SEOUL, June 19 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- Twenty South Korean nationals and their family members have evacuated Iran via a land route and arrived safely in Turkmenistan amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, 18 South Koreans and two Iranian family members crossed the border into the Central Asian country on Tuesday morning (local time) via transportation provided by the South Korean government.
They arrived in the capital, Ashgabat, the next day, the ministry said.

The eastern border land route chosen by the government is about 1,200 kilometres, and it takes around 16 hours to travel by bus without breaks, a ministry official said.
A rapid response team from Seoul was in Turkmenistan to assist with the evacuation efforts.
About 110 South Koreans had been estimated to be in Iran as of last Friday, when the Israelis initiated an attack on Iranian nuclear and military facilities.
The official also indicated that preparations are underway for an additional evacuation.
The government has been weighing options to ensure the safety of South Korean nationals in the Middle East, amid the escalating tensions following massive airstrikes between Israel and Iran.
"Given the continued exchange of military strikes between the two sides this week, growing concerns over the safety of our citizens, and the ongoing closure of Iranian airspace, we have decided to assist our nationals in evacuating Iran via land routes," the ministry said.

China's influence is growing in Central Asia. What does that mean for Russia?
At a high-level summit this week, China and its Central Asian partners voiced their shared security concerns and showed a united front amid a turbulent global landscape. The close ties between Beijing and the five Central Asian countries – whose leaders met at the China-Central Asia Summit in Kazakhstan on Tuesday – have sparked questions about whether Russia's regional dominance is waning as it remains preoccupied with the Ukraine war.

Cambodian DPM urges investors to maximise benefits from Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, bilateral free trade agreements
PHNOM PENH: (Bernama-Xinhua) Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth (pic) on Friday (June 20) urged investors to reap maximum benefits from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), Xinhua reported. Cambodia is a member of the RCEP agreement, which engages with 15 Asia-Pacific countries, and the kingdom also has bilateral FTAs with China, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Under these free trade pacts, Cambodian products have been exported to those countries with preferential tariffs. "I would like to urge investors to maximise the opportunities and benefits from the RCEP agreement and Cambodia's bilateral FTAs with China, South Korea, and the UAE," Vissoth said in a speech to hundreds of investors and business executives at a Cambodia-international investment promotion platform in Phnom Penh. He said these free trade pacts have played a crucial role in "diversifying markets for garment products to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), East Asia, and other regions besides the United States and Europe." Entering into force in 2022, RCEP comprises 10 Asean member states of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and their five trading partners, namely China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Zheng Xianjiang, co-president of the Cambodia Confederation of Investors Association, said Cambodia is a "golden hub" for investment as the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, and the international deep-sea port of Sihanoukville have provided convenience for trade exchanges between Cambodia and the rest of the world. Moreover, under the RCEP and the FTAs, trade between Cambodia and these countries has been conducted with no barriers, he said at the event. Zheng added that these trade pacts have created favourable trade and investment opportunities for investors in Cambodia. Cambodian Ministry of Commerce's Secretary of State and spokesperson Penn Sovicheat said the RCEP agreement and bilateral FTAs will help Cambodia realise its ambitious goals of becoming an upper-middle income country by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050. "These free trade pacts have not only given a big boost to Cambodia's sustainable trade growth in the long run, but also become a magnet to attract more foreign direct investments to the kingdom," he told Xinhua. Kin Phea, director general of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia, a think tank under the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said the RCEP has emerged as a key advocate for free trade and multilateralism in the wake of escalating protectionist policies, particularly from the United States. "The RCEP has become a stabilising force, fostering economic integration across the Asia-Pacific," he told Xinhua. At the forum, 21 memoranda of understanding were signed between representatives of Cambodian and foreign enterprises, covering a wide range of business areas. - Bernama-Xinhua

Defence Ministry monitors deepening Iran-Israel conflict
KOTA TINGGI: The Defence Ministry is closely monitoring the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said efforts to evacuate Malaysians from Iran were managed entirely by the Foreign Ministry. "Due to the current airspace restrictions, our citizens will be moved overland to Turkmenistan before boarding commercial flights home," he told a press conference after officiating at the Bentong ginger harvesting event at Kampung Gembut, in Tanjung Sedili here today. Khaled said the number of Malaysian evacuees was small and the process. He warned that the conflict could escalate into a full-blown global war. "If it drags on, it will impact global stability by raising oil prices, disrupting food supplies and stalling international trade. "As a trading nation, Malaysia will not be spared, and ultimately, the people will feel the pressure," he said. Khaled said the situation in the Middle East served as a reminder for Malaysia to continue strengthening its defence capabilities, especially through the adoption of modern military technologies. The Iran-Israel conflict intensified on June 13 after unprovoked airstrikes by Israel on the Iranian territory. In retaliation, Iran launched ballistic missiles targeting several locations within Israel.
