Chong urges S'wak govt to prioritise financial aid over mega projects

KUCHING (June 22):Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen has urged the state government to prioritise easing the financial burden on low- and middle-income groups rather than allocating funds for mega projects.
The Padungan assemblyman and Stampin MP made this call after receiving feedback from the local community during a walkabout in Gala City and Premier 101 commercial centres here yesterday.
Chong said people are struggling financially amid the current economic situation.
'The Sarawak government should focus on how to improve our economy and increase the income sources for our low- and middle-income families.
'This is not the time to give priority to the development of mega projects that involve billions of ringgit,' he said after the event, which also saw him promoting DAP's official magazine, The Rocket.
Chong said the DAP is not against the state government implementing development projects, but many of those mega projects 'do not seem to directly benefit the people as in increasing their income'.
He cited these projects as the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, the Second Trunk Road project, and the construction of a Deep-Sea Port and a new Kuching International Airport.
He said enormous funds are required to make these projects happen and this does not help the low- and middle-income groups, who are facing financial difficulties.
According to him, people worry more about whether these large-scale projects would benefit them directly.
'Not only are these projects going to use up tonnes of taxpayers' money, but they do not help increase the income of most people. Money is never enough as far as most people are concerned,' he said.
As such, Chong suggested that the state government shift its focus to developing the manufacturing sector in line with enhancing the state's productivity and increasing job opportunities for locals.
He believed that this would directly increase household income in the state as well as bring Sarawak's economic level to new heights.
Meanwhile, he thanked all those who had supported the DAP Sarawak by purchasing Rocket, hoping that more people would back the DAP to increase opposition voices in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).
At present, he said there are only two DAP elected representatives in the august House.
'Given this scenario, the checks and balances mechanism is as good as none. The only way to see a healthy democracy is by having more opposition members, especially from the DAP, in the House.
'This helps ensure that the government of the day will not approve budgets and implement projects as they wish,' added Chong.

House yet to decide on Gibran impeachment petition

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka (centre) attends the commemoration of Pancasila Day on June 1 at the Pancasila Building, a historic hall within the Foreign Ministry's compound in Jakarta. Pancasila Day celebrates Indonesia's national ideology based on five principles: Belief in one God, just and civilized humanity, national unity, democracy guided by the wisdom of people's representatives and social justice for all Indonesians. - Photo: AFP JAKARTA: The House of Representatives is still weighing whether to bring a petition to initiate impeachment proceedings against Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka filed by a group of retired Indonesian Military (TNI) generals to a plenary session that would mark the start of the legal process. The decision whether to bring the petition to a plenary session depends on the petition's substance, which will first be reviewed to see whether the aspiration is 'reasonable, rational and has political and legal legitimacy,' according to House Legislation Body (Baleg) deputy chair Ahmad Iman Sukri. 'We leave it to the House leadership. The debate is more political in nature, and political products always have political solutions,' the National Awakening Party (PKB) politician said on Friday (June 20), as quoted by adding that he had not read the retired general's letter. Ahmad made the statement as the House is expected to hold a plenary session on Tuesday to mark the start of its next sitting period. The legislature is currently in recess that will end on Monday. Earlier this month, a group known as the Retired TNI Soldiers Forum sent a letter to call on the leadership of the House and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to begin the legal process of removing Gibran from office. The group argued that Gibran's appointment was tainted by an ethics scandal over a Constitutional Court ruling that lowered the age threshold for candidates. The controversial decision, issued during the administration of Gibran's father, former president Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo, was authored by then-chief justice Anwar Usman, Jokowi's brother-in-law. The justice was later dismissed from the court's top seat for a serious violation of judicial ethics. The group also questioned Gibran's capability to serve as vice president, arguing that the former mayor of Surakarta in Central Java has become a burden to President Prabowo Subianto in carrying out the responsibilities of the state, rather than showing his capacity to assist the President. The forum's secretary Bimo Satrio confirmed the authenticity of the letter and said that former vice president and military general Try Sutrisno had 'given his blessing' for the group to proceed with the petition in late May, despite not having his name appear among the signatories. Several days after the legislative bodies received the retired generals' letter, House Deputy Speaker and Prabowo's Gerindra Party executive Sufmi Dasco Ahmad met with Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chair Megawati Soekarnoputri in the latter's private residence. Speaking after the meeting, Dasco, who is widely regarded as one of Prabowo's right-hand men, said that he had been sent by the President to deliver a confidential message to Megawati, and he had received a response to relay back to Prabowo in return. With the party's congress that was expected to be the occasion when it would define its political position toward Prabowo's administration, the PDI-P remains as the only de facto opposition party in the legislature, controlling 110 of 580 House seats. - The Jakarta Post/ANN

