Police record bus owner's statement over fatal UPSI crash on JRTB highway
IPOH, June 12 — The owner of the bus involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students along the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, last Monday, has given a statement to the police. Acting Gerik district police chief DSP Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said the bus company owner turned up at the Gerik district police headquarters at 10.30 pm yesterday. 'The bus owner spent about an hour and a half giving a statement regarding the accident,' he told Bernama today. Yesterday, Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said that so far, statements have been recorded from 18 witnesses, including several UPSI students involved in the crash. The 15 UPSI students were killed when their chartered bus, travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned in a collision with a Perodua Alza. The crash also injured 33 others, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — Bernama

Wife, daughter of MPV driver still in hospital, son discharged after Gerik collision with UPSI student bus
BALING, June 10 — The wife and six-year-old daughter of a Perodua Alza driver involved in a fatal crash with a bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students remain warded at Baling Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Kedah Housing, Local Government and Health Committee chairman Mansor Zakaria said the driver, 37-year-old Mohd Lutfi Radzi, and his two-year-old son, Muhammad Ahsan Nafis Mohd Lutfi, had been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment. The wife, Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36, and their daughter, Nur Aisyah Nafishah will also be referred to the orthopaedic department for further treatment, he said when contacted yesterday. The chartered bus, which was transporting UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with the Alza in the early hours of Monday near Gerik. The crash claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students, all aged between 21 and 23. — Bernama

Family of four in MPV survive collision with UPSI bus; driver discharged, wife and kids still hospitalised
BALING, June 9 — A family of four that occupied the Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle involved in the deadly bus crash on the East-West Highway early this morning are currently being treated at Baling Hospital. The driver of the vehicle, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, sustained only minor injuries and has been discharged, Berita Harian reported this afternoon. His wife, Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36, and their two children – six-year-old Nur Aisyah Nafishah and two-year-old Muhammad Ahsan Nafis – remain in hospital but are reported to be in stable condition. The collision occurred at about 1am near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, and involved a chartered bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and the Perodua Alza, said to be travelling in the same direction. The UPSI students were returning to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, from Jertih, Terengganu when the collision happened. Fifteen UPSI students were killed in the incident, while seven others were seriously injured.
