By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: SANDAKAN Forwarding Association organised a dialogue with Sandakan Lorry Hire Association, Sandakan Shipping Association and Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce with Sabah Ports at Karamunting office, in Sandakan, recently. Chong Thien Ming, Deputy Chairman for Sandakan Lorry Hire Association as well as Sandakan Forwarding Association, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to regulate a better procedure in time- and cost-saving for agents and customers. Chong added that the meeting was fruitful and Sabah Ports thoroughly understands the associations' intention to push for better facilities and efficiency. Chong also proposed for a meeting every three months on related matters, adding that the district's economy is showing signs of recovery. SME meet draws over 400 participants

Kota Kinabalu: Over 400 participants from across Malaysia, including SME owners, industry leaders, and professionals, attended the SME Sabah 2025 Conference, here, on Friday. The full-day event, themed 'Mastering Sustainability & Empowering the Change', was officiated by State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. SME Sabah President Dr Deledda Tan said the conference aimed to equip businesses with practical strategies while strengthening their role in the State's economic growth. 'We want participants to walk away recharged, equipped with actionable insights and meaningful connections,' she said. Dr Deledda also announced that SME Sabah is now a certified HRD Corporation training provider, giving members access to structured development programmes. The event is recognised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), with attendees eligible for 6.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours. Advertisement Organising Chairman Sunny Chai said the conference tackled key issues like ESG compliance, workplace safety, and staff retention. 'We want our SMEs to not only grow but remain resilient and sustainable in a fast-evolving market,' he said. Among the speakers were AirAsia CEO Dato' Captain Fareh Mazputra, Professor Cheah Kok Hoong, Datuk Javern Lim and Assoc Prof Dr Saihpuddin Saupin, who shared insights on sustainable business leadership. Chamber to act as a bridge

This was expressed by Datuk Frankie Liew President of the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, during an exchange session held at the SCCC conference Room with a 14-member delegation from China led by President Zhang Huaxia of the Hui Gong Cultural Committee of China (Zhang Clan Association of China) and the Beijing Hui Gong Cultural Development Centre (Zhang Clan Association of Beijing). Liew said the meeting was more than a cultural exchange — it also symbolised the deep kinship between the two associations and celebrated the grand opening of the new Sabah Zhang Clan Association building. Chong urges S'wak govt to prioritise financial aid over mega projects
Chong offers DAP's official magazine, The Rocket during the walkabout. KUCHING (June 22):Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen has urged the state government to prioritise easing the financial burden on low- and middle-income groups rather than allocating funds for mega projects. The Padungan assemblyman and Stampin MP made this call after receiving feedback from the local community during a walkabout in Gala City and Premier 101 commercial centres here yesterday. Chong said people are struggling financially amid the current economic situation. 'The Sarawak government should focus on how to improve our economy and increase the income sources for our low- and middle-income families. 'This is not the time to give priority to the development of mega projects that involve billions of ringgit,' he said after the event, which also saw him promoting DAP's official magazine, The Rocket. Chong said the DAP is not against the state government implementing development projects, but many of those mega projects 'do not seem to directly benefit the people as in increasing their income'. He cited these projects as the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, the Second Trunk Road project, and the construction of a Deep-Sea Port and a new Kuching International Airport. He said enormous funds are required to make these projects happen and this does not help the low- and middle-income groups, who are facing financial difficulties. According to him, people worry more about whether these large-scale projects would benefit them directly. 'Not only are these projects going to use up tonnes of taxpayers' money, but they do not help increase the income of most people. Money is never enough as far as most people are concerned,' he said. As such, Chong suggested that the state government shift its focus to developing the manufacturing sector in line with enhancing the state's productivity and increasing job opportunities for locals. He believed that this would directly increase household income in the state as well as bring Sarawak's economic level to new heights. Meanwhile, he thanked all those who had supported the DAP Sarawak by purchasing Rocket, hoping that more people would back the DAP to increase opposition voices in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN). At present, he said there are only two DAP elected representatives in the august House. 'Given this scenario, the checks and balances mechanism is as good as none. The only way to see a healthy democracy is by having more opposition members, especially from the DAP, in the House. 'This helps ensure that the government of the day will not approve budgets and implement projects as they wish,' added Chong.
