Police record bus owner's statement over fatal UPSI crash on JRTB highway
IPOH, June 12 — The owner of the bus involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students along the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, last Monday, has given a statement to the police.
Acting Gerik district police chief DSP Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said the bus company owner turned up at the Gerik district police headquarters at 10.30 pm yesterday.
'The bus owner spent about an hour and a half giving a statement regarding the accident,' he told Bernama today.
Yesterday, Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said that so far, statements have been recorded from 18 witnesses, including several UPSI students involved in the crash.
The 15 UPSI students were killed when their chartered bus, travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned in a collision with a Perodua Alza.
The crash also injured 33 others, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — Bernama

SERDANG, June 23 (Bernama) -- Police have arrested 10 individuals believed to be involved in a foreign currency investment scam that caused losses amounting to RM399,787, in a raid at a premises in Bandar Puteri, Puchong last Friday. Sepang police chief ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the suspects, comprising seven men and three women aged between 21 and 38, were believed to have assumed various roles, including managers, platform developers, customer service agents and administrators handling company documents. He said initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for the past six months, targeting both local and foreign victims. 'The syndicate allegedly offered lucrative returns on initial investments to gain victims' trust to continue investing through a self-developed app. 'It operated under two unregistered companies, and police are currently investigating another company believed to have been used to facilitate fund transfers from victims,' he told a press conference today. Muhamad Farid said checks on the application revealed a total of 2,597 individuals believed to have fallen victim to the scam, comprising 2,482 Malaysians, 111 Indonesians and one each from India, Mongolia, South Africa and Bhutan. 'During the raid, police seized three computer monitors, two CPUs, six laptops, 14 mobile phones and a Wi-Fi modem, all believed to have been used in the illegal operations, with a total seizure value estimated at RM45,000,' he said. He said none of the suspects had prior criminal records and all tested negative for drugs. 'The suspects were initially remanded for one day and released on police bail, but have since been re-arrested in connection with a report lodged in Taman Melawati,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act 2013.

Johor Police Smash Drug Trafficking Syndicate, Seize Drugs Worth Over RM7.1 Mln
JOHOR BAHRU, June 22 (Bernama) -- Johor Police have successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate believed to have been active since the beginning of this year through two separate raids in residential areas around Johor Bahru, with the value of the seizure estimated to exceed RM7.1 million. Johor police chief CP Datuk M Kumar said the special operation was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Johor police contingent headquarters with Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, at about 7.30 pm, between June 14 and 15. He said that in the first raid at a two-storey terrace house in Taman Mutiara Rini, police arrested a 45-year-old local man believed to be the mastermind along with a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'As a result of the inspection, police seized 2.67 kilogrammes of powder believed to be ecstasy and 368 grammes of drugs suspected to be marijuana,' he said in a press conference today. Following the arrest, police launched a second raid on another terrace house about a kilometre from the first location, which had also been rented by the same male suspect since May 2024 and arrested a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'In this second raid, police seized 38 kg of ecstasy powder and 1.37 kg of ketamine,' he said. In both raids, police also seized two cars worth RM190,000, cash RM49,150 and various jewellery worth RM17,630, with the total seizure amounting to RM265,615. He said the two foreign women were believed to have entered the country legally, but further investigations were being conducted into their travel documents. The syndicate is believed to operate in an organised manner, including using social media and delivery via 'runners' and police believe there are still members at large out there and investigations are underway to track them down.

Home Ministry to investigate false IGP infographic, Saifuddin Nasution warns of serious consequences for misleading reporting
PUTRAJAYA, June 23 — The Home Ministry (KDN) will investigate a recent erroneous infographic on the 15th Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, published by a local Malay daily. Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry will look into the matter from all angles, including potential legal action or direct engagement with the media involved. 'If necessary, we will summon them for clarification and take the opportunity to convey how false and irresponsible reporting can have serious implications. 'However, any action taken should not be construed as the government undermining media freedom,' he told reporters after attending the ministry's monthly assembly today. While expressing strong regret over the report, which claimed that the IGP was a member of the PKR Central Leadership Council, Saifuddin Nasution also described the mistake as serious, as it involved the reputation of the highest-ranking officer in the country's largest enforcement agency. 'The facts presented were obviously incorrect. The biodata profile included all of Datuk Seri Khalid's past experiences, with an apparent intention to insert misleading information, despite the police having already issued an official and verified profile,' he said. The minister stressed that an established media outlet should understand journalistic discipline, especially the obligation to verify facts, all the more crucial when reporting on a senior police officer with decades of service. 'Surely some effort should have been made to verify the facts. At a time when political divisions and hate sentiments are intensifying, such irresponsible reporting is like wildfire in a dry season,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution also criticised the media outlet's casual explanation that the error was unintentional, saying it failed to acknowledge the significant consequences. 'How do they intend to contain a viral wildfire that fuels hatred? What choice do we have? If we take stern action, then our Madani Government will be accused of being a government that disrespects media freedom. 'But freedom must include the responsibility to report verified facts, not to spread lies that erode public trust in the police institution and tarnish the reputation of the new IGP. The consequences are substantial,' he said. On June 20, the media outlet in question published an infographic linking the IGP to the PKR leadership, which caused widespread public confusion.
