Iraq condemns Iran nuclear strikes without naming US

Iraqi News11 hours ago

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi government has issued a strong condemnation of the recent military strikes targeting nuclear facilities in Iran, warning of serious consequences for the Middle East and international security.
In an official statement, government spokesman Basim Alawadi expressed deep concern over the escalation, describing it as 'a grave threat to peace and security in the Middle East' and a risk to regional stability.
Notably, the statement did not mention the United States, which is widely believed to have carried out the strikes.
Iraq reaffirmed its opposition to the use of force in international relations, emphasizing the importance of respecting national sovereignty and safeguarding critical infrastructure, particularly nuclear facilities used for peaceful purposes and overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Alawadi stressed that 'military action can never serve as a substitute for dialogue and diplomacy,' warning that continued attacks could trigger a dangerous regional escalation with global repercussions.
The statement concluded with a call for immediate de-escalation and the urgent opening of diplomatic channels to contain the crisis, in line with international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

Iraq, Turkey discuss oil exports resumption through Ceyhan

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, discussed on Sunday the resumption of Iraqi Kurdistan's oil exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan. The two ministers met on the sidelines of their participation in the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in the Turkish city of Istanbul, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. Hussein stressed the need to expedite technical and administrative procedures to resume oil flows from the Kurdistan region of Iraq to Ceyhan. Due to financial and legal issues, crude oil shipments through the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline, which previously accounted for approximately 0.5 percent of the world's oil supply, have been suspended since March 2023. After the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris ruled that Ankara had violated a 1973 treaty by permitting oil exports without the approval of the federal government in Baghdad, oil flows via the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline were stopped. The ruling obligated Turkey to pay Baghdad $1.5 billion in compensation for losses caused by the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) illegal oil exports between 2014 and 2018. Earlier in March, negotiations to restart oil flows from Iraqi Kurdistan through the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline failed for the second time in a week. This setback was attributed to ongoing disagreements between oil companies and the Iraqi Oil Ministry, according to Reuters. In February, Hussein revealed that Baghdad is collaborating with the KRG to resolve technical issues and resume crude oil exports to Turkey, which had been suspended for almost two years and cost Iraq around $19 billion in lost revenue. The legislative structure is in place, but before oil flows can restart, oil firms, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and the federal government need to resolve technical issues, Hussein told Bloomberg.

Second Iran-Iraq FM meeting since regional escalation

Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to address the escalating regional tensions, especially the recent US strikes targeting key nuclear facilities in Iran. In a statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the talks — held on the sidelines of the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul — marked the second meeting between the two ministers since the start of the current crisis. Araghchi outlined the consequences of the attacks in detail and confirmed that Tehran is preparing a series of retaliatory steps, revealing Iran's plan to request an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, backed by Russia. Hussein emphasized the need to activate the open-ended ministerial contact group—an Iraqi initiative under the OIC framework—aimed at containing the crisis, opening channels for dialogue, and paving the way for peaceful solutions to avert further escalation.

Iraq reiterates rejection of airspace violation amid Israel-Iran conflict

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, reiterated on Saturday his rejection of the violation of his country's airspace by Israel to launch attacks against Iran. Al-Sudani's remarks took place during his meeting with the British Ambassador to Iraq, Irfan Siddiq, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where they discussed the latest developments in the region as well as prospects for joint cooperation and strategies to strengthen bilateral ties in different fields to serve the interests of the two countries, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Al-Sudani also emphasized Israel's ongoing aggression against Iran poses a threat to international peace and security. Al-Sudani urged major countries, particularly UN Security Council members, to take a role in preventing Israel's assault against Iran and its daily atrocities in Gaza, underlining the need to deliver humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip. Iraq's representative to the United Nations, Abbas Kazim Obaid, revealed on Friday that 50 Israeli warplanes violated Iraqi airspace ahead of a UN meeting on the conflict between Israel and Iran. Since June 13, Israel has started launching a series of airstrikes and attacks on Iranian military sites and nuclear facilities. Dozens of Iranian military leaders have been assassinated in these attacks. Iran retaliated with missile and drone assaults against Israel, promising more.
