Food world mourns death of Anne Burrell

June 18 (UPI) -- The food world is paying tribute to late chef and Food Network star Anne Burrell.
Top Chef alum Carla Hall, former Chopped and MasterChef judge Aaron Sanchez, Food Network television personality Aarti Sequeira, and Cake Boss' Buddy Valastro were among those who took to Instagram to memorialize Burrell, who died Tuesday at age 55.
"I absolutely loved working with Anne on Worst Cooks in America," Hall wrote.
"She was a fierce chief and instructor -- rocking her custom skirts, mismatched socks and that unforgettable big smile," she continued. "Anne, you brought so much heart and heat to every kitchen. You will be missed."
Sequeira also wrote about Burrell's mentorship in her tribute.
"Anne was a tough but invested teacher, who thought enough of you to tell you the truth without watering it down. I always appreciated that she cared enough about a newbie to the game to give it to her straight. Ever since, she always greeted me with warmth, joy and that trademark big laugh. My heart would beat faster because I was a huge fan of her cooking show, the way she really thought of ways to teach cooking techniques," she said.
Sanchez said he is "heartbroken" over Burrell's death.
"Her spirit, her fire, her talent, her leadership, her laugh... unforgettable," he wrote. "So much respect and love for this amazing woman."
Valastro wrote that Burrell's "passion, energy and love for food lit up every kitchen."
"You were a true force and a beautiful soul," he added. "Rest in peace, Chef. We'll miss you dearly."
"Devastated," Sunny Anderson captioned a photograph of herself with Burrell.
Gigi Hadid, who briefly worked with Burrell said that she, too, is "heartbroken."
"As a longtime fan, getting to share this day with her was a dream come true," she wrote in her Instagram stories with a photograph. "Beat Bobby. Hang. Eat. I wish we could have done it again. She was awesome. Rest in peace legend."

Where to Eat, Drink and Chill in Kauai's Tastiest Beach Town
Before traveling to Hawaii for the first time, I spent hours browsing through Instagram and TikTok foodie posts. Gathering ideas for all the delicious meals I'd eat, I had high expectations for the food in Poipu Beach, located on the south shore of Kauai. As it turns out, this island's food scene impressed me even more than expected. From nicer, more sophisticated spots like Red Salt Restaurant to quick bar bites at Kalapaki Joe's, check out these best Kauai food and drink spots on your next visit. These must-visit restaurants in Kauai won't let you down. I love Indian food and will make a point to grab it during any trip. This tucked-away restaurant, "That Indian Place", has excellent food and will adjust to your spice preferences. I ordered the butter chicken (mild) and the chicken sagwala (mild), along with some garlic naan bread. The local atmosphere and outdoor dining patio really made this place stand out as one of my favorite spots to eat throughout the whole trip. Top menu items Mango LassiButter ChickenChicken Tikka MasalaChicken SagwalaPaneer Tikka Stop by Brennecke's Beach Broiler as you stroll along Poipu Beach for a lively, vibrant atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike know this top spot as one of the best places for food and drink on Kauai. While crowded, you can grab some phenomenal bites here as well as tropical-style frozen cocktails. I loved the desserts here too. If you plan on doing some appetizer or bar hopping along the main strip, definitely make this restaurant/bar a must-visit spot. It sounds interesting, but trust me once you try it, you'll want to order it time and time again. The ocean views from this restaurant also set the scene for a nice meal. Anne Burrell's death ‘under investigation by police as possible drugs overdose'
Anne Burrell's death is said to be under investigation by police as a possible drugs overdose. The Food Network TV chef, 55, was found unconscious and unresponsive in her Brooklyn apartment surrounded by approximately 100 pills, according to the New York Times, with her body discovered in the bathroom of the home she shared with her husband, Stuart Claxton, in the early hours of Tuesday (17.06.25) morning. According to NYPD documents seen by The New York Times, Anne was found 'in the shower unconscious and unresponsive surrounded by approximately (100) assorted pills'. And on Saturday (21.06.25), Page Six said police are now probing her death as a potential drugs overdose. The outlet reported: 'Anne Burrell's death is being investigated by the New York City Police Department as a possible drug overdose, Page Six can confirm.' Emergency responders pronounced the chef dead at the scene. A spokeswoman for the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed an autopsy has been completed, but that the cause and manner of death are still pending further toxicology tests. Stuart, 54, reportedly told police that he had last seen Anne alive around 1am before finding her unresponsive six to seven hours later. An emergency crews attempted CPR but were unable to resuscitate her. Anne had performed at an improvisational comedy show just hours before her death and had recently begun taking acting classes. In a podcast interview earlier this year with actor Tori Spelling, 52, she said: 'I just started taking acting classes. I started yesterday, actually… it's like an improv for actors' class. I got there and it's like eight people in the class. I'm the oldest one. Every other person has like, 'Oh, I have a master's in fine arts in theater.'' She added: 'I'm like, 'okay, I've never taken an acting class. I don't know, this is new to me.' I wonder if these delightful and super talented kids look at me and they're like, 'What's this old lady doing here?'' Anne had stepped away from her role on Worst Cooks in America after season 28, which left many fans puzzled. When asked about the decision by Spelling, she said: 'I can cook, yes, I can do TV, but also, what else? I've got more to do in my life, I feel like.' Anne married Stuart in October 2021 in her hometown of Cazenovia, New York. In an interview with the Daily Mail in April, she described married life as 'so easy' and said: 'October will be four years. It seems like it's been four minutes. I don't know if it's a honeymoon [phase], but I feel like it's settled into married life days which I really enjoy.' She also joked about joining Meghan Markle's Netflix series: 'Sure, of course. I'd go to the opening of an envelope. Why not cook with Meghan?' Anne was best known as host of Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and co-host of Worst Cooks in America, which ran for 28 seasons. She also appeared on Chef Wanted, Chopped, Food Network Star, and most recently, House of Knives, which premiered in March. Born in Cazenovia in 1969, Anne studied English and communications at Canisius College before graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 1996. She went on to work at acclaimed New York restaurants including Felidia and Savoy. She published two cookbooks – Cook Like a Rock Star and Own Your Kitchen – and was admired for her bold culinary style and distinctive platinum hair. Along with her husband, Anne is survived by her mother Marlene, sister Jane, brother Ben, and stepchildren Isabella, Amelia and Nicolas.
