Ben Stokes' Honest Admission On Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's Absence: "Doesn't Mean That We..."
Ahead of the first Test of the five-match series, England captain Ben Stokes said that despite being without their three experienced players - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R. Ashwin - it is not going to be easy for the hosts to dominate the Shubman Gill-led team because of the gigantic talent pool of the Indian cricket. Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from the red-ball format last month, while Ashwin called time on his international career last year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Gill's era, which is starting with the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for India at Headingley on Friday, India have a herculean task of filling the big boots of the stalwarts and approaching the future with a clear mindset. "There's been a lot said about no Rohit (Sharma), no Virat (Kohli) and no Ashwin. That doesn't mean that we think it's going to be any easier than it ever has been against India. The pool of talent that Indian cricket has is just ginormous," Stokes said in the press conference on the eve of the series opener. "So, although Virat, Rohit, and Ashwin have done amazing things for their country on the field, that doesn't mean that whoever comes in to replace those individuals are going to be any less hard to bowl that out back in just because of how big the pool of talent is in India. I've spent a lot of time out of the IPL, so I know that there's a lot of it. Obviously, three massive names, three people who have done wonderful things for their country, but it's not going to be any easier for us because of those three big names out here," he added. Stokes added that his side's sole focus is limited to the India series and not thinking beyond. "Well, look, I think first and foremost, obviously it's five games against India that we're focusing on. We know it's going to be tough, as always against India. Five Test matches are very demanding on the body. So, yeah, we'll be focusing on these five games first," he said. On Chris Woakes leading the pace attack in the first Test, the all-rounder said his inclusion adds value to their side. "Since me and Baz (Brendon McCullum) have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Chris Woakes played. Good to have him. "So, again, that just proves how valuable a cricketer is to any team that he turned out for. I think he, being the leader of the attack, is going to thrive off that responsibility. And, yeah, he's a quality critic, as you know, the relentless that he has with the ball, whether that be a new ball or a ball," he added. Stokes returned to competitive cricket last month after recovering from a left hamstring injury and is feeling "great" physically. "Physically, well, I mean, when I was 20, I didn't even know what stiffness or anything was. Obviously, now, 34, you know, everything is just naturally just a little bit harder to do," he said. "But I've worked hard to be where I am here today and, you know, physically where I'm at. It's great, you know, ready to go and just a bit more sensible, I guess, about my build-up. You know, work hard for, you know, the first two training days, two days out, and then, you know, sort of very, very chill than like the day before, just to make sure that everything is going to go come game day," Stokes added.

"Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni Aren't...": Kapil Dev's Unfiltered Rant On Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli's Absence
The day has almost arrived when Team India will square off against England in the first Test of the five-match series. This series will not only begin India's campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, but also start the transition phase in India's Test cricket. After the retirements of skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli, young batter Shubman Gill was promoted as India's new Test captain. Though the visitors side consists of many big names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and others, the fans are still concerned about the absence of Rohit and Kohli. Recently, India's 1983-World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev slammed the fans and urged them to move on from Rohit-Kohli era. He namedropped MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, and others and even requested the fans to back India's new look team. "Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble aren't there either. So, there's no point thinking about who isn't around," said Kapil Dev on Aaj Tak. "Yes, they will be missed, but we need to look at the next generation and be proud of them. Rohit has done his job; Virat has done his job. They made us proud, but let's see if the next generation of players can be bigger," he added. Notably, both Rohit and Kohli announced their respective Test retirments in May. Earlier in 2024, they also called time on their T20I careers. On the eve of the first Test in Leeds, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar advised Gill is to focus on his own planning without thinking about opinions outside the dressing room. "I think he (Gill) has to be given time. He has to be supported," Tendulkar told PTI in an exclusive interview on the eve of the opening Test in Headingley. Being Indian skipper is a high-pressure job and Tendulkar knows that varied opinions will fly thick and fast. But he expects Gill to have a tunnel vision. "I feel there are going to be a lot of opinions that 'he should do this and he should do that'. And all those kind of things will come into play. But what he should be focused on is, what is the team's plan. What was the discussion in the dressing room. And is it going according to that? "And all the decisions that are being made, are being made in the interest of the team or not, is what he should be thinking the outside world where someone feels that he is being too attacking or he is being too defensive and all that. Those are opinions and people will give opinions."

