serious about playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, they will have to stay active in the format for the next two years. 'It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in an interview. India have at least 27 ODI matches scheduled between now and the next World Cup. Ganguly feels that Kohli and Rohit must stay committed to playing most, if not all, of these matches if they really want to be part of the World Cup squad. Both Rohit and Kohli have already had legendary careers. They recently won the ICC Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. They qualified for the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single game, but lost to Australia in the summit clash. Note, Rohit is still the captain of the Indian ODI team.