Stampin MP allocates RM230,000 to enhance facilities at SK St David

Chong distributes festive cookies to the locals. KUCHING (June 22): Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has announced a total allocation of RM230,000 for SK St David near Kampung Bumbok, aimed at creating a more conducive learning environment for its pupils. The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman said RM120,000 from his Member of Parliament (MP) fund will be used to purchase nine smart TVs for classroom use, supporting the school's teaching efforts. 'This is in line with the digitalisation agenda of the Ministry of Education (MoE) for all schools. While the Budget allocation for MoE is not sufficient to provide such facilities, I will complement it with my MP's allocation for the benefit of the students,' he said during a Gawai Dayak cum Father's Day celebration held in Kampung Bumbok last night. Chong also revealed that the remaining RM110,000, which DAP Sarawak had helped apply for last year, has been approved by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to upgrade the school's football field. He added that Padawan Municipal Council is the implementing agency for this project. Chong, who is also Padungan assemblyman, said he will continue to do his best in providing the best for his constituents, especially in education, although his MP fund is 20 per cent less than the Gabungan Parti Sarawak's (GPS) state assembly persons' total allocation for the Stampin parliamentary constituency. 'We shall continue to oversee the implementation of the project so that there will not be any delays,' he added. Chong Chieng Jen education school facilities SK St David

Umno ministers outperforming those from PKR and DAP, says Shahrir

Former Johor Bahru MP Shahrir Samad said PKR leaders have 'no real experience' in governing the country. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : An Umno veteran claims that ministers from his party are doing better than their fellow Cabinet members from DAP and PKR. Shahrir Samad, who had held several Cabinet posts, said it cannot be denied that Umno leaders serving as ministers in the Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government are performing better and more effectively compared with those from DAP and PKR, Utusan Malaysia reported. 'This is because Umno leaders are trained and shaped through a grassroots leadership development process, rising through the ranks over time,' he was quoted as saying in an interview with the daily. In contrast, he said, many leaders from PKR and DAP lack such experience. He cited how DAP leaders may have been in politics for a longer period and were expected to be more seasoned, but still fell short. Giving Lim Guan Eng as an example, Shahrir said the former DAP chairman did not always 'reflect maturity or wisdom in leadership' both as finance minister and Penang chief minister. 'PKR leaders, in particular, have no real governing experience. So, when they are appointed ministers, the country ends up in disarray,' he said. 'We even have situations where (their) ministers want to resign but first take leave, as if a political post was a corporate job that requires a three-month notice period. This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of political office. 'If you intend to resign, just resign. There's no need to take leave,' he said, claiming that the prime minister's decision to find a replacement or reshuffle the Cabinet was stalled because of such ministers taking leave. PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli resigned as the economy minister after he lost the party deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar last month. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Setiawangsa MP, also let go of his natural resources and environmental sustainability portfolio after he failed to defend his PKR vice-presidency. Both submitted their resignation letters on May 28 and went on leave – with Rafizi's leave ending on June 16, and Nik Nazmi's on July 3. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had expressed hope that the duo would reconsider their resignations, but both remained steadfast in their decisions.