Rohit, Virat, Ashwin retirements mark start of transition for Indian Test team, says Sachin Tendulkar
Leeds [UK], June 19 (ANI): As India prepares to face England in the high-stakes Test series starting June 20, the shock retirement announcements of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin have sparked widespread debate. While fans mourn the end of an era, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar offered a grounded perspective, emphasising the natural progression of generational shifts in Indian cricket. Tendulkar, speaking on the development, acknowledged the emotional void left by the trio but maintained that the process of transition is nothing new to Indian cricket. 'We are going through a transitional phase in the Indian team. There are young faces, and some of the senior players are still around to guide them and this churning process will continue for years to come. It has been going on for decades,' he said. Drawing from personal experience, the Master Blaster recalled how similar changes have occurred in the past, when his own generation passed the baton. 'At some stage, the players have to retire, and at some stage, the new faces replace them, and they start their journey. Even when we were playing, be it Sehwag (Virender), Ganguly (Sourav), Dravid (Rahul), Laxman (VVS), myself, Anil Kumble, Yuvraj (Singh), or Dhoni (MS), at some stage, we all retired and the next generation took over,' Tendulkar added. 'So, it will continue, this process and I have no doubt that the new generation is talented,' he noted. Tendulkar also expressed confidence in the talent pool available in India, calling for patience and faith in the newcomers. 'As far as skill is concerned, in our country there are so many skilful players. I hope they make the most of the opportunity given to them,' he added. Reflecting on the retirements of Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin, Sachin was clear-eyed but appreciative. 'So, that process, what you said about Virat and Rohit and I'll add another name to that, Ashwin has also retired. These three retirements, I mean, that will go on. Their contribution will always be appreciated,' he noted. India tour of England will take place from June 20 to August 4, 2025, with matches to be played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). A new era beckons for India in the Test format as the modern-day giants gear up for their first assignment without the prized batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill, India's youngest Test captain, has taken the baton from Rohit to guide the nation to success and challenge for the World Test Championship mace. India's squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana. England Playing XI for the 1st Test against India: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir. High Court raps Maharashtra for delay in opposing bail in suicide abetment case
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Maharashtra government for failing to challenge a bail order on time while opposing bail to another accused on grounds of parity in a case of abetment of suicide. The court granted bail to Chetan Patil, who faced the case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The other co-accused in the case had already been granted Amit Borkar, hearing Patil's bail plea, strongly criticised the state government for procedural delays, saying, 'Mere intention or contemplation to file an appeal against a bail order does not automatically dilute the legal effect or binding nature of such an order unless and until it is paused, modified or set aside by a higher forum.'Patil, along with three others, is accused of assaulting a man and abetting his suicide. The case was registered in Thane district. The alleged incident occurred on January 29, 2023, when the informant received a call from his brother, claiming that Patil and his associates had assaulted him and extorted money using a metal seiser. The assault reportedly caused panic in the locality, leading shopkeepers and residents to shut their shops out of next day, one of the co-accused allegedly threatened the victim against approaching the police. On January 31, 2023, the victim was found dead by suicide, and a note recovered from the scene named one Dhiraj, allegedly accompanied by Rohit and Patil, as responsible for the earlier Rohit was already granted bail, Patil's lawyer, advocate Nitin Sejpal, sought bail on Public Prosecutor Pallavi Dabholkar opposed the plea, saying the state government was in the process of challenging Rohit's bail and requested the court to defer Patil's hearing until the matter was this submission, the court observed, 'Merely saying that a proposal is 'under consideration' is not sufficient to deprive another similarly situated accused of the benefit of parity.'Justice Borkar underscored that a proper appeal must follow a clear process, noting, 'There is a well-defined procedure to challenge an order passed by this court. If an officer of the prosecution department or police department believes that the said order deserves to be challenged, such an opinion must be translated into a concrete proposal.""This proposal must contain logical and justifiable reasons, supported by the record, and must be submitted to the Law and Judiciary Department of the Maharashtra government within a reasonable time," he Borkar emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in administrative decisions."It is expected that the officer or authority who considers such a proposal at the government level should pass a reasoned order either granting or refusing permission to file such an appeal. A bare, one-line note saying that permission is 'not necessary' cannot be considered sufficient compliance," he said."Judicial accountability and transparency in administrative decision-making demand that the order rejecting such a proposal must reflect application of mind and record reasons which indicate consideration of the facts of the case. Such reasoning forms the bedrock of the doctrine of fairness in administrative law," he Watch IN THIS STORY#Maharashtra
