Iconic Fiat Panda 4x4 poised to make Grande all-electric comeback

The Citizen11-06-2025

Modern day version of old favourite is a blend of its rich heritage and new innovation.
Fiat's cute little go-anywhere Panda was to South African's what the Jimny is to Suzuki fans. Now it has been shown as the new Grande Panda 4×4 concept, a legendary icon reborn to capture the imagination of drivers around the world.
The next chapter in the legacy of the Italian brand is marked by a potential true symbol of versatility, reliability, and freedom on four wheels.
First launched in 1983, the Fiat Panda 4×4 quickly won over generations of enthusiasts by delivering a unique combination of practicality, comfort and elegance. All wrapped in a compact form capable of tackling any terrain.
Fiat Panda reborn
Think Suzuki Jimny again. Small on the outside, yet cleverly spacious on the inside. It offered everyday drivability paired with rugged off-road capability, embodying the ideal balance of city car and mountain climber. It was a revolution in motion: accessible, adaptable, and beloved by everyone.
With its eyes set firmly on the future, the new Grande Panda 4×4 project is destined to be a manifesto for a fresh vision of sustainable mobility. It is a vision rooted in innovation and in line with current dictates, while maintaining the characteristics that made it a global cult favourite.
Back in 2007 The Citizen Motoring accordingly had a Fiat Panda on test. It produced a mere 44kW of power and 102 Nm of torque from its 1 200cc naturally aspirated engine. But now, the Grande Panda 4×4 concept is powered with an electrified innovative rear axle.
Embracing sustainability
This feature would enable the vehicle to deliver impressive performance in urban settings and on more demanding terrain. It's a deliberate choice that underscores Fiat's ongoing commitment to embracing increasingly sustainable and forward-looking technologies. All while preserving the adventurous spirit and everyday practicality that have always defined the Panda 4×4.
The choice of materials and colours have been chosen to define the spirit of this Grande Panda 4×4 Concept model. It is all about the concept of freedom, adventure and desire to rediscover the connection the original had with nature. On the exterior, the iconic dark red colour has been reinterpreted in a modern key with a deep, enveloping Bordeaux. The beige details also dress the model with a nostalgic reference to the great 4×4 icon.

Blending heritage with innovation
The Grande Panda 4×4 Concept, which is now Fiat's potential next four-wheel drive is accessorised with two lamps on the roof rack in addition to those on the front. A list of even more accessories will likely be available if the vehicle comes into production.
With this modern reinterpretation of the Fiat Panda 4×4, the carmaker has reaffirmed its desire to blend heritage and innovation. It is in response to the needs of a changing mobility landscape while not losing sight of the model's authentic and deeply popular soul.

