CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Monday, Apr. 28, 2025, people gathered in Morehead City to take part in a Take Back the Night walk to support survivors of sexual assault.
The walk went through Morehead City with people holding up signs to show support for survivors of sexual assault.
'This is our fourth-annual Tack Back the Night Walk. We hold those walks to bring awareness to sexual assault in our communities and it's a good way to let people know who we are and what we do,' Carteret Speak Director Vicki Wank said. 'Sexual assault does happen in every community and so, this is a great way to bring it to light and with our new name of Carter Speak, remind people that we speak up for survivors and speak out against sexual violence.'
The Carteret Speak Program provides a number of resources.
'All of our services are completely free and confidential. There's no insurance, no eligibility. Everything is free and confidential,' Wank said. 'We provide licensed clinical therapy sessions for survivors of sexual assault. We have victim advocates who will assist victims at the hospital through court proceedings, interviews with law enforcement and we also have support groups for survivors of sexual assault. Our support groups meet on the first and third Monday evenings of each month from 6 p.m. to 7:30.'
Wank said anyone can become a victim of sexual assault and it can happen in many ways.
'But it knows no socioeconomic class, race, sex, religion, it's everybody who experiences some form of sexual assault in their families, in their communities,' she said. 'And we want people to know it's okay to reach out to us. If anybody needs our services, they can reach us at (252)-504-3668.'
Carteret SPEAK also has advocacy and volunteer opportunities available.

Give Blood: Save A Life, Boost Yours

WACO and TYLER, TX (FOX 44) — We are a day away from your chance to save a life through the FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive! The event will take place this Friday at the FOX 44 parking lot, located at 8803 Woodway Drive, from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. For as long as supplies last, each donor will receive a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream – 'A Pint for a Pint'. 'It's a win-win for the donor and the patient, mainly because you're helping someone's life,' said Clinton McCoy, Carter BloodCare's Director of Mobile Recruitment and Regional Operations. 'The great thing is you get a great mini-physical. We're going to check your blood pressure, your pulse, we're going to check your hemoglobin levels, check your temperature. You get that free cholesterol check. You get the free health checkup, you feel good after donating, and you get free juice and cookies – which is always a positive in my world.' Then there's the impact you will have on the lives you'll help save. McCoy shared with me a story that impacts him to this day. 'We were talking with one of our hospital partners, and they're expanding facilities, and they're [like], 'Hey, want to make sure we have blood at this hospital,' and we're talking through the operations, the logistics, the business side of how do get that done,' McCoy said. ''In that moment,' that lab director said, 'You know, I just want to say thank y'all.' And I said, 'You're welcome. I'm happy to do this work for you.' She said, 'No, thank you – because this weekend we had a patient come in, young patient came in, gunshot wound, used over 175 units of blood. One patient, and he is still alive – because your team was able to get us every single unit we ordered.' She said, 'Y'all made probably 15 to 20 trips in two days just for this one patient, and that means a lot.'' Pitt County wants to educate residents during National Mosquito Control Awareness Week

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — This week is National Mosquito Control Awareness Week and Pitt County is speaking out. The county wants to remind residents about the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and aims to educate on how to stay safe from them. Officials also mentioned to not tailgate mosquito management trucks, as they play a key role in mosquito control operations. 'For your safety and ours, we urge all drivers to maintain a safe distance behind our mosquito management trucks,' says Amanda Morrison, Pitt County Vector Control Program Manager. 'These vehicles may stop or slow suddenly, and treatments may be released into the air. Tailgating puts you at risk and disrupts our efforts to protect public health.' For general tips on how to prevent the circulation of mosquito-borne diseases, it is recommended to adhere to the three D's of protection: drain, dress and defend. Drain standing water, dispose of old tires, clean out gutters and drains and clean pet water dishes and bird baths regularly. Dress is light colored, loose fitting clothing and opt for long shirt and pant sleeve when outdoors. Defend with insect repellents and staying informed. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — ECU Health is partnering with Food Lion Feeds to provide summer meals for children and teens. Starting today, Wednesday, June 11, free meals are available Monday through Thursday at their different meal sites in Greenville, Ahoskie, Bethel, and Tarboro. They were at York Memorial AME Zion Church in Greenville today. 'We understand and we know that children, some children, don't have access to food once they leave the school during the summer,' Associate Minister at York Memorial AME Zion Church in Greenville, Janie Rouse, said. 'You know, they no longer have breakfast or lunch. And we're excited about offering them a lunch during the summer.' In 2024, 3,502 meals were served across the East. 'Our previous years, we have seen a lot of children as well as other community members come to our sites,' Community Health Project Consultant at ECU Health Alexis Connell said. 'Thankfully, this year we were able to expand to a four-site and in the future we hope to continue to expand to different sites in our community.' Meals will be available until food runs out each day at the following locations: Greenville: English Chapel Free Will Baptist Church – 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday-Friday from June 10 to Aug. 23.
