Canada coach Jesse Marsch downplays latest CONCACAF disciplinary proceeding

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch reacts during the first half of a CONCACAF Nations League semifinal soccer match against Mexico, Thursday, March 20, 2025, in Inglewood, Calif. (AP Photo/Etienne Laurent) HOUSTON — Canada coach Jesse Marsch is downplaying a CONCACAF investigation into his actions during the Canadian men's opening game at the Gold Cup. Marsch told a news conference in Houston, in advance of Canada's game against Curaçao on Saturday, that the issue was of more interest to the media than the team. Noting that the disciplinary process was ongoing, he asked that questions focus on football. Saturday's contest marks the end of Marsch's two-game ban arising from a red card during the CONCACAF Nations league third-place game in March. But the coach remains in the spotlight, facing more disciplinary action initiated by CONCACAF after Canada's 6-0 win over Honduras on Tuesday in Vancouver. CONCACAF said its Disciplinary Committee is reviewing whether Canada and Marsch did not follow regulations involving suspended officials and whether offensive language was used toward CONCACAF match officials. The CONCACAF investigation reportedly focuses on where Marsch watched the game and language used when he was asked to move. TV showed Marsch in a B.C. Place Stadium suite, taking notes and watching, with a laptop in front of him, alongside other Canadian team officials. Assistant coach Mauro Biello ran the sideline in his absence. --- This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 20, 2025 The Canadian Press

Hockey stick owned by Toronto Maple Leafs legend Bill Barilko hits auction block

A piece of hockey history is on the auction block — a signed stick owned by Bill Barilko, the Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman who scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime in 1951. The National Hockey League's website shows Barilko, born in Timmins, Ont., played 252 games in his career. He spent all of his five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. For many, Barilko's goal against the Montreal Canadiens on April 21, 1951 is one of hockey's most celebrated. It was also Barilko's last, as in August of the same year, he died when a plane he was in went down while on a fishing trip to James Bay. The Leafs didn't win another Cup until 1962. Six weeks after that win, the crash site and Barilko's body were located. His story inspired The Tragically Hip song Fifty-Mission Cap. The game-issued stick from the 1950-51 season is being auctioned off by Miller and Miller Auctions based out of New Hamburg, Ont. Benjamin Pernfuss is the consignment director in the sports category at Miller and Miller and called it a "unique find." "It's one of those items that gives you a rush when you hold it in your hand, just knowing that you're touching a piece of history," Pernfuss told CBC Kitchener-Waterloo's The Morning Edition. "Every day, I'm in different people's collections and seeing items and it's not every day that I see something I haven't seen before. But this is one of those items and it really brought me a lot of joy to source it and and offer for sale." Listen to the radio call from 1951 when Bill Barilko won the Leafs the Cup 7 years ago Duration 0:35 After mysteriously vanishing, the Toronto Maple Leafs wouldn't win another Stanley Cup until Barilko's remains were found 11 years later. The stick is stamped number five, which indicates it was issued to Barilko because that was his number for the 1950-51 season. The stick is taped for game use in a way that matches Barilko's style and there are puck marks and lower hand grip wear, which could indicate the stick was likely used in a game, although Miller and Miller Auctions is unable to confirm that. The stick was made by Love & Bennett, a hockey stick supplier for the team, and the company's name is stamped on the stick. Pernfuss says the stick includes Barilko's signature and several other identifiable signatures including: Turk Broda, Ted Kennedy, Joe Klukay, Cal Gardner, Fleming Mackell, Ray Timgren, Howie Meeker, Harry Watson, Bill Juzda, Sid Smith, Max Bentley, Al Rollins and Tod Sloan. Miller and Miller Auctions notes the signatures of Rollins and Sloan also help date the stick to the 1950-51 season. Miller and Miller Actions had put an estimate for the stick at between $3,000 and $5,000, but Pernfuss says because it's so rare, "the sky is the limit." "There's not a lot of his memorabilia out there and the stick was owned by Barilko and signed by him as well. So it's a significant piece and a rare item in hockey history," Pernfuss says. The online auction closes Sunday evening.

‘A super cool opportunity': Two Sask. products to don the Maple Leaf at U15 Softball World Cup

Regina's Keznie Newman will represent Canada at the U15 Softball World Cup in Italy. Two Saskatchewan softball players will represent Canada at the 2025 WBSC U15 Women's Softball World Cup in Italy. Kenzie Newman is a pitcher and plays first base. 'It's just a super cool opportunity,' she told CTV News. 'Not everyone gets to [play for Canada].' Newman is a third-generation softball player. Both her mother – Carrie – and grandfather played the sport, so she says she fell in love with softball at an early age. 'It's just a family thing,' Newman said. But she is the first member of her family to represent Canada on the world stage. The World Cup is the second time Newman will have the Maple Leaf across her chest. She pitched for Canada at the Pan-Am Games earlier this year to qualify her nation for the U15 World Cup for the first time. '[Saskatchewan] is just a small part of Canada that we get to represent,' Kenzie said. 'It is really important and I'm super grateful.' Dimen, a catcher, got the call from Softball Canada to join the team for the World Cup after not appearing at the Pan-Am Games. Kenzie's mother, Carrie, doubles as her club team coach. Carrie played in a National Championships but never for Team Canada. She adds opportunities for girls in the sport continue to grow, particularly at the US college level. 'College softball is huge [and] it's more prominent,' she said. 'All the girls on my team are watching [the College World Series]. They follow it, they watch it on YouTube.' 'Every single one of them aspires to be one of those individuals playing on the field in college,' Carrie added. Softball made its official Olympic debut at Atlanta in 1996 and was featured in the next three Games before it was removed from the program. The sport then made its return in Tokyo at the 2020 games and will once again be featured at the 2028 Olympics. Kenzie hopes there may be more opportunities to play for Canada down the road. 'I just have to keep working and we'll see where we get,' she said. The 2025 WBSC U15 Women's Softball World Cup begins June 27 in Lombardy, Italy. Canada opens the tournament against Czechia.