Setting a new benchmark in the category, Engen Xtreme delivers real value to mechanics, petrolheads, and motorists who demand high-performance lubrication solutions. 'Our goal is to provide South Africans with a high-performance lubricant that exceeds their expectations.' A premium look for a premium product The new Engen Xtreme packaging delivers more than visual impact. It is engineered for both the workshop and the consumer, with improved handling, impactful labelling, and built-in anti-counterfeit features that prioritise confidence and convenience. 'Engen Xtreme is more than an update to the label — it's a renewed promise to deliver premium protection in a proudly South African product, for South Africans,' adds Melissa Graham, Indirect Sales Marketing Manager at Engen. 'This relaunch celebrates our commitment to performance, innovation, and packaging that speaks directly to the needs of South African mechanics and motorists alike.' Built for South African roads — and South African pros With the average age of vehicles on South African roads around eleven years, many cars still rely on internal combustion engines. Engen Xtreme is specifically formulated to protect high-mileage engines while meeting the requirements of modern European, Asian, and African car brands. Available in Standard S8, Premium S10, and Prestige S15 grades, Engen Xtreme lubricants provide superior protection against wear and corrosion, keeping engines clean and efficient. The advanced formulation sustains maximum oil and engine performance, even as the oil ages, improving power conversion and fuel savings. 'As vehicle engine design advances and fuel efficiency becomes a priority, the new Xtreme range has evolved to meet these demands,' says Mario Vester, Engen's automotive product manager. 'Using the latest lubricant technology, it guarantees quality for everything from trusted high-mileage workhorses to modern high-performance vehicles, ensuring superior protection and peace of mind.' Designed for South African conditions Engen Xtreme remains a 100% tested, locally manufactured lubricant produced in KwaZulu-Natal. Its formulations are designed to withstand South Africa's unique driving conditions – from congested urban traffic to extreme temperatures and rugged terrain – ensuring optimal performance no matter the journey. 'We understand the challenges South African motorists face, from fluctuating temperatures to stop-start traffic,' notes Vester. 'That's why Engen Xtreme is tailored to deliver the best possible protection for everything that South African roads can throw at a car.' New packaging, same trusted quality As part of the rebrand, Engen Xtreme features modernised packaging designed for usability and sustainability. The packaging includes anti-counterfeiting measures, enhanced dispensing mechanisms, and clearer labelling, making it easier for mechanics and vehicle owners to identify and use the right product with confidence. The bottles now include Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials, reflecting Engen's drive toward sustainable innovation. Durable, functional and future-ready, the updated packaging supports responsible manufacturing without compromising performance. Commitment to local manufacturing Engen Xtreme lubricants have been proudly manufactured in South Africa for over 25 years, reinforcing Engen's long-standing investment in local production. This commitment delivers world-class lubrication solutions – made by South Africans, for South African professionals. A strong start The reimagined Engen Xtreme range was introduced at a high-impact showcase event at The Galleria in Sandton, where industry professionals, mechanics, and key media were treated to an immersive product experience. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with Engen's technical specialists during a live panel discussion and view hands-on product demonstrations that highlighted formulation and packaging innovations. With its bold new identity and evolved formulation, the Engen Xtreme relaunch has set the tone for a strong brand presence in 2025 – one built to go the distance in performance, protection, and local pride. The new Engen Xtreme lubricants are now available at authorised Engen retailers and service stations nationwide. #EngenXtreme #ProudlySouthAfrican

Kyalami in pole position for South Africa GP return in 2028

The FIA has given Kyalami three years to complete upgrades to host a South Africa GP in 2028. Image: File The return of a long-talked-about F1 South Africa GP made major strides this week. The former South Africa GP host circuit, located just North of Johannesburg, has staged no less than 21 F1 races up until its last in 1993. ADVERTISEMENT Nevertheless, Formula 1 is plainly keen to complete an expanded calendar. By reintegrating the African continent into its 24-race schedule, which has been missing for 32 years, F1 will truly become a 'world championship' once again … RETURN OF THE SOUTH AFRICA GP Government officials and circuit owners have lots to smile about at Kyalami. Image: File However, many names have been linked with a future African GP. In preceding months this has included Cape Town, Rwanda and even Morocco. Nevertheless, Kyalami currently has FIA Grade 2 status. But this week it had its plans for F1-ready 'Grade 1' certification approved by the FIA. In a statement by Kyalami GP Circuit owner, Toby Venter, he announced it has: 'Received confirmation that the FIA has accepted final design proposals. This will upgrade the circuit to Grade 1 status, which is the highest international standard required to host Formula 1. As such, once the capital works are completed and a final inspection conducted, Kyalami will become Africa's only FIA Grade 1 circuit, capable of hosting Formula 1 on the African continent,' said Venter. DEFINING MOMENT FOR SOUTH AFRICA Formula 1 looked very different when it last raced at Kyalami 32-years ago. Image: File Furthermore, Venter reiterated at the South Africa GP press conference: 'This is truly a defining moment for South African motorsport. Very little work needs to be done to achieve the Grade 1 rubber-stamp for Kyalami. I would describe it as a light-touch upgrade,' said Venter. ADVERTISEMENT 'Likewise, the FIA has given Kyalami three years (2028) to complete the upgrades for a South Africa GP return. Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami and South Africa. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 and the South Africa GP,' Venter concluded – with GMM ARE YOU EXCITED TO SEE THE SOUTH AFRICA GP RETURN?
