As Pulp release their first album in 24 years, the band talk about returning to the studio

Pulp have returned with a new album, their first in 24 years. Who could've predicted that?

Not even the band, it turns out. 'It took us by surprise as well,' dynamic frontman Jarvis Cocker said. 'Why not?'
If there are casual Pulp fans, they do not make themselves known. The ambitious Britpop-and-then-some band emerged in the late 1970s in Sheffield, England, artistic outsiders with a penchant for the glam, grim, and in the case of Cocker, the gawky.
Fame eluded them until the mid-90s, and then it rushed in with the trend of Cool Britannia.

Their songs varied wildly from their contemporaries, like the recently reunited Blur and soon-to-be back together Oasis. Instead, Pulp's David Bowie-informed synth-pop arrived with humour, ambiguity and intellect – songs about sex and class consciousness that manage to be groovy, glib, awkward and amorous all at once.

US singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty in London nightclub assault case

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty on Friday to a charge related to the serious beating of a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and black-rimmed glasses, was arraigned in London's Southwark Crown Court on one count of attempting to unlawfully and maliciously cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Brown's friend and fellow musician Omololu Akinlolu, 39, who performs under the name 'Hoody Baby' pleaded not guilty to the same charge. Prosecutors previously said Brown and Akinlolu assaulted producer Abe Diaw at a bar in the Tape nightclub in the swanky Mayfair neighbourhood in February 2023. Brown allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on Diaw and hit him several times with a bottle and then punched and kicked him. The attack was caught on surveillance camera in front of a club full of people, prosecutors said. Brown was originally charged with a single count of grievous bodily harm after his arrest in May, but prosecutors subsequently brought an indictment adding two counts: assault causing actual bodily harm and having an offensive weapon, a bottle.

28 Years Later's Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Danny Boyle on the horror sequel

British horror film 28 Days Later by director Danny Boyle was a surprise hit in 2002 and soon became a milestone in the genre. Five years on came the sequel 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Now, Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are back with a third installment, 28 Years Later – the first in a possible trilogy. 'I think what had happened was we both had a very particular affection for the original film,' Garland said. 'That also means you want to protect it as well as continue to explore it.' 28 Weeks Later screenwriter Alex Garland.
