Hillsborough County seeking input on spending $709M in hurricane recovery funds

TAMPA, Fla. - Hillsborough County officials are asking for input from residents on how more than $700 million in federal aid should be spent after a string of recent hurricanes.
By the numbers
The county says it expects to receive $709,324,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
That money will be used for recovery and mitigation efforts following Hurricanes Idalia, Debby, Helene and Milton, all of which impacted the area within the past two years.
The county's draft plan shows that at least 70% of the funds will be designated for low-to-moderate income households.
More than half the total funding is earmarked for housing programs, including:
Home repair and replacement
New construction
Infrastructure upgrades (i.e., stormwater system and drainage improvement)

The county is hosting a series of public comment hearings and education meetings this month to gather input, all of which are scheduled from 6-8 p.m.

June 13: Lennard High School, 2342 E. Shell Point Rd., Ruskin

June 9: Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library, 3910 S. Manhattan Ave., Tampa
June 17: Roy Haynes Park Recreation Center, 1902 S. Village Ave., Tampa
June 23: Victor Crist Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St., Tampa

Milton H. Boyles 1929-2025 St. Joseph, Mo.

Milton Harold Boyles, 95 of St. Joseph, passed away on June 12, 2025, at Mosaic Life Care, in St. Joseph. Milton Harold Boyles, the son of Roger and Estel (Hardin) Boyles, was born on Dec. 13, 1929, in Rosendale, Missouri. He graduated from Bolckow High School. Milton was united in marriage to Verna Mae Sipes on Feb. 2, 1954, she preceded him in death. In 2004 he married Mary (Sallee), and enjoyed the remainder of his life in this loving marriage; Mary survives of the home. Milton served his country in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. Upon his return to the United States, Milton was employed by the Missouri Department of Transportation where he worked until retirement, after 39 1/2 years. He remained very active throughout his life, and enjoyed gardening, helping others, and cutting wood. His memory will live on in the lives of his surviving family, including his wife, Mary, and nieces and nephews. Milton was preceded in death by both parents; sister, Sylvia Manship; brothers, Jerry and Jim Boyles; and first wife, Verna. Milton has been cremated under the care of Heaton-Bowman-Smith-Sidenfaden Chapel of St. Joseph, Missouri. At Milton's request, there will be no formal service. Memorials may be directed to Mosaic Hospice of St. Joseph, Missouri. The family extends their gratitude to the Mosaic Hospice team for the care that Milton received. Spartanburg Co. shares new Helene recovery data

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Spartanburg County Emergency Management is asking residents what the community needs to recover from Hurricane Helene. Emergency Management shared in a media release that newly updated Helene data revealed many members of the community still have a lot of unmet needs. Data from the agency revealed that, as of June 2025, more than 500 properties in Spartanburg County have still not recovered from Helene. These unmet needs can range from tree damage to shorted HVAC systems, but data further shows that a majority of community needs focus on debris assistance and home damage. A majority of people seeking aid are also over the age of 65. 'At this time, there are more unmet needs than resources,' said Emergency Management. To help address community needs, Emergency Management established a new Long Term Recovery Group that is dedicated to Helene Recovery. The group has officially partnered with the Spartanburg County Foundation, United Way and others. For anyone still requiring assistance from Hurricane Helene, Emergency Management asked that they provide information regarding their needs. Spartanburg residents can find the link to share their needs here. Emergency Management asks county members to donate or volunteer with a local non-profit, such as Rebuilding Together, Eight Days of Hope, Team Rubicon and more, if in a well enough position to assist their community. Helicopter crashes at Florida airport, 4 hospitalized
