Thomas Partey speaks out on Arsenal future after being put on free transfer list

Daily Mirror11-06-2025

Thomas Partey sees his Arsenal contract expire this summer and was surprisingly named on the list of players granted a free transfer by the Gunners ahead of the summer window
Thomas Partey insists he is not in control of his future after being surprisingly 'released' by Arsenal. The former Atletico Madrid midfielder's contract expires this summer.
Arsenal have already announced that he is among the players currently granted a free transfer by the club. But they remain in dialogue over potentially extending his stay on North London.

Partey has now spoken and suggested that he is prioritising his own happiness as he attempts to come to a decision over his future, albeit his agent is taking control.

Speaking to 3Sports, the Ghanaian said: 'I think the first thing is where are you happy and where do you feel at home. At the end of the day you've been in football, you've been in different teams.
'Then it's about what is your next objective what do you want to achieve next. You still have to look at all this and at the end of the day we all have a family that needs money, this is our mind.
'We are not getting younger. There are a lot of things where you have to look now with a family, where you want them to be happy. When you are young you just play anywhere.
'I'm an Arsenal fan, I can't decide anything and just have to leave it to my agent and the club. Me, I just want to enjoy football.'
Mikel Arteta has already shared his thoughts on Partey, and claimed last month that he still had a crucial role to play. He said: "Yeah. In regards to Thomas, consistency-wise, it's been his best season.
'I think the way he's played, performed, his availability has been exceptional, and he's a really important player for us.'

Arsenal signed Partey for £45m from Atletico Madrid back in 2020 and the now 31-year-old has gone on to make 167 appearances for the North London club in all competitions and has scored nine goals.

Arsenal have already made tweaks to their midfield ahead of next season. Ex-Chelsea star Jorginho has departed the club and sealed a move to Brazilian side Flamengo. The Gunners are expected to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi as a replacement despite late interest from Real Madrid.
Arteta's side are anticipated to pay more than the £51m release clause written into his deal in Spain. And once that move is completed, he will be reunited with former teammate Mikel Merino, who also made a switch to the Emirates Stadium last summer.

There are lofty Euros aims for Wales and manager Wilkinson

At 1,085 metres above sea level, climbing Yr Wyddfa is not for the faint-hearted. But Wilkinson trekked to the top in under 90 minutes – 'I was listening to political podcasts that were getting me angry so I stormed up,' she said – and hopes the breath-taking vistas overlooking the Eryri National Park will be matched by on-pitch sights in Switzerland. Wales may be entering their first major tournament next month as the competition's lowest-ranked team in 31st spot, but Wilkinson – the 181-times capped Canada international with Welsh ancestry – insists her players are ready to conquer 'their Everest'. 'We've used the mountain as a theme and an image throughout this campaign,' said Wilkinson, whose ties to Yr Wyddfa run deep as her parents honeymooned in the area and her family held a ceremony on the mountain in memory of her late father. 'It (qualifying) was always going to be an uphill battle with little setbacks. As we've moved towards the Euros we've talked about the summit, the Everest part of it. That something is impossible until it isn't. 'Outside Wales people can think whatever they want. Our goal is to show up and deliver to the best of our ability. I am sure people will be looking up Wales on a map very soon.' Wilkinson's squad is a mixture of young and old, with seven players having fewer than 20 caps. There also four centurions present, with star forward Jess Fishlock – 'the face of Wales', according to Wilkinson – skipper Angharad James, Sophie Ingle and Hayley Ladd. Ingle's inclusion was the main talking point as the 141-times capped former captain has not played since suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in September. The 33-year-old midfielder has completed her recovery work at Chelsea, although she left the Women's Super League champions last month after seven years and is among five unattached players in the squad. Wales open their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on July 5 before playing France and England. Three unnamed players will be part of the training camp in Switzerland, with the squad first preparing for the Euros with a week-long stay in Portugal. 'It's felt a bit heavy,' Wilkinson said about squad selection. 'You know when you've those big decisions looming you're going to hurt someone. 'It's the worst part of a dream job. For these people it's their dream and can push them onto great things.'

Filipe Luis makes huge Nicolas Jackson prediction after Chelsea red card

Filipe Luis insists Nicolas Jackson can become one of the best strikers in the world after his red card in Chelsea's 3-1 defeat to Flamengo at the Club World Cup on Friday. Enzo Maresca's side took an early lead through Pedro Neto but collapsed in the second half as Jackson was sent off, while Flamengo scored three without reply. Jackson came on as a substitute for Liam Delap in the second half but just four minutes later he was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Ayrton Lucas. The Senegal international has faced criticised for his lack of consistency in front of goal during his time at Chelsea but Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis, who spent one season at Stamford Bridge as a player, is adamant that the striker will improve. When asked about Jackson's red card, Filipe Luis said: 'First of all, I love Chelsea. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. 'I spent one really happy season there, we won the Premier League and the League Cup and I made special friends and played with the best players in the world for a season, and I was really happy there. 'So I know how the club is special and how the club needs to win titles because of the pressure inside the club, it happens. 'But he [Jackson] is so good, he's young, he has all the potential and quality the club needs. 'I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. 'Another red card and honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. 'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. 'No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.' 'For sure, he will surpass this little mistake. I think it was clear, I just saw it in front of me, I haven't seen it on the TV yet, but for me it was a red. 'But it is just a small detail for a player who is a big player, he can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.' Filipe Luis also claimed that Chelsea have been the best tactical team in Europe since Maresca took over from Mauricio Pochettino last year. More Trending 'I told Maresca, [I had] four days without sleeping, or sleeping really bad, because when I watch his team playing it's, for me, the most perfect tactical playing in Europe,' the former Chelsea defender said. 'He has all his solutions covered for the players and the players understood really well his model of play. 'It's so difficult to play against him, so that makes our win huge, so I'm really happy.' Larne ace says there's one thing that all Irish League clubs must do to narrow gap to southern sides

Former Arsenal midfielder Mark Randall believes the Irish League still has some way to go to catch up with the League of Ireland, however he feels Larne's European heroics are encouraging clubs to dream bigger. The Invermen became the first Irish League side to reach the group stage of a major European competition when they progressed to the League Phase of the Uefa Conference League in 2024.
