Canadian icebreaker ready to clear path for Seaway opening

Mar. 18—Some much needed icebreaking between the U.S. and Canada — literally speaking — will begin Thursday when a Canadian Coast Guard vessel leaves port and heads west on the St. Lawrence Seaway.
"We will start the opening of the Montreal to Lake Ontario section in two days with an icebreaker from the Quebec region," Guillaume Paradis, Icebreaking Superintendent for the Canadian Coast Guard's Central Region said Tuesday morning from his base in Montreal.
The ship is the medium icebreaker Pierre Radisson, launched in 1977 and named after Pierre-Esprit Radisson (1636-1710), an explorer in "New France," which was a French colonial territory in North America. It can plow through ice a meter (3.2 feet) thick.
The 322-foot Pierre Raddison, Paradis said, is scheduled to be at St. Lambert Locks in Montreal at 8 a.m. Thursday. "They will head west and break ice in certain areas. There is ice near Cape Vincent."
The icebreaker should be in the Cape Vincent area on Saturday, which is also the day that the St. Lawrence Seaway is scheduled to open for the season.
Despite abundant ice coverage on the St. Lawrence River that hasn't been seen in years, Paradis expects that the Pierre Raddison will be able to break through it all. Ice is most heavy east of Massena, especially at Lake Saint Francis, which is fully covered, Paradis said. The lake is just east of the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.
But in general, Paradis said, "With the warmer temperatures between Cape Vincent and Montreal, they should be all right."
Cape Vincent is where Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River meet. It's very rare for Lake Ontario to freeze over because of its depth. Paradis said his main concern involving ice coverage and thickness is near the Welland Canal. The canal, an important link in the Seaway, provides navigation for large vessels between Lake Erie to the south and Lake Ontario to the north.
"We have a Coast Guard ship that will do reconnaissance later this week, so we will have a good idea of the ice condition there," Paradis said. An option is to send a bigger icebreaker to deal with that ice if needed.
Icebreaking on the St. Lawrence River and some of the Great Lakes is part of Operation Coal Shovel, a seasonal icebreaking effort between the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards as the nations' icebreakers work together. Operation Taconite, another Coast Guard icebreaking operation, takes place in the northern Great Lakes.
"We try to work as one Coast Guard, and it's working very well," Paradis said.

Of course, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. Her shows have been filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. Paris will be her last international stop before she returns to the U.S. Here's what to know as fans head to the French stadium. Logistics, how to get to Stade de France Stadium The venue is considered the largest stadium in France with an 80,698-person capacity. Stade de France is located at 93200 Saint-Denis, France. It is easily accessible many ways, including by public transportation, car or bike. The concerts will be during a busy time in Paris, as other festivals such as the Fête de la Musique are set to take place in the city. There will be an increase in traffic and interruptions from June 20 to July 10. Fans should find the best form of public transportation depending on their entrance gate. The concert is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time, though Beyoncé has been kicking the off closer to 8:00 p.m. Stadium doors will open at 5:30 p.m. What's the weather in Paris, France? From the United States to Europe, Beyoncé and her fans have braved severe weather conditions, an evacuation, cold temperatures and rainy weather for her concerts. Fans should take note of the weather in their respective cities before putting on their chic cowboy core attire. In Paris, fans can expect sunny skies and hot temperatures. It's important to stay hydrated before and during the nearly three-hour show. Forecasts predict high temperatures in the upper 80s for the June 19 and June 21 concerts. Meanwhile, the June 22 show is expected to be a scorching 92 degrees Fahrenheit. Important parking information Fans should purchase parking ahead of the show. According to the stadium's official site, there will be no parking sold on event days. Prohibited items Stade de France stadium Like many stadiums around the world, there are a number of prohibited inside the venue. Fans are not allowed to bring large umbrellas with a pointed metal part, computers, tablets, suitcases of any size, any bag larger than size A4, which is equivalent to 8.27 inches × 11.7 inches or a standard sheet of paper. Banners, badges or signs for political, ideological, philosophical or commercial purposes are not permitted. Of course, any objects that may be used to build a weapon or threaten public safety are not allowed. In particular some of these items include sharp objects, helmets, rigid and large diameter flag poles, bottles of water larger than 50 cl or 16.9 ounces. The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. Thousands impacted as torrential rains trigger mudslides: 'The impacts are expected to increase'

China's Yunnan province was struck at the start of June by devastating flooding that impacted nearly 5,000 residents and trapped more than 600 tourists. Torrential rains soaked southwestern China during the country's Dragon Boat Festival, a long holiday weekend celebrated this year from May 31 through June 2. The intense rain fell in Yunnan, which borders Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. Local authorities had issued a red alert, the highest level of four in China's four-colored warning system, before the deluge arrived. The flooding rains triggered mudslides and destroyed buildings and bridges in the region. Fortunately, no casualties were reported despite 4,800 residents in Gongshan County being impacted by the severe weather. Some popular hiking sites in the mountainous region had their road access cut off during the flooding. An evacuated four-story building on the Dulong River, which reached record levels during the flooding, collapsed, according to state broadcaster CCTV, per Reuters. Our warming world is altering the water cycle. "Climate change is likely causing parts of the water cycle to speed up as warming global temperatures increase the rate of evaporation worldwide. More evaporation is causing more precipitation, on average," according to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. "We are already seeing impacts of higher evaporation and precipitation rates, and the impacts are expected to increase over this century as climate warms." Our overheating planet is supercharging storms. Climate Central discovered that many U.S. cities (88% of the 144 analyzed) have experienced an increase in hourly rainfall intensity since 1970. In another study, Climate Central scientists found that our overheating planet increased wind speeds for every Atlantic hurricane last year. Another flooding event made headlines in late May, just a few days prior to the Yunnan event. A storm produced a deadly deluge in New South Wales, Australia, killing at least five people and leaving an estimated 50,000 people stranded. "Climate change is increasing the risk of landslides," according to French geophysicist Gilles Grandjean, per the Paris Polytechnic Institute. Even though the direct role our planet's rising temperatures have on landslides is difficult to pinpoint, "as climate change affects precipitation (by increasing the frequency of extreme events), it also has an impact on the risk of landslides," added Grandjean. Scientists say our warming atmosphere is acting like steroids for our world's weather. Cooling our planet by moving away from dirty energy and adopting renewable options is the best way to counter this effect. New research from scientists in Germany and the United Kingdom has shown how small, hydrogen-powered boats could significantly lower carbon pollution from Europe's transportation sector. Chinese researchers may be close to a major breakthrough that would mark a significant advancement in solid-state batteries, which many say is the "holy grail" for green tech. We can become advocates for the future of our planet by learning about critical climate issues and raising awareness about them through discussions with friends and family.
