Lady Gaga Praises Queer Music Pioneer Carl Bean in Docu Clip: ‘Anthems Unify People'
Lady Gaga honors queer music icon Carl Bean and the legacy of his 1977 anthem, 'I Was Born This Way' in an exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary I Was Born This Way.
In the film, Gaga, Questlove, and Billy Porter are among those who reflect on the song's powerful impact on the LGBTQ community. 'This song is actually the music equivalent of the Giving Tree,' says Questlove, spinning the track on vinyl.

The clip opens with the chart success the song, released on Motown, had in the United States, climbing to Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and how it became an 'immediate anthem for the gay community,' embraced by house DJs worldwide.
Gaga — who titled her sophomore album after her own Bean-influenced LGBTQ-celebrating anthem, 'Born This Way' — reflects on Bean's legacy. 'This was so much more than just a hit song. When that song stopped charting, they didn't stop playing that song in clubs,' she says. 'And the movement didn't stop.'
In the clip, Questlove adds that the track was 'beyond a hit' and one that inspired hope and'revolution.' 'It's an anthem,' he says. 'And anthems never die.'
'Anthems unify people. And they help us to celebrate,' adds Gaga. 'It's people coming together to say, 'This is what we believe in. This is what we care about. We are louder. We are stronger. And we can do it together.''
Bean would eventually leave the music industry, founding the Minority AIDS Project to help underserved populations at the height of the AIDS epidemic and eventually, the first LGBTQ+ ministry called the Unity Fellowship Church.
I Was Born This Way has been six years in the making and features Questlove, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Billy Porter as exec producers. Daniel Junge and Sam Pollard direct the film which will premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 5.
'This sequence in the film shows the enduring legacy of Bean's song, and the film demonstrates his lasting influence in so many other surprising ways,' Junge tells Rolling Stone. 'There are so many celebrity bio-docs these days, which I don't disparage — Sam and I have made them — but I think the real joy of documentary is when you are surprised by things you never realized are an important part of our world… hopefully that's what this film does.'
'Not only was his rendition of the song revelatory, but what he did over the decades with his activism for the LGBTQ+ community was both groundbreaking and heartfelt,' Pollard adds.
Gaga has long credited Bean — who died in 2021 at age 77 but gave interviews for the film prior to his death — for inspiring Born This Way. Ahead of Pride Month in 2021, she wrote on Twitter: 'Born This Way, my song and album, were inspired by Carl Bean, a gay black religious activist who preached, sung and wrote about being 'Born This Way.' … Thank you for decades of relentless love, bravery, and a reason to sing. So we can all feel joy, because we deserve joy.'

Outloud music festival in Boston celebrates LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month
The Outloud music festival is coming to Boston this weekend, featuring high-energy performances from pop artists like Kim Petras and "RuPaul's Drag Race" star Trixie Mattel to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The festival has taken off in West Hollywood, but Boston represents its East Coast debut, just in time to wrap up Pride Month in the city. Performers will take the stage in East Boston at Suffolk Downs on Saturday. The former horse racing track reopened as a music venue a few years ago. "Coming together and facing challenges" Jeff Consoletti is Outloud's founder and he grew up in Milford. He tells WBZ-TV that this is "an exciting project to come home with." "LA has been a great home for me, but you know I love my Boston and New England roots," he said. "I really also recall my first live concerts, whether it was like attending events at the old Foxboro or Great Woods. The young producer in me really like connected to just regionally how the area comes together to celebrate music." Consoletti said Massachusetts felt like a "great East Coast home" for Outloud because of the state's longtime commitment to LGBTQ+ people. Boston recently declared itself a "sanctuary city" for transgender people and the broader LGBTQ+ community. "We as a community can't take a step back. We have to show a commitment to one another, to solidarity, to coming together and facing challenges," Consoletti said. "That's really what Outloud stands for. It is important to create spaces where community can thrive." Other artists in Saturday's lineup include Flo Milli, Rebecca Black, G Flip, Frankie Grande, Oompa, Big Body Kweeng, Hannah Rad and Math3ca. Tickets can still be bought online, starting at $69.

Aesop Queer Library Returns To New York City For Pride
Aesop Queer Library will return to New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto this June Aesop A beloved way to acquire LGBTQ+ books, for free, is returning for its fifth year. Aesop Queer Library will return this Pride season with pop-ups in New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto from Thursday, June 26 through Sunday, June 29. And in a year when corporate pride initiatives are notably stifled, this Australia-based fragrance brand is continuing it's June traditions. Each year at selected boutiques, Aesop removes their products from the stores and uses the shelving space to offer books by and about queer people, all on the house. Select stores will also offer reading nooks, and guests can each leave with a free title. In 2025, the Aesop Queer Library theme will be 'In Other Words -language as liberation', with titles including bestsellers curated in partnership with Penguin Random House and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an organization instrumental in defending freedom of speech and expression. Featured authors at the library include Ocean Vuong, Tourmaline, and Miranda July. For those who can't make it to the pop-up, a full reading list from a diverse range of queer authors can be found on Aesop's website. 'In a moment when many queer voices face silencing, the act of sharing LGBTQIA2S+ literature becomes all the more essential,' shared a spokesperson for Aesop. 'These stories transcend reductive narratives, illuminating the richness, resilience, and nuance of queer experience… Our 2025 theme, In Other Words—Language as Liberation, underscores the role of words as both refuge and resistance—revealing how language not only describes the world but dares to remake it. These books are bridges: between generations, identities, and imaginations."
